This is a CJ focusing on Riviera Island, an island located in the middle of the Indian Ocean.  The region I am using is custom made, and I am far from done.  I plan to start developing my region and cities as I continue to work on the region.  I have the Northeastern part of the island already completed, and that is where I will start developing first.  The region itself is huge, made up of all Large cities.  It is 10 by 10.  Well, here is a preview, a few pictures of the Northeastern part of the region.  I will have an update on my first city in Riviera Island soon.  Hope you guys enjoy.

<ahttp://img150.exs.cx/img150/7150/northeast36ur.jpg align=baseline>

Please keep in mind the region is definitely not complete yet.  An update will come very soon.  Comments welcome!

    Riviera Island's history begins in the year 2000 with a little settlement called Mayfina.  The island is owned by Nedal Ezzeddine, who has decided to turn it into a country of its own.  He has also named himself President for as long as he wishes, which makes sense considering he owns the place.  Anyway, back to the story......

    The very first settlement in Riviera Island was named Mayfina.  A small village at the mouth of the Gredden River on the north coast of the island, Mayfina has developed to about 645 residents.  It is completely reliant on imports and its small agricultural base to keep itself alive.  The region itself is abudant with both flora and fauna and the weather is terrific.  There is a sub-tropical feel to the place that will undoubtably lure in millions of residents and tourists when it becomes developed enough.
    <ahttp://img187.exs.cx/img187/8610/mayfinaregion5nu.jpg align=baseline>

     Lets take a look at Mayfina itself.  We will be viewing it from a South - North perspective, so Up on the picture is actually going towards the South.  Anyway, there are a few farms in the area, neccessary to grow the main source of food on the island, vegetables!  There already seems to be a dish that the locals favor, rice with the Palm Oil sauce they get from the trees found here along with some fish.
    <ahttp://img207.exs.cx/img207/9580/aerial20009tn.jpg align=baseline>

    The seaport is really just a small operation, barely able to handle anything larger than a yacht.  Currently, it is the President who ships over any goods requested by the people of Mayfina on his own boats.  The other thing of interest is the way Mayfina gets its water and power.  As you can see, there is a man-made irrigation canal of which the fresh water of Mayfina comes from.  The President has set up a small dam, and for now, it has been more than serviceable.  The windmill is also situated there, and that has also been serviceable in delivering 24 hour a day electricity to the residents of Mayfina.

    <ahttp://img230.exs.cx/img230/4017/churchandstores20002bn.jpg align=baseline>

    - In the picture above, you will see the Carlito Church and the only two commercial set ups in Mayfina.  All of them are located on the very cleverly named Church Street.  Jake's Mini Mart, owned by Jake Dunn, is, well, a mini mart.  All of the residents' shopping is done there, and he does carry a pretty large variety of groceries when taking to account the size of his shop.

    - Right next to the Mini Mart is Bob's Diner, owned by Bob Lansing.  Not the cleanest of places, but always friendly, Bob's Diner is the place to be Sunday mornings.

    - Carlito's Church is run by Priest John Stauton, a wise and friendly man who can be seen roaming the town on weekdays advertising the coming Sunday mass.  The Church itself can seat 425 people, but the the maximum it has had was 234.  The Priest, however, is making all the effort he can to break that number.  In fact, some might say he is becoming a little bit obsessed....nonetheless, a very generous man who deserves the title given to him.

    <ahttp://img230.exs.cx/img230/6623/clinic20003fi.jpg align=baseline>

    - On Alton Road, the Mayfina Medical Clinic can be found.  The President felt it was an absolute priority for the residents to have someplace to go incase of a medical emergency, and he is spot on.  The people of Mayfina have been delighted with the service and hospitality they find at the clinic, as everyone, from those with broken bones to those with paper cuts get treated immediately and professionally.

    So there you have it, folks, the first development update of Riviera.  Hopefully, this will garner interest and keep me going, because as long as there is interest, Riviera Island will remain constantly updated. The next update will feature more development on Mayfina and perhaps some more looks at the newly terraformed parts of Riviera Island.  Comments will be more than appreciated!

    Just a quick update on some of the going ons in Mayfina...

