Riley and his Lucario tour around Cameran after their first win
Mew: Nyyyyaaaaahhh!!!
(Translation: Wheeeeeee!!!)
Riley: You did fantastic today! How are you feeling after the match?
R's Lucario: Not that exhausted, honestly. But even then, Gardevoir was a tough nut to crack!
Riley: We can go have lunch in the city, and we can explore some of its history. You can feel its impressive past through its aura.
R's Lucario: You're right! And it seems this place had some intense events going on, but is very tranquil nowadays.
Riley: Maybe we can explore some before the last three matches, how about it?
R's Lucario: Fine with me. We didn't come here just for the battles.
Riley: Would you look at that!
R's Lucario: What's this place? It shines with the energy of thousands of bright minds!
Riley: This is the Royal University of Cameran! And you're right, this place is full of talented students, professors and researchers. But it looks like a rather new facility.
R's Lucario: Are you sure? Those buildings looks almost as ancient as the Queen's Palace.
Riley: Don't be silly! You still have to practice sensing the aura of places before you can tell for sure.
R's Lucario: I guess so! I can already smell the traces of construction in here....and do any Pokémon study here?
Riley: I have no idea, and I don't think there's people around here to answer that, at least not right now.
R's Lucario: And what's that weird-looking path with steel bars and stone pieces?
Riley: That, my friend, is a railway. These are built for specially-designed vehicles to roll quickly between different locations!
R's Lucario: And....do people and pokémon ride those vehicles?
Riley: Of course! You might be used to the cargo railways back in Sinnoh and Iron Island, but these ones here are mainly for passengers....Tell you what, we can ride the next train that arrives here!
R's Lucario: This place....looks a lot bigger than I remember it when we first visited.
Riley: Very much so! For some reason people have been moving here in droves, and they need places to live, and amenities to make their daily life easy and comfortable. The latest of those is this very railway we're riding, but there's more to come.
R's Lucario: This place is amazing! So many trees and flowers, and buildings too!
Riley: And it gets better! Apparently that parcel there will be a new park. Which means there's also gonna be more people and pokémon around this place!
R's Lucario: And is that another park? Looks very colorful.
Riley: It also looks very new, maybe we can stop and have lunch there, there's food stands and restaurants in and around it.
Kiosk vendor: Hey! What can I get for you today?
Riley: Hi! I'll have two jelly donuts onigiri (stuffed rice ball) orders please! And four chocolate bars....and two large berry punch drinks.
Kiosk vendor: Anything else?
Riley: That'll be all. Charge it to my trainer card.
Kiosk vendor: Coming right up!
Riley: C'mon, you raced through those jelly donuts onigiris so fast! Didn't you want to enjoy them at least?
R's Lucario: No time for lunch, chocolate is where it's at!
Riley: Cameran looks so odd with those medieval townhouses mingling with apartment blocks and office towers.
R's Lucario: Maybe they like the medieval houses too much to let go of them. Even if the office towers use so much more steel!
R's Lucario: This place looks important. Lots of steel towers here!
Riley: Welcome to Palace Avenue, the only place of the Kingdom where you have more than one lane per direction, and where you can get a stunning view of the entrance of Cameran Palace, dead-center! And that monument there honors Sir Aaron, it's built like his staff.
R's Lucario: Staff? What did he use it for?
Riley: Before pokéballs, a few skilled trainers figured out how to use crystals from this valley to make an object that fulfilled the same purpose. That's how he was able to prevent his Lucario from following him to the Tree of Beginning.
Passer-by A: Is that Sir Aaron!?
Passer-by B: Isn't he dead, though!?
Riley: Excuse me ladies, I believe you're confusing me for a look-alike. I'm Riley, me and my team are taking a break after our first battle at the Festival of the Guardian tournament.
Passer-by A: Am I dreaming!? An elite trainer just addressed us!
Passer-by B: I know!! Pinch me, pinch me!! SOMEBODY PINCH MEH!!!!!
R's Lucario: Pinch coming right up!
Riley: Lucario! Behave yourself. That's no way to treat strangers, or no more chocolate for you, mister!
R's Lucario: Yes, master...
Riley: And here's the main plaza of the city. Beyond the roundabout and the rails is the Palace, and there's a much newer monument erected here!
R's Lucario: Who does it honor?
Riley: Well, Sir Aaron's Lucario, of course! That's a piece of historic mystery that was solved about ten years ago. It was at that time when said Lucario was released from the staff and ultimately ended up facing the same fate of Sir Aaron, saving the Kingdom from a collapse of the Tree of Beginning.
R's Lucario: I'm already baffled by how much this place has changed, I can't believe how hard it must have been for the poor guy to be released centuries after!
Riley: Believe me, Queen Ilene herself told me it was super traumatic, and confusing as well.
R's Lucario: I'm starting to feel the aura of a sacred place...
Riley: You mean the temple across the fountain plaza?
R's Lucario: More sacred than that. Like a shrine...
Riley: Could it be...?
R's Lucario: I believe that sign says Shrine of the Ancestors.
Riley: It does! And I'm impressed, you've truly managed to learn to read.
R's Lucario: Is it open?
Riley: Doesn't seem like it. The priests were at the festival, performing the blessing of combat as part of the inauguration of the tournament. We will visit again tomorrow, just in case it opens once more.
R's Lucario: Hmph....such a shame we couldn't go honor anyone there today...
Riley: Hmm....tell you what, we have a better place to visit today. We could go to the Palace, we have to head south along Palace Avenue to get there. If you keep honing your aura sensing skills, you will be able to perceive the rich history that has unfolded there.
R's Lucario: I guess that will do for now...
R's Lucario: The palace looks amazing from here!
Riley: Yeah! That first visit we had some years ago was less-than-ideal, the lake was blanketed in fog! It's such a rarity to get a day this clear in the Kingdom.
R's Lucario: Let's go in!
Riley: Wait for me! You know it's a long walk to get there!
R's Lucario: C'mon Master, you can run faster than this!
To be continued...
The pokémon images originate in the Pokémon anime, save for the chocolate scene, which is fan art by an unknown artist. Screenshots by me.
