@skyfire: awesome ... many thanks ... now I can really plug on with the OCAD! 9.gif

@patfirefghtr: nice to see you Pat. Yep it's going through the update. Render has just completed so all that's left is the 'fiddling' with it 9.gif

    Slaytfork Mill Revised

For my 100th upload to the STEX I have decided to revisit my most popular BAT to date, and have rescaled, retextured, and remodelled parts that I thought needed it. Additionally, this time the model is an overhanging model so that it can be, as shown in the pictures above, be plopped alongside normal ingame water. As the end of the mill (from the top edge of the power house to the end of the log slide) overhangs it is possible, with some care, to plop the model and then terraform the land underneath it. The 'on land' part of this is a 6x7 Landmark Lot. You can find this on the STEX ... here.

Like the original model, this one produces it's own power but still, for some reason, will not transmit it's power to neighbouring areas. I have not simply updated the original model which is still available on the STEX here. This means that you do not need to delete that model should you have it in use. Also, this earlier model is at a much larger scale which, though out of scale with the remaining Maxis buildings, seems to work well in rural areas on it's own.

The best way to position this lot is to terraform your water and then select the plot of land you want to plop the mill onto. Now, flatten the area next to the water until it cannot go any lower. I do this with the normal terraform tools until I have all the squares within the zone just showing water. I then raise a single square a fraction and then smooth the lot using that square as a reference. Basically, the land should be at the lowest level possible for this lot to look right next to the water. I am sure that some trial and error will produce the right effect/positioning.

I will be releasing the Mill office and the water tower/pump house as seperate lots in the near future.

    Mill Office

This is the Mill Office as found on my large Slaytfork Mill model so that the mill can have an office in town. It is presented here as a 1x2 Landmark Lot, a 2x2 CO$$ Stage 3 Lot, and a prop for use in your own creations. If you do use the prop in any lots you release, please do not include the prop with your release, but instead point your dependency to the file on the STEX. Many thanks

You can find this one ... here.

Mill Water Tower and Pump House

A useful addition to any forest location, a water tower and associated pump house as found on my Slatfork Mill model. The water tower/pump house sits on a 2x1 lot and produces 1000 gallons of pure clean Sim Water each and every month and can be found, appropriately enough, in your Water menu. You can find it on the STEX ... here.

I love this type of stuff.  Seems to be quite a historical theme going on here lately!  Now if I could be patient enough to download on this ridiculous connection, I'd be all set!  Great stuff, Onlyplace!

Thanks for your comments JBSimio - much appreciated, as is all the feedback on the STEX.

    Desert Cantina

Continuing my series of adobe desert buildings, here is a little Desert Cantina that would look well in any desert situation from Mexico to North Africa. This small BAT is to form the basis of a step-by-step tutorial that will enable you to make this model with gmax and the BAT. You cn find this on the STEX ... here.

It is presented here as a 2x2 Landmark Lot, a 2x2 CS$ stage 2 Lot, and a prop for use in your own lots. The different Lots are included in seperate .dat files so you can pick and chose the ones you instal.

    day.jpgnight.jpg

If you use the prop in any lots you release please do not include the prop with your release but instead point your dependency to the file on the STEX. Thank you.

I am now working on the tutorial and will post that under a seperate thread as soon as it is complete. The tutorial will be accompanied by my gmax model for you to download, complete with the textures I have used 9.gif

    Carlton House (a WIP)

Here's a sneak preview of the next building to come from the OP4 stable. This is currently having it's nightlights added, and then I have the render to endure 15.gif

Carlton House is based on an architects concept for luxury apartments in central London. The Penthouse at the top is my addition as the original building was, in my opinion, a bit plain and uninteresting there.

My intention is to make this model available as an R$$$ growable and I think it will probably need a 5x5 lot (though this might be 6x6).

Anyway, a couple of pictures to whet your appetites.

    Carlton House (almost ready)

A couple more screenshots to hopefully make you drool excessively 9.gif

    carlton03ti.jpg

    carlton14jz.jpg

As you can see I have the textures sorted and the nightlights (all 360 of them) in place. This is going to go for it's final render later tonight so it should be exported by the time I get up tomorrow. One little question whihc I am 50/50 on. Do I need to add furniture? Remember that the model is already in excess of 500,000 polygons, so anything I now add will be minimal.

Anyways .. hope you lik, this should be on the STEX late tomorrow.

One thing that I think would help would be to enclose the penthouse patios. Perhaps with some wooden fencing to give the millionaire up there the feel of a backyard? I suggest this because it would be quite the sim who would pay the big bucks for the penthouse only to have mechanical roof equipment rumbling away and looking ugly right out his or her back door! I'm pretty sure that any developer worth their salt would have some enclosure to prevent that.

Oh and the light streamming out of the penthouse onto the patio is a tad bright. It took me a second to get that that white spot wasn't some kind of lounger, but was actually lighting! It really needs to be turned down a few notches.

Both of these points fall into the making an excellent BAT even better category 4.gif

Thanks spa, just the kind of feedback I was after. The light out of the penthouse doors will be sorted, as will somehind of wooden trellis to give the millionaire (that's me by the way ... I bagsie living there) a little privacy.

I have one thing to say to onlyplace4. You have got to be the fastest ST uploader ever! Your even out-uploading the great Simgoober! It almost seems like spam, if it wasn't for the quality and detail of your work. I absolotuely love your work! I have downloaded about 2/3 of your BATs (and still downloading), and I'm planning to make a Wild, West Mini CJ soon! I hope you get a Trixie.

    Sincerely,

    Eddie

EDIT: I would never have chosen a better place to make my 100th post on the ST, than in this thread. 44.gif

This is a very good building, nice to see something else than the western theme again. For furniture that would of course look more realistic, but I will use this anyway. I saw in Prepo's thread that he added "furniture" to his floor texture to save on modeling, maybe something you could consider?

wow, you really know what you are doing, so versatile in all of your creations. i love the mill and that new residential looks amazing. i can't wait for your complete guide to gmax and batting to learn something about how you do it all!!

i love your use of nightlighting. it is bright but i tend to like the exaggerations in the game. trying to be too realistic gets tedious, i prefer the slightly psychadelic and heavily saturated version of reality we get in simcity. furniture would be cool, i love looking into buildings that have been modelled inside. plants on the patios would be great too, i'm a huge fan of greenery on the tall residential buildings, especially ones with balconies and patios. can't wait to see the final version4.gif

great job! My only critique would be the lines on the roof. Are those heating things, or what? They are kinda repetitive, and draw attention away from the important part of the building: itself!

    Carlton House

Well, you've seen the previews, now you can download the finished article from the STEX right here.

    day.jpgnight.jpg

The final thing came out as a 6x6 lot even though the building itself would have fitted on a 5x5 lot. I did this so I could get the detail in around it. I hope you enjoy!

For the technically minded, the model consists of over 650,000 polygons, around 350 nightlights (though I will admit I lost count), and the final render ... well lets just say I'm glad I got those eight hours asleep!

@bewilder2 .. .I agree, but those are how the vent ducts were laid out on the concept building, so I decided to follow suit 9.gif

Thanks to everyone else for their encouragement a kind comments with regard to this project. More to follow 9.gif
