Cities: Skyline; A new City Simulator Announced By Paradox

    The Sky is no limit!

Inhabit a world where you define the rules. Cities: Skylines invites you to create the city of your dreams in a sprawling landscape dominated by cloud hugging structures and jaw dropping architectural marvels.

Developed by Colossal Order, Cities: Skylines offers sprawling landscapes and maps with endless sandbox gameplay and new ways to expand your city. Key to progression is the ability to influence your city’s policy by incorporating taxation into districts. All this including the ability to mod the game to suit your play style makes this the definitive city building simulation.

You’re only limited by your imagination, so take control and reach for the sky!

    Main features:

    • City policies: Set policies to guide how the city and districts develop over the course of your playthrough.

    • City districts: Personalize city districts with names of your choice for variety and personality.

    • Road building and zoning

    • Unlock buildings and services

    • Taxation: Fine-tuning the city budget and services and setting tax rates to different residential, commercial and industrial levels and controlling what kind of areas are more likely to spawn in the zoned areas

    • Public transportation: Build transport networks throughout the city with buses and metros

    • Outside connections: Make industry and commercial districts flourish with new customers in the neighboring cities

    • Wonders: the ultimate end-game content that the players strive towards

    • Huge maps: Unlock new map tiles with unique possibilities to expand the city

    • Water flow simulation: Add new challenges to water services.

    • Polished visual style and core gameplay

    • Modding tools: Built in feature designed to encourage creative pursuits.

Thus far this game looks excellent. Here's to hoping it will follow through as the next great city builder. It's certainly off to an impressive start for an alpha.

Alpha?  Is there an alpha?  Who do they trust besides themselves?

Wait and see.  Remember how the blood got onto the bleeding edge.

My goodness you have issues. What's your problem?

Colossal Order is giving it a try, and that can only be good for us. Yes, we have been disappointed many times before, but there's no reason to be negative at this point. Maybe, eventually, we get a worthy successor of SC4. The genre is not dead and we should be at least optimistic about this.

But if you are not willing to accept other games than SC4, then please step aside and take your frustrations elsewhere.

All those wonderful advertisements are similar to the SimCity 2013 pre-release-alpha advertisements , and then we saw the  results , this will be the same. They have the "money throwers" and the "other city-build fans" in their hands waiting.

But... it's not similar at all, it's the exact opposite. Maxis never claimed the cities in SC to be huge, never said it will support modding from the beginning (which is VERY important for us), never said it's gonna be offline (not before release and long after) and advertised it as a multiplayer game from the start, unline Skylines. PI seems to know and understand all the mistakes Maxis/EA did.

After the last fiasco, let us not jump into the vat before we know it is not filled with sulphuric acid.

I think that we got your point already, thank you.

I'm quite skeptic. I still remember how we thought Cities XL was thought to be  SC4's successor. Then we thought SC2013 was the true successor to SC4.

This will most likely become a good game, but I don't think this is the game Simcity fans will be waiting for. Not much to go along with the trailer.

If the game is a success (from our point of view) then we win. If it doesn't measure up (same point of view) then we are one step closer to a true SC4 successor because the list keeps getting longer on "How NOT to make...

This is the same discussion the people over on RCT3 sites are having about Atari announcing RCT World. "It might be good, but it won't be what we want/won't be as good as RCT3/etc."

Of course it won't...not at first. The reason SC4 is so great now is because the community MADE it that way. And unfortunately, the hardcore city-simmer usually isn't the person a company markets towards; it's the casual fan who will pick it up on a whim, play it for a few months, and then stick it on the shelf. Communities like Simtropolis, regardless of how big and popular they are, are the outliers in the bell curve that is the consumer. You most likely are NOT the target audience for this project.

But that doesn't mean it can't be great. With a solid simulation, modern graphics, and an openness to modding (which this claims it will do), then they've already got a great start. I'm looking forward to the release of this, but with reservations. I've gotten swept up in the buzz and excitement of new releases a few too many times and wasted a few too many dollars. I hope this game can deliver a small fraction of what we all want it to be.

This game sounds promising, especially since they are advertising offline play and modding capabilities.  But I am among those with a wait and see attitude since we have yet to see a worthy successor to SC4.

By Paradox? Nice. Looks like the thing we wished Sc13 would be. Really promising. (-"Road building and zoning" -  lol, in a city simulator game this isn't a feature but an essential element)

Edit: The website means, there's a singleplayer but no multiplayer, but the trailer doesn't said so?

The best part, this game is not being made by EA.

The producer also said in the AMA on Reddit that the game will ship with an asset importer.

If CIM and CIM2 are any indication of how this game will turn out, than I'm more than happy to say I have faith in this being a hit.  Cannot wait to see the final product.

In the images I see a lot of repeating structures. The flexibility of the roads looks pretty solid though and the map sizes seem to be quite large to say the least. Please, let this game be up to par with our expectations, because I'm expecting a lot of good things. I'll gladly pay money for this. And the fact that Paradox is willing to put money into the city-building simulator market is great as well. Needs fresh blood.

This game looks great so far. But then again, the SimCity trailer looked great and we all know how much of a mess that game is. But I trust Paradox will create a good game since they have been doing so recently and their last good game wasn't in 2004 like Maxis.

For me, this announcement was the best news of Gamescon, hands down.  I was watching the Paradox stream and saw this and you could have knocked me over with a feather.  The release info I've heard is Q1 2013, nothing more specific yet.

I'm impressed. This does look promising.

The only fear I have is milking players through DLC's. Another Paradox game, Crusader Kings 2, in notorious for this.

I don't think you know Paradox well enough. Their games are anything but casual. Their "map painting" games have enormous learning curve and attract very specific audience. Then there's Cities in Motion which is a subganre of a subganre.

I think Paradox is making this game with avereage Simtropolis-goer in mind.

You don't have to buy them. They also release updates at the same time which are free, & can play a great game without buying any DLC's which don't make your game any less. CK2 is a typical example of this.