    <ahttp://img121.exs.cx/img121/4355/mayfinaaerial200022of.jpg align=baseline>

    From the last time we left Mayfina till now, the city has grown from to approximately 1,500 residents.  Farms continue to develop outward and little stores continue to pop up here and there.  Here is a detailed look at some of the development that has taken place:

    <ahttp://img121.exs.cx/img121/2681/firedepartment20001bh.jpg align=baseline>

    Just to be clear on something, this will be a relatively slow moving CJ, focusing more on details of life in Riviera Island. Much like Turnwood and with a touch of Belleville, you can say. Hope it all works out well.

    I like it very much. I just fiddled around with an inner-city area in a 200.000 city, and it's a nice and somehow relaxing and comforting change to watch such an idyllic and peaceful rural community slowly grow.

    I also like the detail you put into this. By this, I don't mean only the text; your village has some nice details as well. You didn't just plop that soccer field into a street square, and I like those irrigation canals and trees on and around the fields. Nice touch! Personally, I enjoy this kind of CJ almost more than people just showing off their latest skyscrapers. Keep it up and good luck! 2.gif

    Thank you for the comment. Yeah, I really enjoy the more detailed aspect of Simcity, concentrating on little things, little areas and making a story out of it. Hope you keep reading the CJ!

    (Note: Mayor Tim, I have taken your advice and changed the color of the water.  It looks much better. Thanks for the constructive criticism.)

    Well, Mayfina continues to develop at a constant pace.  The last time we checked up on it, the population was about 1,500.  Well now, the population has pushed past 5,000.  Here is a look at the region surrounding the town of Mayfina as a whole:

    <ahttp://img144.exs.cx/img144/3475/mayfinaregion29ji.jpg align=baseline>

     I know, why is West Mayfina given that name when it is actually east of Mayfina?  Well, there is no easy non embarressing answer to that question.  You see, the first people to cross the river where actually the Compass family, who, oddly enough, has no sense of direction and thought they were heading west.

    <ahttp://img144.exs.cx/img144/6672/mayfinaaerial20003bi.jpg align=baseline>

    -   A Bus System has been introduced to the town, which currently holds 4 bus stops.  They are shown above with the number of passengers per day listed above.  Congestion has been eased greatly on Mayfina's narrow streets with the introduction of the very first transportation system in all of Riviera Island, not very difficult considering this is the only settlement thus far.  Because of this development, the very first Government Sector has been created, the TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT.  It currently employs 5 people, holds its office in downtown Mayfina, and is led by Frank Tea.

    -  As one might have noticed, there has been development across the Gredden River.  It has been named West Mayfina.  Originally, the residents got across the river by boat, but the government wasted little time bringing in the funds to build a bridge to further fuel the development of West Mayfina.  The Frontanne Bridge, since its completion, has become one of the symbols of this united Mayfina town.

    <ahttp://img144.exs.cx/img144/9708/presidenthouse20009wa.jpg align=baseline>

    -   As shown above, President Nedal has moved to Riviera Island permenantly to show his solidarity with his people and hope in the country.  The Mansion is worth $3.3 million, contains 10 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms.  The party he threw at the opening ceremony of his house turned out to be quite crazy, with many a world leader showing up and having a great time.

    <ahttp://img144.exs.cx/img144/8245/chemicalplant3yt.jpg align=baseline>

    -   Perhaps the biggest development to have taken place is the building of the Riviera Chemical Plant.  Very important to the economy of Riviera Island, the President has many investors who have put their money into the creation of the plant.  He would like to say become completely Rivieran owned, but for now, the government owns 51% of it, the other 49% going to foreign investors.

    -   Secretly, the President has some of his top scientists working in the plant has he tries to develop weapons for the Rivieran Army.  He figures that Riviera Island is going to become to big and popular that it needs a proper Army to defend it.

    <ahttp://img159.exs.cx/img159/5536/westmayfina22cf.jpg align=baseline>

    -   Taking a closer look at Mayfina, the biggest shop in the area is the FRONT CLOTHING shop, owned by George Front.  West Mayfina shares Mayfina Main's quiet and peaceful serenity.  Farms have also developed this side of the Gredden River, with some of the farmers arguing that the soil on this side is even richer than the ones across the river.

