  1. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

That's good to hear. I was really hoping others would get as much mileage as me.
  2. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

Love this forum. Thanks CoriBoom. More later.
  3. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

But what's the difference between putting "-d:DirectX" or "-d:Software" in the Launch Options and choosing either Hardware or Software Renderer in the Graphics Options ingame?
  4. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

What's the difference between using -d:DirectX or -d:Software in the Launch Options and just changing the settings from Hardware to Software (vice versa) ingame? None? And I did check my config log file. I just says Intell(R) HD Graphics. In fact D/Ling and installing the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant STILL gave me the same info. But it did have this: cardVersion = Vendor: 8086, Device: 0f31, Board: 9331025, Chipset: 000e anyone know what that means?
  5. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

More great info! I had it set to -r1920x1080x32 as I use my television for a monitor usually. But I occasionally switch to the netbook's screen which is... something else and I always have to change it. I saw the -rWidexHeightx32 on a Steam thread this morning and thought that may default to the screen being used (I think GOG uses -rWWWWxHHHx32). I haven't tested that on the netbook screen but it looks the same on the TV. Regarding the x32. Obviously I'm colorblind and I doubt I'd notice a change from 32 to 16. How much does this help performance if at all? (Didn't read your link but will. I'm getting in a hurry - have stuff to do this evening and have been doing SC4 all day instead of stuff I should have been. But I will read it.)
  6. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

Afterthought: I've been increasing SC4's priority to high (not sure what they mean by "realtime" because I'm stupid) in the Task Manager. I saw someone do this in a video, haljackey maybe? Any thoughts on how this effects performance? I haven't played enough and have been experimenting with other things to tell. Also I did add -d:DirectX to my Launch Options a while ago and I noticed 2 things: The game loaded fast as hell. Then, no bueno. City detail loaded very, very slowly. So I may have my answer there.
  7. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

OK, Cyclone Boom. I'm already on top of about 1/2 of that. I'm too dumb to know what model the Intel Graphics is, the System Info just says "Intell(R) HD Graphics". My current Steam Launch Options are: -CPUCount:1 -CustomResolution:enabled -f -rWidexHighx32 -intro:off (I don't remember what the "-f" is for) I've started to experiment with Hardware/Software rendering. Either seems to work. Which is faster I have yet to determine. Shadows was the first thing to go along with clouds, waves, all that. All I run med/high is draw speed, texture quality and city detail.. because I like it. I could learn to do without probably but we'll see. Today's reading (ALL day, SC4 keeps doing that to me) kinda let me know that the game is just going to run slowly on this modern yet bare bones system. It seems some are choosing their onboard graphics over their graphics cards in some cases. That's OK, I've always been about 10 years behind currently acceptable systems so I'm used to games running slow and most options set to low. But of course I want to alleviate that as much as possible particularly as I add more content. Yeah, I read the DAMN thread last night. It was rather dramatic as I was at first convinced I wouldn't be able to use DAMN, which I need BADLY, and it turned and turned, people almost gave up and TADA! It's likely my next D/L. Thanks for the DataPacking info, man! I've been reading a lot but it often confuses me more or sends me on a long goose chase because I don't understand half the terminology and whatnot. It's a good explanation that gives me the notion that I maybe shouldn't worry with that for now having only 1G of content and I'm still experimenting with a LOT. I'm getting my head around plugins order, kinda. I'm still not sure what should load before what or why. One day I'll actually play SC4, huh? Hmm there's the signature line I've been thinking for. Thanks, CB!

So can we talk about system requirements and plugins management for a sec? I've pretty much stopped D/Ling custom content at this point, not because I don't want it but because I'm not sure I can manage it in game or out. There's so much I don't understand yet and I don't want a gunked up plugins folder. I've understood about half of the 0.99G I've installed. I run a pretty lowbrow system. Hell, it's basically a netbook: Celron Dual 2.16GHz (which I think I have Steam running a single core), 4G RAM, Intell onboard HD Graphics, WIN 10. A Peanut Box by today's standards but heaps better than what I was running in '03. Last Summer I filled a large tile and my netbook had a hard time swallowing it. But I seem to remember having the same problem in '03. Lately I've been playing regions with small and medium tiles to maybe help a little bit despite the constraints of smaller tiles. All good but as I've D/L'd more content I'm noticing the difference; long load times, lag, slower building draw speeds, etc... I started playing SC4 again because I thought my system could handle it. Am I wrong? As I D/L more content what can I expect? Or utilize? I've begun looking at Datpacking and load order and stuff. I don't pretend to understand it yet but I'm getting confident enough and having enough trouble to really start looking into it. Can I expect significant results or am I truly crippled by my hardware? My ingame folders are becoming quite unmanageable as well. I can't find half of what's there and don't understand the other. Started looking at DAMN and apparently there have been some problems with STEAM. I think that one got sorted by vast group effort, but... Is anyone else using Steam and what other compatibility issues have you run into with custom content? I'm afraid the Datpacking and such is another of those situations where you guys are going to have to talk to me like I'm an idiot. I've read what threads and tutorials I could find and they they blew my mind.

