That Limerick boundary law is stupid, both cities have populations in excess of 100,000 (for Galway I include suburbs like Oranmore and Barna, and Limerick I just include the whole urban area). Another large rivalry in Ireland is between Dublin and Cork (aka. "The true capital of Ireland"), with Corkonians and Dubliners fighting over it for years.

What??? No Clonmel ??? That's got 16, 000 and a bit

3.gif>>So, Limerick's actually the 5th largest city in Ireland, or 3rd in the Republic of Ireland, which was were I think you were coming from. 3.gif

Also, I'm sick of the damn Irish media giving it such a bad name! All this "stab city" crap, it's a great city - I've been there countless times and love it! It's easy to access by road, rail and air (Shannon), so why have the Irish media got such a problem with it?

Another rivalry in Ireland is between Cookstown - Dungannon - Strabane. The three all have similar populations (10,000-15,000) and are trying to be County Tyrone's second town, after Omagh (pop. 21,380), which is, of course, my hometown! 2.gif (Of course, none will ever live up to Omagh's standards...)3.gif

Portsmouth Vs Southampton is most certainly up there, it seems to be the only one in this long list that actually ended up in around 500 people beating the crap out of eachother in recent times. March 2003, Portsmouth vs Southampton RIOT on the streets of Portsmouth. 300 arrested.

To jvlm.123 I hate Limerick, its ugly. Then again so is Dublin, but you can't blame Dublin because it's twelve times the population of Limerick. Also, driving through Limerick I've never seen so many CCTV cameras in all my life, there is a reason for it.

Don't know if its been already (too much reading) the biggest rival has to be London and Paris. There's a lot of history between the two.

Would not agree with that at all, living in Belfast it's more like Belfast vs Lisburn

Currently both are trying to win approval for the site of the new National Stadium, Belfast should clearly have it and just may do once the government is restored in May.

Belfast clearly beats Lisburn in many aspects.

Lisburn, despite having a city charter, is just a suburb of Belfast - it's population figures are included in the Greater Belfast area. 3.gif The new stadium should be built in Belfast itself, but have good transport access and be near a motorway and a railway station. 9.gif

Plymouth and Exeter are always clammering for retail mecca. Plymouth thinks it should be county seat because its the bigger city. It thought it could attract shoppers with the new Drake Circus but Exeters redevelopment has already attrated John Lewis, its better connected with the rail network and has more charm although thats not Plymouths fault.

Dallas vs Houston is a big one in Texas

For Dallas:

Dallas has DART which is much better than the Houston transit

Houston is dirtier (IMO)

DFW airport is larger than Houston Intercontinental (both are hubs for airlines tho, DFW= American Airlines, Houston= Continental)

Lotta rich folks in Dallas (good or bad?, idk)

For Houston:

Houston has one of the largest ports in the world

Johnson Space Center and Mission Control (Houston, we have a problem...)

Large Medical Center(s?)

Dallas was site of presidential assassination (Kennedy)

Both are threatened by nature, DFW has tornadoes (not recently tho) and Houston has hurricanes (Rita was bad and Katrina came close)

Both have traffic problems although i hear Houston's are ten times worse

Nothing violent like Portsmouth and Southampton tho (as far as I know)

and about the Portsmouth - Southampton rivalry...

wow...

i think both cities are crazy

the PFC thing on the stadium thing is really funny tho

however its really sad that people get violent over stuff like that... theyre both in the same country and follow the same queen... its just sad that brother would fight brother like that...

Don't forget, Bush Intercontinental Airport isn't the only airport. There is also Hobby Airport. So, combined, Houston is larger and has access to both people north (HIA) and south (Hobby) of downtown.

Dallas has DART which is much better than the Houston transitquote>

Agreed. Houston METROrail is still in it's earliest stages, but still, I think Dallas' is better and is much larger.

Lotta rich folks in Dallas (good or bad?, idk) quote>

I'm not sure what you mean. Dallas has richer people or more rich people than Houston or...?