    <ahttp://img159.exs.cx/img159/5344/mayfinamain1vw.jpg align=baseline>

    -   Mayfina Main, as it has become called, continues to develop.  There has been talk about upgrading the seaport so it can support Mayfina, because the current one is just not cutting it anymore.  The issue will be brought up to the President, it is said.  Development near the Seaport has started to go upwards, with some medium density buildings rising up.  The area over has become known as the Downtown Area, with most of the town's commerce situated in that area.

    Thats it for now, hope you guys enjoyed the update!  Comments are welcome, please feel free to post whatever comes to mind.  The next update will be soon, so stay tuned!

    Wow, more beautiful pictures! It's just great how you turn 3 or 4 boring heavy industry buildings into something both nice to look at and plausible from a story point of view. I just hope the pollution won't affect the surrounding fields...41.gif
    And in Mayfina, even a tiny downtown is developing...

    One suggestion: Could you deactivate those annoying U-Drive-it symbols?

    For now, the population of Mayfina has not complained about any polution coming from the Riviera Chemical Plant, perhaps because its supplies so many jobs to the town.  But as the town expands, I am the sure the matter will be brought up to perhaps relocate the plant some further....

    I do have a couple of questions:

    1) How can I de-activate the U - Drive - it?

    2) What is the hotkey to take pictures off the keyboard?

    Thanks a bunch for reading!

    Some shots of the terraforming Ive been doing on the region.  The region is about 100 Large cities, its 10 by 10, so its huge.  Anyway, here are a couple of shots.  The first one is of an area to the west of Mayfina, while the second one is on the eastern coast of the island. <ahttp://img170.exs.cx/img170/3804/middle5ey.jpg align=baseline>

    To deactivate the U-Drive symbols, go into the My Sims menu - that's the third and last one of the main menus: God Mode, Mayor Mode, My Sims (or whatever it is called). Inside this menu, there's an option to turn the symbols on/off.

    Concerning a hotkey for screenshots, I'm not sure because I use the in-game function myself. I have a progra, capable of making screen grabs, and you can configure your own hotkey there (e.g. [strg]+[F11] ), but as soon as I switch back to Sim City, this hot key no longer works.7.gif

    I'm sure somebody here will be able to help you, though.

    Back to topic: That's really a huge region you have made! Are you going to make it all rural areas, or are you also planning to build some villages, towns or even a huge metropolis? Whatever you do, you ought to have loads of time and space left to keep this CJ alive until SC5 comes out, hehe...3.gif

    I'll help you! hehe
    Well if you want to do a screen capture or a screen shot, you just press the print scrn sysrq button wich is up right on ur keyboard, to the left of your scroll lock button. If you have a Normal keyboard that is.. heh
    After you have pushed the button you'll have to exit SC4, I would recommend using Alt+Tab (Tab button is the button over your caps lock button), and then open paint and copy the pic that you captured simply by pressing ctrl+v .
    when you have saved ur pic you can enter SC4 again by pushing Alt+Tab!
    Have fun!

    Hope that it was clear enough... hehe if not just pm me or something.

    BTW! Great CJ!

    Mayfina continues to develop on both sides of the Gredden River, including the expanding farmlands, which have been spreading further inland.  Here is a look at the region:

    <ahttp://img104.exs.cx/img104/8822/aerialmayfina20018se.jpg align=baseline>

    Mayfina is now 2 years old.  Founded in 2000, the town has grown to just under 10,000 residents in 2 years, not a bad number.  Experts predict that the growth rate will only get larger as more and more people here about this new country in the gorgeous Indian Ocean.

    Mayfina itself continues to spread on the coast and up the river, while the farmlands continue to spread inland.  Here is a look:

    <ahttp://img104.exs.cx/img104/5470/aerial20014dp.jpg align=baseline>

    <ahttp://img104.exs.cx/img104/4128/downtown20018zo.jpg align=baseline>

    -  The Downtown area has been showing signs of life and development.  The first area out of the seaport is Downtown, and new immigrants that have been coming in found cheap housing near the business district.  Because of this growing population, there has become a need to have some cops on the road to make sure that no crime happens, and with that, the very first PD in Riviera Island has opened its doors just across from the Seaport.

