Thought I'd share my experience as someone who recently got into CXL I recently got the new simcity and was thoroughly disappointing. It was just too easy. I could accept the game being easy if it let me be creative. It wont let me be creative either. You cant be very creative in a box thats so tiny an interchange covers a quarter of the map. I turned to mods but the custom content scene for the new simcity is still very very new and limited. Orion expands the city limits but does it in a very awkward way that makes it difficult to play, I'm just not willing to put up with it. After spending about a week with simcity i was incredibly frustrated. I was a bit tired of SC4 but the new simcity really wasn't what i hoped it would be. I had originally immediately dismissed Cities XL after the terrible trainwreck that was the release and one of the predecessors; City Life, but after browsing around steam and seeing CXL platinum on sale for 10 dollars i decided what the hell. This was a great decision. First impressions were kind of shitty. The UI is definitely not as polished as simcity, it doesnt look very nice, kind of clunky in practice. I immediately though i wasted 10 dollars. But then i started playing the game. Holy $%&^! it blows simcity out of the water. The maps are huge, area wise not sure how much bigger but it must be at least 10x bigger that simcity 2013s plots. The modding scene is well and alive, just go to xlnation. It just feels like theres much more depth and complexity to the game. Also the graphics go more for realism which i also appreciate. With some edited shaders the game can look incredible. The game defintely has some flaws. Its not a very efficient game and can tend to run badly on some systems when you approach large populations of 1mil+. I havent had the problem but many have. The UI isnt great either as i said. CXL i think is quite an excellent game when you judge it as a citybuilder. I think its certainly better than Simcity. Suprised it isnt more popular. TLDR: Game is still being played, modding is alive and well.

Discussion about Always-On Connection to Origin
Attila464 replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
This really saddens me, when i heard that FINALLY a new simcity was in the works and that it actually showed potential to rekindle the serious i was so excited. After reading all of this im having bad memories from Cities XL, this EXACT conversation happened and the game failed. I genuinely hope the Maxis comes to their senses. I'm still buying the game, this issue aside everything they've shown so far looks spot on with what id like to see in a successor to SC4. But if Maxis doesnt pull its head out of its ass and really rethink this along with support for modders cant see this game succeeding -

You can never prevent piracy people are talking about preventing piracy when all you can really do is delay it. A pirated version of crysis and spore were out even before the game, same for windows seven. Pirating is impossible to prevent. I don't feel sorry for companies that get pirated at all they will still make millions regardless of pirates. Assuming they make a good game. No games failure can be blamed on pirates there simply aren't that many pirates. In fact a way to tell how successful a game is by seeing how quickly it gets pirated, the more people like it the more attention and effort it will get to crack the game and pirate it. Bottom line damaging customer experience and relations so you can delay getting pirated for 1 week is a poor excuse in my book, it is their software they can do all they want but in the end its they who lose by damaging customer relations.

I would suggest getting region census mod so you can take pictures of your region without those planes or pesky menus.

I highly suggest you take a break from batting, thus far the rating for your lots have been 23% i think this means that you should stop releasing lots and study some more from some of the great works of BSC, Simgoober, NDEX, HK etc. I applaud your ambition but the execution really needs some work. Or if your going to continue making these instead of releasing 10-15 every week. Wait and release them all in a pack.

My native language is Turkish but he should at least so effort in his lots, releasing 10+ lots within 2 weeks does not show effort. Making spelling mistakes that could have been fixed had he gone over his description. Providing a link for dependencies shouldn't be effected by the fact that he is Tunisian.

Discuss, IMO it will be the car sim game of the century, the graphics are the best currently in the market for anything. Over 950 cars in the full game. Over 30 tracks. Full Multiplayer. And a multitude of other features. I was impressed with Prolouge if that shows what is to come, then i will be speachless.

The first screen should be a choice between single player or online play. Clicking single player loads the game, no online log in even if you are online. If you are online you should not be forced to log on to your site. quote> Actually, as this game is an MMO, and is meant to be played online, they should have just cut out the single player entirely, just like most MMO's do. Would have saved them the headache of dealing with people complaining that to play the complete MMO game (i.e. an online game) they have to subscribe for it. quote> But thats not what happened, they are advertising a singleplayer and an MMO and saying both are good, playable, full featured.