Large Medical Center(s?) quote>

I'm not sure if that's a good thing or what. 3.gif That may mean we have sicker people. 2.gif But seriously, it sure brings a lot of awesome technology to Houston in the research field, including nanotechnology right up the road at Rice University.
But I must admit, the Medical Center is impressive. It looks like its own city!
FlightHoustontoDallas086.jpg

Both have traffic problems although i hear Houston's are ten times worse quote>

Indeed. However, it only depends where you live. In my area, it's not bad at all (northern suburb of Houston). And in general, the suburbs of Houston are pretty good with their traffic (minus the Katy Freeway). It's when you start going towards downtown when it becomes a problem thanks in part to TXDOT. Not all 5 million people go to the downtown, so it basically depends where you want to work and live.

Besides all that, Dallas and Houston have always been rivals (some are trying to make Atlanta and Houston a rival, but there's just no chance of a fight there. 3.gif ). Personally, I think both of those cities are incredible and great in their own ways. They're what make Texas  great state to live in.

Boston an New York is the biggest rivalry. It goes past just Red Sox/Yankees. Its the Jets/Pats, Bruins/Rangers, C's/Knicks, White Clam Chowder/Red Clam Chowder, North End Pizza/Brooklyn Pizza, colleges, museums it's just about everything. The citizens even try to be ruder than the other. It's great!!! By the way. Red Sox 52-31, Yankees 39-42, 12 games back.... 8 games out of the wild card!!! IT'S OVER YANKEES FANS!!! Start wondering about 2008 SUCKERS!!!!!

Micah:

remember Dallas also has Love Field and DFW serves both Dallas and Ft Worth (hence the name DFW)

about the rich ppl... well theres a lot of them and some of them are ridiculously rich... still not sure whether thats good or bad

many people travel from around the country and around the world to go to the Houston Medical Center

I also forgot to mention that Dallas is one of the most crime-infested cities in the US...

and of course I agree that both cities are great indeed. both are in the top ten for most populated US city proper and metro (Texas has three such cities, the third being San Antonio) both cities are so unique and yet they are so similar... both are so geographically far yet, in a way, so close... its great to be Texan (except for the fact that when u say Texan, they think of that idiot on Pennsylvania Avenue, for those of you that dont know wat i mean, i mean that idiot Bush)

I moved from west texas to seattle about 6 years ago... and I don't know how Tacoma feels, but Seattleites HATE tacoma... and we're always going on about the Tacoma Aroma... even though i've never smelt it. I'm from (near) Amarillo, TX originally, and it's sorta the same there. Even though I hate Amarillo, I hate Lubbock worse. Why? Because they're the rival, obviously! /shrug

I know a infamous one. Philadelphia and Pittsburg.

Well from a Philadelphian Standpoint I think they are jealous because we have a higher population and plus we didnt start as a steel town but the First Capital of the United states. We have all of the good sites while you have most of the battle sites. And for the most part our city is much more prominent because we are locate in line with Boston , New York , and Washington DC. So something tells me that they are just jealous. The only thing Philly can be just barely jealous of is that mountainus terrain.

Uh huh. How'd the Red Sox do last year, eh? And who's the one that went 86 years without winning the world series? Nobody wins every year, not even the Yankees. But we've still had more winning years than you, so shut your trap. *gives one fingered salute*

It may seem obvious, but Columbus vs Ann Arbor. UofM (scUM) has not beaten Ohio State in football or basketball since February of 2004. Maybe 2003, I can't really remember.

Also, Osaka and Tokyo in Japan have quite the rivalry. Yomiuri Giants (Tokyo) and Hanshin Tigers (Osaka) have about as much love for each other as Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers.

Hey Duke, Your a typical Yankee's fan, always have to look back in time. They don't want to face the fact that their franchise is in tourmole right now. $200 million payrol and they suck. Yor team is a long way from winning again. Maybe in 08 you can over pay to pick up some more old players off other teams scrap heap. With the Yankee's have there is no reason why they shouldn't win every year. It shows that the Yankees have poor management and poor ownership. Your team is outspending it's nearest competitor by $80 million and you 12 games out and below .500.. You can't make a trade to help you because you have nothing to trade because you've depleted your minor league system.