    -  The government, with the growing amount of money it has to deal with, decided that instead of just putting the government money in safeboxes, they will open up an official bank.  Mayfina First National Bank is government owned but is also open to the public for operation as a normal bank.  If you dont like the service there, well, take a 5 minute walk down Hilton Street and you will find yourself at Lam Banking.  Not as sophisticated as the First National Bank, it has a more homely appeal to it.  Take your pick: Power and Sophistication, or Service and Homeliness.

    <ahttp://img104.exs.cx/img104/6052/richarea20013gq.jpg align=baseline>

    -  An area in the northeast part of Mayfina has developed known as the Mansion Area.  Currently, this is where Mayfina's Neaveou Rich reside, including the President.  A very high class neighborhood, none of the mansion cost less that $2.5 million.

    So there you have it.  Mayfina continues to develop.  What will come up next? Will there be a new settlement set up?  How important is the government becoming? And what about the 1st Mayfina Soccer Championship? Stay tuned......Comments more than welcome!

    I really like the looks of this region, and I don't say that about many CJs that I come across. Mayfina looks particularly nice, and realistic, which is what I strive for most in this game. I would reccommend you build the next town at the junction of the Verde and Gredden Rivers, mostly on the north side of that river junction. Also, try to connect some farms or a smaller town in between Mayfina and the new town.

    Nice job, and I look forward to more. 10.gif

    Thanks for the compliments.  Sounds like a good idea, it was one of my chosen places, to develop it at the junction of the Verde and the Gredden Rivers.  Its a good location? What do the rest of you guys think?

    I think the location is fine; many historical cities have been founded on peninsulas because of the good strategical position and access to the river as a means of transportation.
    Another nice site would be Tuflar Bay.

    The place where those mansions developed sure looks like a very pleasant spot to live... I'm afraid I couldn't afford the $ 2.5 million, though.9.gif

    And I gotta go search the STEX for that National Bank; it's a good idea you made it government-owned because it looks so... so... imperial? official? more-than-business-like? representative? Dang, you know what I'm getting at. 2.gif

    Another thingy:
    Wise Guy poetry time! 39.gif

    I hate to be telling,
    but there's a small glitch
    concerning the spelling:
    It's spelled Nouveau Rich. 9.gif

    Hehehe, never mind... sometimes I can't help it.

    Glad to hear that you will be able to post so much more, but do take your time. Looking forward to the next post already...35.gif

    An MG he brought with him from England when he moved here.  A friend of the President, in return for calling Riviera Island his new home, President Nedal shipped his car to Mayfina for free.

    Thanks for those who put their input on where the new settlement should be.  As suggested, I will be developing it at the bend between the Verde and Gredden Rivers.  I have already started spreading the Farmlands south towards the new settlement area.

    <ahttp://img190.exs.cx/img190/4279/newsettlement19os.jpg align=baseline>

    Taking a closer look at Mayfina itself, we see there has been development down the river.  For the first time, the Aerial shot is actually in the proper direction! Anyway, a few thing have happened since.  As pointed out on the Aerial shot, development continues to spread down the Gredden River.

    It is still unclear where the direction of Mayfina's development is headed.  Forecasters predict that sooner or later, development will start replacing the farmlands inland, but so far, all the progress has been going down with the river.

    - Mayfina prides itself now with its newly developed seaport.  The crane itself cost $3 million, while the entire other construction of the site cost $2 million, totalling just around $5 million for the entire project.

    - Mayfina has already started reaping the benefits and, thanks to some shrewd recruitment by President Nedal, the first international company has opened up in Mayfina.  Phillips Electronics has opened up a TV Factory just outside of Mayfina in the Farmlands.  In order to get them to come, the President supplied them with a Bonded Warehouse and a huge tax break for importing goods into the island to assemble here.  So much, infact, that it is cheaper to ship goods to Riviera Island and assemble them here and then ship them out to the African, Middle Eastern, and Indian Markets than it is to ship them to their assembly lines there.

    Thats it for now, please feel free to comment! Next update we will take a look at the Football (Soccer) Tournament going on in Mayfina, as well as continued development.  Perhaps we will even see the first signs of development over at the bend of the Gredden and Verde Rivers......Stay tuned!
