Even though I wasn't a member during those times, I visited Simtropolis a few times during those times. Version one and two- Well, I personally thought they were ugly looking... Version three actually kind of looked like Version 4.

Well, ST1 and ST2 were before my time, but here's a couple of my screenshots of ST3:

http://www.imgcity.net/server/primary/somethingwrong.JPG
http://www.imgcity.net/server/primary/STsummer.JPG

Unfortunately, they both were taken before offsite hosting became widespread, and thus were both carelessly converted to JPEGs, which was all the board accepted for upload. So I apologize for the poor image quality....

There is a cache of old Simtropolis sites which I discovered a few weeks before. I think it has all the versions except 5.0, including the versions 1, 2 and 3 you requested.

I found this at a site called the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, where they store snapshots of popular sites like eBay, the BBC, Yahoo and Google.

They don't store snapshots, just page sources (therfore if an image no longer exists, the page will not dislpey) and secondly, they try and store all websites they can, by using spiders, like Google I belive.

Actually, they do have some of the images kept in the database but images refrenced to in CSS files (backgrounds, possibly others) aren't saved, with the CSS files still linking to their original location (like https://www.simtropolis.com/(whatever here) ), so pages that use CSS largely (like ST) don't have all the different images saved with the page and look odd.

Anyway, kinda sad with some of the pages since they used to still have the images on there, such as with ST 2.

Actually Simvision looks like a poor knockoff of ST 3.

Ah I knew there was going to be one that would ask this, and then some one else that wanted the old forums back but really like I have said some place else the majority wins fair and square...

ST5 stays...

I think I will point out quickley that BarbulaM1, huskerman007 and Clindhartsen are all SimVision administrators and have worked very hard on making the website what it is today so if you going to complain about SimVision at least be constructive. Or even better don't mention it at all since as sloppet said this is about this website, not SimVision.

Wow... I was totally off with version 3. I though 3 was like 4, but I guess I was wrong.

Just wait 2 years from now when people start asking what 4 looked like...

Dude, take it easy. All I am saying is that I think the simvision design is a bit clumsy and unorganized. I was in no way offending the site!

I don't think you understood what I meant. Since this is getting a little off topic now can you please If you or anyone else want to discuss this further either PM me or use the private topic system, I would be happy to talk there.

All I'm saying is that at the time when Simvision first came out it was an obvious copy of ST at the time. You can find the original thread where this was discussed if you want.

Yes, SV used to look like ST (what do you expect, ST is a great site 4.gif)

Now to get back on topic, does anyone happen to have the link to Simtropolis 1?, It had a different name, however I forgot it 15.gif. It was just a forum, but it would be nice to have an archive of it4.gif.

Standby.

ST 1.0 was just a forum under the name "Simcity 4 Discussion Zone". It was launched in October of 2002.

ST 2.0 came out on January 11th, 2003, the day that SC4 was released. this was the beginning of the idealbb era. All users of ST 1 were given accounts, but no data was carried over, meaning everyone started at square one with no posts and their join date as 01/11/2003. This was also the first time the actual domain name of simtropolis.com was used.

However, the old site wasn't taken down. I remeber (this was quite a while ago) that someone posted a link to the board which at the time was still there, and a few newer members had registered there and made a few posts. 21.gif

I doubt it's still there, though....

EDIT: no, it is still there! This is ST 1.0:

Woah, EZBoard... blast from the past alright.. I'm amazed it's still there... 3.gif

I've learned a lot of things with each successive upgrade to Simtropolis, so the changes are not only aesthetics.  The actual programming for the interactive parts of the site (like the STEX) gets more refined each time.

You may already know (or can guess) I'm not really a programmer, (I'm a designer), so most times I just wing it, until I learn a better way to do things, usually the hard way 3.gif

Yes, we do upgrade on average of once per year'ish... But ST5.0 came a little sooner than I expected, and was mainly prompted by the sore performance of Idealbb we've suffered through.  I did read every thread complaining about timeouts and lockups and non-responses from the old boards, so we went to work looking for a better solution.

I really liked Idealbb at the start, but it seems we change and grow faster than the idealbb developers can keep up.

At any rate, I'm really pleased with ST 5.0, and finally we have a unification of programming language (we were always ColdFusion site vs ASP forums).

I do appreciate all the feedback, even the negative ones (so long as they are constructive 3.gif )... and we're going to keep on keeping on so that when SimCity 5 makes its debut.... 43.gif  *ahem*

Cheers all! 3.gif

I still like version 3. It was so organised looking.. I'm not one for the bubbly bright colours really (unless their blue) and I have sensitive eyes so darker colours are better (which is why I spent so much time here, it's the darkest forum I post it)

Actually, if you can, change the background of posts to a darker shade of something (light blue or teal, to compliment the beige) and make the writing a bit lighter, maybe a darker grey or blueish colour. The softer contrast is better for the eyes and makes it easier to read.

This place is a little too bright, but the blue/green/beige theme is second only to the original. And it was colour coded, too. That was cool. Made it seem organised.

And where the heck is the banner? That's a stock image from maxis! How about a city scape that changes during the day, a day time scene during day, and a night scene at night or something. That would be cool.