Trust me, there is no rivalry between Houston and Atlanta. The only one Houston has is between Houston and Dallas. I only think people in Atlanta think there's a challenge. 3.gif But if you talk to any Houstonian, they really don't follow Atlanta that much or have not even seen a picture of Atlanta's skyline.

Oh! I got one! It's Northern California: San Francisco v. Sacramento.

For San Francisco:

Great tourism.

Beautiful scenery.

Huge economic center.

Infrastructure center for Central Coast.

Bridges. Lots of bridges.

For Sacramento:

Tree capitol of the world. (We have the most trees of any city in the world. TAKE THAT PARIS!!!)

Beautiful nature from the convergence of the Sacramento and American Rivers.

Rapidly growing economic importance.

I believe it's in the Top Five fastest growing cities in America. Las Vegas is numero uno.

It's the Capitol, for pete's sake!

Beautiful neighborhoods, with relatively low property prices compared to, well, anywhere in California.

Lots of parks.

It's the city that caused people to even come to the West Coast!

I rest my case. TopCliff

If we are gonna go by country stand points then I would say USA and France are one of the biggest. Oh boy do we hate them Frenchies (although I don't hate them because I don't know any french people).

From a city stand point I'd say San Francisco and Oakland are fairly big rivals. From my trips down there to San Jose (if I had the choice to live anywhere but where I live now I'd live in San Jose) and San Fran alot of the conversation that I've heard is how the lower class Oakland is horrible and what not. I'd still say that NYC vs Boston is the biggest.

Around where I live in northern Idaho there are LOTS of rivals to name a few: Post Falls vs Coeur d' Alene, Coeur d' Alene vs Spokane WA, Post Falls vs. Sandpoint.

Of course none of you have ever heard of most of those cities lol, but Post Falls and Sandpoint are probably the biggest mainly because of the high school wrestling and football teams. Haha thats North Idaho for ya.

Poor management? No. Poor ownership? Perhaps. Poor training was the killer this year, what with all those injuries early on. They had a new trainer this year, whose new techniques were supposed to help prevent injuries. Naturally he got fired rather early in the season.

I'll definitely agree with you on that there's a problem with continually attempting to pick up overhyped star players past their prime. A lot of Yankee fans complain about that.

As for the looking back in time aspect, it's no secret that the golden age of the Yankees is long gone. What really killed it was expansion. After all, being the one team out of 16 is considerably easier than the one team out of 30, especially since that means talent is more spread out. There is no one dominant team in baseball these days. It's anybody's game, really. Everyone just hates on the Yankees because they resent the high payroll and the legendary status. But it was stars of the past, not the present that made that status, and the high payroll is not without its downsides. The prices of tickets to and concessions at Yankee games are quite high. But they still sell games out, and they still turn a profit, since there are just so many people out there willing to pay the prices. It's the whole "what the market can bear" strategy. Charge as much as you can get away with.

A lot of people also like to say that "it's easy to be a Yankee fan". And while that was certainly true from 1923 to 1963, since then it hasn't been so much. The Yankees are not winning the world series practically every year anymore. They're making it into the postseason practically every year, but the same could be said of the Braves or, yes, the Red Sox. And somehow hating on them isn't a nationwide fad.

The problem is that people for whatever seem to perceive the Yankees as a big evil bully. So, naturally, people love to see them get beaten buy supposed underdogs.

Though, the fact of the matter is, baseball as a whole simply isn't what it used to be, and there's been more than one contributor to that. The main one is the ever-growing perception that baseball is a "pussy sport", since there's not much action until someone hits the ball, thus making it increasingly boring to watch or play for much of today's action and adrenaline seeking culture. Football has come to be perceived as the ultimate manly sport, since it's a lot more physically intense. Today you see lots of little boys dreaming of growing up to be football players where you used to see such about being baseball players. The national pastime, as it's been dubbed, has become rather passè to popular culture. There are two other big hits baseball has taken, though. The first was the strike back in '94. It was simply appalling to a lot of people that given how much money the players make they were still going on strike wanting more. The other, of course, is the whole steroid issue. It's turned a lot of people away from the game, including me and my father. I'm simply not paying attention to things like I used to. I've rather grown out of it.

I'm still just as willing as ever to fight with Red Sox fans, though, as you've seen here.5.gif
