Too many people on the highway

Are you using NAM? Because there is a mod in that project that has the traffic set for 24 hours a day. I forget which name it was, but it was a radical mod.

Traffic cop is a must toadd capacity to your ground and above ground highways.

one highway in my main job city had the display cap # going into the city before i built my massive subway system. that main city, pine valley (medium map) has a total of 7 different city tile highway connections(the max i could do of its location). now my subway system is starting to become very congested as well as the buses so the number of cars on the highway is going up gradually and the commute time in those suburbs in going down.

If you have so many people taking cars on the highway, that's a failure of your mass transit system. IRL, highways are not made to move city populations. They couldn't even if you had triple deck highways. Have you seen the news report when the north-east US cities lost power? Entire bridges were flooded with nothing but people trying to walk home. They weren't even in cars, and the highways were still flooded. Highways are only capable of letting people take their own trips that aren't covered by mass transit, and for luxury.

Do what a real mayor does. Build mass transit. Big city subways can and do move hundreds of thousands of people each day. Busses takes tons of cars off the road. That's a huge relief for highways. Monorails are ultra high speed, capable of going the longest distance, and railways are dirt cheap. With each mass transit station you add, you take a few more people out of their cars and on to better modes of transportation.

The eastern US and old cities have relatively poor road systems. That's because many roads were established 10s of years ago, back to the early colonies. The buildings and people are far too ingrained, and it would cost tons of money to smash so much to improve the roads. In newer, more modern cities, you will see immense pre-planned roads, and I've heard of California superhighways as large as 14 lanes. You could build skyscrapers on that kind of pavement acreage. If you want your roads to carry that many people, you'll have to do the same. Unfortunately, SC4 doesn't have roads that large, and they can't be made very effectively. I don't know of any mods that will give you huge mega laned or modular roads, either, which is what big SC4 cities really need.

Increasing the highway capacities is cheating, IMO. Build more roads, or improve your mass transit. The best solution is to mix hi-density residential with hi-denisty commercial. They mix very well, and I strongly recommend it. The closer the sims are to their jobs, the less time they'll spend on the road.

Have you tried to put 3 highways next to each other? That way it will make the traffic lighter.

Yeah, that would help. I have 3 seperate highways running in a trench towards my CBD. There is nothing here yet, but once I get development up and running, these will come in handy.

When my traffic gets bad I start on mass transit in my cities, possibly TOO quickly. I micromanage my traffic.14.gif  I have never had traffic over 2000 on ANY of my highways, sadly.  There is a fine line between getting sims to go on the highway or giving them mass transit.  I have the NAM but not the traffic cop.  If you have a city over 400K peeps and you don't have at least some gridlock on your highways, it seems unrealistic.  Sometimes I just want to tear out all the subways to see what would happen.

texan, next time you're building a city, plan ahead and don't build all of your buildings next to each other without leaving much space between. This way you can build a lot of mass transit beneath the ground.

Even if you don't have enough space this way, build underground monorail like I did. It works perfectly.

For your current city: you've got enough citizens, why don't you demolish some buildings and build a mass transit on the newly created space?? 19.gif

you have a city of 700,000, you said?  Surely you've got a few abandoned/dipilidated buildings in there.  Tear them down and put bus stops and subways in their place.  Then tear down smaller buildings and put more bus stops and subways in their place.

If your highway goes over a span of water as a bridge, put ferries on the shores.  Lots of them.  One of my bridges had >50,000 people commuting.  Once I plopped ferries, it plummited to 3,000, and about 2,500 of those are busses.

This is a funny thread to read.. almost all the reply's suggest  adding a mod to make the problem go away. In other words if you have a problem, change the game you're playing..   1.gif

I mean the game is about planning, adjusting, revising, and accommodating.. I think your original response to the effect that I can't change it because I'll have to modify my city is just funny..

Have a good one, guys..

Ok, I have a question on highway capacity.

jxst1tm.jpg

65535 is alot I guess but it isn't the real number of traffic that is supposed to be there. I did some calculations, (I added 3.gif ) and the real number of cars that are supposed to be there is 85508. Is there a way for it to show me the actual traffic numbers? 65535 also show up in an avenue where there is supposed to be 105,000 cars

Is 65535 the default limit or something?

I barely ever even see a couple of cars on all of my roads in a city of 450,000. WHY?

@ b007---I've read somewhere in ST forums that the 65K number is the default max.

Well that's a ripoff. There has to be a way to edit that.

Someone has tried, but I believe it is hard coded into the game and is unable to be changed

65,535 is the biggest number that can be stored in an unsigned integer.  It most likely was assumed during development that 65,535 would be a sufficient cap for daily traffic on any given road.

Hey Dusk, thats a cool setup. I have done some experimenting in the past with my cities and I have noticed that if all 3 highways are connected at pretty much the same area the way yours are the commuters will take the same highway and it wont help the congestion. The only way I have really found to get away from congestion like that is to either have 3 non-connecting highways going to 3 different parts of your residential area, or have small commercial and industrial districts dispersed throughout the cities. The way you have your highways setup in that picture the 2 on the outside will have the most traffic and the one in the center will have little to no traffic. This seems to work the same for all types of mass transit systems aswell when playing inter-regional. Hopefully this information was helpful if you hadn't noticed it before.

Wow all this traffic, I swear after reading all this, I kept hearing the old Sim Copter 1 Reporting Heavy traffic! From the Classic SimCity! GOD I MISS THAT! 3.gif  I wish it was in SimCity 4! 3.gif

It is all a question of how you set your roads up, yes 65k is the default max display for a highway, but it is fairly rare to get there (and not exactly the best traffic management). Getting lots of people on a highway is done by useing feeders into your main job area, if you only have one highway from all your resedental fairly far away say another city block, your bound to have people on that highway no questions. 400k people isn't suffeciant unless they only have that one highway link, since the majority of those people are not working most of the time.

Standby.

The computer runs on binary, so 65536 would be 10000000000000000 in binary or 10000 in hex. Since there is a digit restriction (one digit less than that), it would then be 65535, or 111111111111111 in binary (or FFFF in hex). The computer displays 65535, but it thinks 111111111111111, and I can't go any higher.

i'll tell you something has anyone had the actual M25 in london now that s traffic 46.gif

i dont like the cloverleaf the other two lanes should be used so the right turn sould go under the other three lanes rather than a loop de loop
and where are six laned avenues and the MAJOR gridlock, upgrading the avenues to highways in the CBD dont help at all also there should be when ever you upgrade a road to an avenue even more people should use the avenue because they can
PS is there a patch to get all road to be one colour to street to road thing KILLSme

Heh, I hated that in SC2K but now I actually wish it was still in for some reason. Of course, the option to shoot it down should still be in as well.
