Working on Midtown Manhattan

Entry 57: Working on Midtown Manhattan

Have I a weekend treat for you folks at Simtropolis! Midtown Manhattan is almost complete and there are still several city blocks which need to be complete, but by and large it is done!

{---}

1.QX1O2A.jpg

I started of with placing down the iconic Midtown Manhattan buildings, or as many as I can giving what's available from the STEX and LEX.

2.4fD8xp.jpg

I also sketched out a loose map of where everything is so that, despite the scale being smaller, it would be proportionally correct- more or less!

3.S3kBkD.jpg

The Times Square was tricky to build, so for most of it I placed plazas and pedestrian areas since parts of Times Square have something similar.

4.ywpIPN.jpg

I eventually replaced the original version of Macy's with the new version complete with the air conditioning units and the concrete roof.

5.OKwjm8.jpg

Part of the fun of recreating Manhattan is taking poetic license with the area, for instance I added Kellydale2003's Royal Bank Plaza Hotel because a) it looked new, b) it had an overhang section and c) there are increasing numbers of newly constructed New York high-rises which are rather incongruous and don't fit with either the art deco or 50s/60s/70s architecture of older high-rises.

6.pImEB5.jpg

I managed to find some space for a thin sliver of Hell's Kitchen.

7.NbLLie.jpg

Once I develop the west side of this city tile, then this highway will become busier.

8.TTyStG.jpg

Adding Madison Square Gardens was a must.

9.W50f8U.jpg

Constructing the city blocks around the UN was huge fun! I used many of Mattb325's high-rise hotels to complete the area since it made sense for there to be fancy hotels by the waterfront. Yet the old art deco buildings still make their presence felt...

10.DBMGS6.jpg

The building lots and fillers have become so great and numerous that there's no point in using the Lot Editor! All I have to do is match up the right buildings to the right fillers.

Expect to see more of these mosaics, in future entries, for other New York landmarks.

That fractionally angled gap in the skyline is the route towards Times Square.

Lower Manhattan meets up with Midtown Manhattan.

I'm using Mandelsoft's LRM mod to obtain better night lighting... I may consider using Simfox's Darknite mod too...

And out we go...

20.ndNRh6.jpg

In a few months time this whole area will be complete.

Next entry I'm going back to Madison Plains, after that it's another entry from the areas of Manhattan which I haven't finished yet, then one final entry from Madison Plains, then a Brooklyn entry and then I'm going to spend some time on Cindersville and finish off the countryside and woodland areas. Still waiting for diagonal brownstones to really help me complete Brooklyn!

Have a great weekend!

Gorgeous mosaic at the end, there. I like your solution for recreating Times Square, but please don't tell me you put Macy's there.  Macy's is in Herald Square, not Times Square.

Fantastic images! Your city is beautiful. I like how you are creating your own city using the roots of New York. It is very fun to watch.

Looking at your photos, I want to recreate New York ... it's like a goal that I couldn't finish ...*:???:

I would like to suggest that you use this building to place it near Madison Square Gardenthat is the actual location.

Done. Also, you could complete New York if you put the time into it, you have the plugins to do so and a lotting ability which would beat my SC4 designs. Anyway, here's the updated area, whatdaya think?

The original New York Times Building really stands out. It would be great to see the Statue of Liberty overlooking New York Harbour.

Which one is the original New York Times Building? Unfortunately I don't have enough space for the Statue of Liberty!
