Gardening!

So, with the recent arrival of spring (in some parts of the country/world, that is), it is time to pull the tools out of the shed, and start working in the yard! So, does anyone else here on ST do any gardening?

I'm an avid gardener, so let's share some tips:

-I'm a perennial person, so I'm fond of some of the hardier plants. Angel's Hair is a great example. If you grow it just right, it gets HUGE.
-Roses look good, but I find they require a lot of upkeep. Also, ivy is good for borders, but it will grow on anything, and it gets kinda weary over the years. I use red cedar chips to bring out some colour in my gardens, but go with brown if you want a more natural look (I think). I find pine chips dry out too quickly.
-Some great annuals: Kalanchoe, Marguerite Daisies, Dilanthus (I love Dilanthus) and some petunias. I like hyacinths in my garden, but I find the blooms don't last long enough for my preference..
- Who else uses hanging plants? I lean away from impatiens, but fuchsia, which can be absolutely stunning, makes a great hanging plant.
Not huge on watering. A good gardener knows not to water during the day.
-I'm a variety person. I just get excited looking through the gardening catalogue.

I'm not a big gardener because I have this fear of bugs....but I work on the gardens in the Morning and evening once everything is alive and growing...I prefer perennials so I like things I don't usally need to replant...I love Marigolds and Sunflowers...yet saddly I didn't get a chance to grow any sunflowers last year..My dad does most of the lawn for and the unweeding...I do all the watering and I monitor how much water each section gets....morning Glory's are problobly our Pick when it comes to easy flowers to grow. for Hanging plants Petunias are pretty good...I hope that by Late spring I can start up the sprinkler systems and start putting back the plumming...I love those timers..

My mom is busy on her work so im the one taking care of the garden.

I like it simple, grass, sunflowers and a small zen pond. There's also a cherry blossom tree at the center.

Im planning to grow potatoes this weekend.

That sounds like me!  I hate having to work with living things because I can never keep them alive.  Last year's biology experiment is a good example--bugs ate the plants to pieces.

@hym: Well, your conclusion isn't totally accurate... I mean, you managed to keep the bugs alive, right?

Currently, as an in-class biology experiment, we're growing plants. I've got pumpkins, black beans, and radishes. So far, though, I think that the radishes are the only ones to have managed to germinate...

Maybe I'll replant those tomato plants in the backyard. And the strawberry plants. (They made damn good fruit! )

In addition to our private arboretum, be have some large perennial beds that we fill in with annuals as necessary.

Today is the equinox with sunrise and sunset exactly 12 hours apart. We are expecting a week of sunny, if cold, weather. There is still snow around, but some of my daffodils are showing some spirit. No sign of the crocuses yet, but they are in a sheltered corner and my not have seen enough sun to get going yet.

Last year we had some really gigantic tiger lilies and bearded iris. We are hoping for a repeat performance, with some reproduction this year. The oriental poppies have become quite large, and when they quit for the first time, the hostas planted behind them take over.

We have a few miscellaneous things and some wild flowers. The Sweet William and the cone flowers are now large enough to need tomato cages to keepp them from falling over, and we are going to need bigger supports for the peonies.

Oh! I guess I forgot to mention the clematis'. The two on the front of the house produce quite a spectacular display.

Meh. When I was younger I planted some different fruits/vegetables. When I get my own place, I'm not even gonna have a yard...

Just got some seeds from Thompson & Morgan yesterday and will plant this weekend. We're a bit behind. Some are houseplants for my son's Teifoc brick garden and some are flowers for the yard. I like climbing things - Zepherine roses, thunbergia, nasturtium, clematis. Of course here in Maryland a few black-eyed susans are mandatory, and I usually have some sunflowers and lots of oriental lilies. My yard smells like a wedding about June. Daffodils bloomed right on time for St. Patrick's Day again this year and the weeping cherry finally has some buds. My favorite saying about gardening is that gardeners must be optimists.

I love gardening, but I'm not very good at it. However in previous seasons I have managed to grow most of the vegetables I need. But this year we have a very bad drought so I may not plant anything at all. We are only allowed to water with hand held hoses or buckets and if we don't get rain soon we will have to use buckets only.

Downunder we are going into autumn which is a great time to plant vegetables and cold weather flowers. I like the winter annuals like violas and pansies and St Patricks day is the traditional day for planting sweet peas.

In the D.C. area the highlights are the azaleas and cherry blossoms. In upcoming weeks I'll be taking my children to the Tidal Basin and the National Arboretum to see both. I also love bonsais, which I also go the Arboretum to see during an annual event. I used to grow them but they kept getting stolen from my neighborhood... sigh...

My brother is simply mad over gardening

He's getting all excited now with spring arriving and is already planning what to do to the back yard. Last year he filled it up with flowers, we planted grass which we kind of lost for a few years after getting the dog, so during the summer we had a beautiful garden. Now it's a little less pretty as it wasn't touched all that much during the winter, but my brother is getting all set up to revive it!

Well I'm only 14 so I haven't had much of a chance to do much gardening yet but I do help out my parents occasionally as I do like doing it. This year are garden is going to need a big clean out but it is still a little cold to get started yet.

ROFL!!!!!  I actualy jump-started our gardening this year, I suggested that we go big, and started on it, and now Mom and Dad are out there working and I'm in here sitting.   I'll join them I think once I've finished this post.  Anyway, we have a big yard, so we have a little...erm...lot, of just about everything.    Well, gardening time, later all!

That wasn't what I was thinking when I said that I couldn't keep anything alive.  (That is a pretty funny viewpoint though.)  But when it comes to the color of my thumb, it's black or worse.

I really HATE gardening. Espeically mowing the lawns! We have like an acre and a half of lawn!! It takes forever!!

But I have to do it though.......I'm thinking of just putting grass-killer down all over the lawn, then I wont have to mow it for a while.

Our family is pretty big on gardening though, we grow alot of our own food and we have a tonne of plots etc.

Well, even tho Im still using the hair-dryer on the snow to make it go away, its really started to melt now, and even tho we only have a like 8meters squared piece of garden, we have all sorts of fruit growing and the late summer when we can start picking them is always great!

Oh yes, spring is definitely here. Now it only drops below freezing at night.

And yet, by the time July and August come around, it's not unheard of for the temperature to be three digits. Temperatures in New York have a nice big range.