Thats subjective, whats cheap for you may be expensive for others, and many that can afford it don't feel like paying 9 dollars monthly to get features that should have been included with the game. quote> Originally posted by: SimBurger Human beings are so funny. One guy is screaming he can't play at all without connecting to the internet. Turns out he didn't activate his product. Another guy is screaming that Monte Cristo "stole his money". Turns out he didn't even give it a couple days to ship to his front door yet. Others are just saying "Lame" and "Sucks". You guys kill me. Enjoy the newest and yes - improved - game since Sim City 4. Stop being impossible to please. See mass transit, updates, region play and AI. Your negativity is going to spread everywhere and a pretty cool game is going to get a bad rap. No different than negativity ruining the honeymoon with our amazing new president. Most peoples negativity is justifyed, 2 people that were making rather unfortunate mistakes on a forum that many haven't even heard of won't give the game a "bad rep." The games rep is completly up to the game to determine. quote> I can see both ways, but people need to understand both sides, just because some people made bad comments just bashing the product with no backup because they didn't read the thread doesn't define the whole group of people that feel like they have been duped and are dissapointed. Likewise those who just say the game is good and everyone is just crying don't define the group that like the game.

Yes to all you questions, and please do read the other threads which all answer your questions before making a new one.

Originally posted by: lexx Well, you certainly have many good points but I think that you are not looking at the big picture. I believe that MC are not looking forward to take away something. Why are they doing it? Do they want to upset the community? Of course not. Its the option they choose in order to avoid something else. They are trying to find a way to maintain this project. An this means getting paid to do it. Nobody will work for free in order to deliver SC4 with better graphics. And where is Maxis now btw? We are living in much more different times where developing a game is much more complicated. They choose to create an online game. Thats why the cut out things from the single player. And thats cool. Because by that way they will have more money, more time, more resources and feedback to create something unique. And you will get updates every week. Or do you want to wait for an expansion pack one year later? And then live forever with a dead game. I like mmo concept from the development view.quote> I refuse to spend my hard earned money on vague promises for the future which should have been done in the past. If its tough to make a game then thats too bad, thats the way life works, just because something is hard to do doesn't mean thats an excuse to do bad on it. Just the fact that PO was one of the focused parts of the game was ignoring the community, ignoring their own polls, ignoring the thousands of pages of useful suggestion in their beta forums. The graphics are nothing special, its a 3d city builder thats nothing to be impressed about in 2009 3d is a requirement, nota feature. I believed in them for city life, they let us down, i believed them for city life 2008, they let us down. I believed for CXL and they have already beginned to let us down. Saying pay for PO and we'll give you something in the future is not any evidence or promise that they will do anything, never mind that, they are limiting custom content from modders, and those people can create more content then any company ever could.

Zoom in on a CXL house and many times i see textures that don't blend or mesh together properly, bad performance even on a overclocked GTX 260 with 3.2g Quad Core (mind you i know that it doesn't use all 4 cores) Just my 2 cents but 3d graphics aren't all their cracked up to be, back in 2007 these would be groundbreaking, today they're just meh. quote> Yeah the grahpics close up are less than Sc4, but the buildings in CXL are basically 90% less polys (Pieces of 3D mesh). This allows for many, many 3D buildings to be displayed without lag. quote> Thats what suprised me, in theory thats what should happen, but i was getting unexplainable amounts of lag. I had no major programs running in the background, i went as far as to check to terminate all no essential programs; still lag. It doesn't happen with sc4, it doesn't happen with any other game. But never mind that, this isn't the trouble shoot my problem thread (which i think will be coming very soon after release) Overall the 3d feel is nice, but i would have like if they had included settings that would allow those with more powerful systems to run the game to its full potential. quote> Perhaps we will find a way around it.. Fear of heights, fairly typical fear. I've tried overcoming it by always looking down of high ledges, climbing etc. But i can never overcome it.

The CitiesXL Plan - why not to dis Monte Cristo

We've got a potentially awesome new game coming. Smile. Or would you rather go back to another 7 years of nothing, post SimCity4 ? I think all of you should watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOtEQB-9tvk It gets better near the end... -SB- quote> Well, in this case i think we have a reason to be unhappy. Look at it this way, compared to any country in Africa(with South Africa barely exempt), the USA is a haven with plenty of jobs, little violence, little to no disease, plentiful food, great goverment etc. Yet we are always complaining constantly about all those things. Why? Because, even as twisted as it is we have different expectations then many in Africa. Those who constantly look at the world half-empty or half-full IMO are wrong. Rather i look at the glass twice as big as it needs to be. CXL is cutting out things that we have grown to expect since the first simcity in 1989. That IMO is a reason to be unhappy. Making you have internet connections even for singe-player which by the very defintion of the phrase should not require internet does. Those who mod simcity will have to jump through an array of roadblocks and hoops to even be able to release custom content, and even then their efforts will only be avaliable to the slim population that will buy PO. And if you stop paying for PO, you lose all your cities. I think most would agree that MC has never mentioned any of that in their video's so they can avoid issue(s) And when asked directly about these problems we get a vague half-truth. We can barely get any truth out of politicans, and having to deal with that for a game is really infuriating. This is why we are "negative, over-entitled, whiny, and always see things cup half empty" And as far as i can see we are justified. -