You guys did all the work. It sure is awesome - really made inaccessible aspects of the game accessible. Thanks. 4REAL Now if you guys can just code some Matrix level NAM mastery programs I'll be good. Today I almost had a full scale meltdown over a stupid bridge. Then my RHW 4-way interchange became an exercise in starting over and over and over. Getting there though!
  10. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

My, my you've been a busy little bee. I had a chance to look at the latest zoning tools and WOWSERS! That really did the trick. Although I haven't been able to test all of these, they work in the traffic vol/cong so they should be fine. Good move on the Traffic Vol Bar Graph. I cheat. I'm never broke. No need to keep track of never being broke. I'll give these a final run through the next few days. But everything seems to be on track. Good work, Cori.

A lot of this is really coming down to pros and cons. Here's my thing with the red, I can see primary colors and we all develop psychological associations to color regardless of how we perceive them. Red means danger and it really stands out in that color scheme for me making it easiest to ID the highest congestion in the city. I thought it would be easier. Yet when I look at your images above I'm reminded of a big problem I have which is the map. The red really disappears on the green background. The Yellow works much better. In fact I may have been wrong about the red altogether. If it doesn't work well in the top slot, it doesn't make much sense to put a color in the middle somewhere that I can't really see in the map. Let me play around with these but I fear the first option may have been best. Color is so confusing for me. Thanks for being patient. The Zoning underlays look really, really good here but I just can't turn on SC4 today. Maybe tonight but not tomorrow. So maybe Wednesday LOL.
  12. "Where's my water?" and other stupid questions

Ok, here's the final rundown. Sorry it took so long. IRL stuff and all. Air Pollution DataView: This is great. I can see all various degrees in polution where I could not before. This one is ready to go. Traffic Congestion and Traffic Volume DataView: I played for a day with out these again they are such an improvement. But I have a suggestion. I can really see the Maxis red when I wasn't using these mods and I'm having a little trouble with the blues which is weird. So can we use the Maxis red for the max value (300% in Traffic Volume), take out the medium dark blue (100% in Traffic Volume) and move everything down to fill in the missing blue? On both? I really think the bright red is still helpful in this case and shouldn't blend with the next two below it. Seriously though, this one really helps a lot as is. But I think the red would make it perfect. Zone Manager v1.2: Yeah, that works. My color memory as I move across the map is pretty poor but these are distinct enough shades that it really, really helps. It took a little practice but I don't need to query these like I used to. This is ready to go. But I am curious about replacing the underlying textures. That could make it better. Traffic Volume as Bar Graph: Much like the Jobs & Pop was, I'm torn with this one. The time data is just so useful. And I can't think of anything to replace to have both line and bar. They all have their uses. It's a bit of a hassle but I can isolate the data if I can't tell which is which. The bar graph is easier, definitely. But it comes at a cost. You might want to include this as optional but I'm not sure I will keep it in my plugins. Job & Pops as Bar (replaces Ed by Age): Brilliant solution. Who needs Ed by Age? Also ready to go. Super Thanks again, Cori. Great work for a great cause. I hope it hasn't been too much trouble and sorry I dawdled. More stupid questions to come. Lots of them. I've been reading about load order and datapacking and ohhhh I'll have questions. I'm glad to have you guys. Thanks.
  13. Oh I don't even really understand demand or caps yet, not really. But I'm getting there. Lots of help.
  14. Hey, Cori. I'm still testing and will get back with you soon. But regarding the Jobs and Pop Graph mods like , Equinox RCI Query and the Census Repository (I'm using an older version I think, doesn't look like that) has eliminated my need to use the Jobs & Pop Graph - all the info is there, right? Now I still don't really get a lot of the data these mods provide so I may be missing something but I was thinking of abandoning the Jobs& Pop Graph for the Maxis one so I can access the trend lines. Am I missing something?
