Status Update

Before the the actual update I'd like to apologize that this took so long to get out, these last couple of weeks have been a bit rough with several different personal/family issues coming up at the same time and I got hit with another dose of bad news today. I'll try to be a bit more regular with this from now on.

If this is your first time reading Progress I recommend you go back to the first update (I call it Update Zero), which includes some important information about how this works. There is a link to it on the right sidebar.

The members of the wagon train have agreed to settle at the site where a creek enters a larger river. The surrounding region is hilly and the site is heavily wooded, but the travelers decided that looking for a site with less timber to clear was more risky with Winter approaching. The settlers have cleared a portion wooded area, and most people have decided to set up camp in the manmade clearing. The wood they have collected so far will be useful as they start to build more permanent dwellings.

Another smaller group decided to set up a camp near the river and try their hand at fishing the waters. The settlers here found evidence of Native American activity in the area.

The settlers held a meeting yesterday to decide how they would divide up the land in their new town. They decided to draw up a plat of the planned town. The current settlements are shown in the lighter lines under the lot markings.

They all agreed that the lots would be claimed on a first-come-first-served basis. They decided that settlers could choose to live outside the town itself and establish farms, hunting lodges, etc., but that they would have to clear the land on their own.

Join Action: You cannot join Progress in this update.

Character Action: There are two possible actions for characters in this update.

Action 1: Pick a lot and settle in the town or clear your land outside of town.

Action 2: Build a home or shop on the land you selected. (Only houses can be built outside of town.)

To perform a character action reply in the comments using the form "Character name selects lot x and builds a shop.

Community Poll: Decide on the first community structure to build.

The next entry will catch up with the settlers after their first Winter in Spring of 1859.

If you are wondering why people can't join this week there are a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it wouldn't really make sense for other settlers to come to a town that has yet to be built and the winter is a bad time to travel so it's unlikely many would make there way to the settlement at this time.

Secondly, it honestly makes things a bit easier for me and with everything going on I want to simplify the work on my side for the next update so I can get it out quickly and not have to put it off.

If you want to add a character that option will be available with the next update, which hopefully should be ready a lot more quickly than this one was.

I voted town hall.  Usually I'd say that the church would be one of the first things to declare it's presence, but I think the town hall would be a great foot hold for the town.

Great work so far! Love the small settlement you've set up in the woods.

Vincenzo Machiavelli selects Lot 32 and builds a shop with living quarters above.
The town's growing fast, really nice cj.

Edit: And if you're not gonna use it, I'd also like to have the space next to lot 32 for future use.

I feel a dock would be the most economical thing to do to get this town going. That or a market, I feel a Town Hall could wait a bit.

Keep up this awesome project!:)

Marshal Thibodeaux selects a beautiful waterside plot outside of town and builds a small farming cottage to call home.

Tomislav Ricov selects lot 8 and builds a home.

I also believe a market would be a better option - provides jobs and products for the community.

I voted for you to build a dock first, that would be the most viable investment because it can potentially attract commercial ships regionally or even nationally.

Looking around at the gathered settlers John turns to gaze at the surrounding woods and hills and decides that his life is out there, hunting and tanning hides. Not many people notice as he turns to wander away but someone does, grabbing his sleeve.

'Sorry son, were having us a palaver over what to build for the better of the town and would appreciate your say like.' a old fella asked.

Thinking quickly John choose a market, he would hopefully need the place to trade furs and meat once he'd got his small livelihood set up. Tipping his hat in farewell to the old fella, John continued heading out of town, preparing to find himself a place out ther in the quiet wooded hillside.

OOC: So yer I choose market and clearing myself a space up in the wooded hillside to set up a hunting lodge.

Market to trade with the native population - you may need to trade for some Turkeys otherwise you'll never get to invent Thanksgiving!

Heh - who needs SC2013 to have a multiplayer SimCity game? ;)

Theo Kinkade (and family) selects lot 28 and builds a home.

In my opinion it's better to build a Market for now.
