Too many people on the highway

Well i was playing simcity yesterday and i was watching my highway, the actual usage was 19563. what can i do lower it, there are too many people using it. its always like it. any suggestions? is there a mod that could fix it?

You could always try using mass transit. Put in subways, busses, monorails, trains...

well i tried to go there in mass transit but the city population is 786,120 and i cant just plop mass transits because of all the development would be destroyed.

In the Mod section, there's a road top mass transit mod.  You can use this to plop busses and subways (but, in the same way that you can't have a 1 tile wide growable next to a toll booth, you can't place one of these road-top mass transit stops next to one either, or it won't have a road connection and it will be abandoned).

With that many people using your highway, I hope you're taking a toll... that's some great revenue!!

See when i had toll booths, people were not coming even close to my highways but after i removed it, there are so many people on the highway. well thanx for telling me about the mod.

The tolls really have no impact on if people use or do not use the highways.  It doesn't affect travel time and it doesn't make them choose another route (if one is available).

In my cities, I have a mod that makes the tolls more expensive, and then I seclude my neighborhoods so that people are FORCED to use either the highway (and pay tolls) or mass transit (and pay the fares). 

Of course, though, if you add the mass transit, you will get fares, and especially if a good portion of your 700,000 people use them, then it will be a nice chunk of change.

One key to mass transit, though, is to make sure that you place it so that people will use it... place it near where they live and near where they will want to go (such as an industrial park or commercial downtown).  If you just place 2 or 3 bus stops, chances are that the sims won't use it, because it doesn't go enough places.

Can you post a picture of your packed highways?  I wouldn't mind seeing 20000 people use one highway!!!

I have gotten my highways up to 50,000.  And I have quite a few with 30,000.  I don't think that you have anything to worry about.  Actually, aren't there mods to increase traffic?  I dunno, though, I am no expert.

I don't know about mods that increase traffic, persay... but I do know that within the game itself, you can have the game create more cars/sims, etc.  Is that what you're talking about?

One of my freewways has 80,000+ people on it, going one way...

The best thing to do is to raise the capacity via traffic cop, or otherwise.

The most I get on a highway is what... 2,000 each commute? I would love to boost the traffic on my highways. It's realistic! But I don't want to go too far. 20,000 people on one highway in Sc4 is crazy !

well thanx guys. i will try to get a pic with a lot people using the highway. My ferries do get a quite a number of people but thats the only mass transit system I have. And also when i thought i had about 20000 people on a highway was high but u guys have alot more than me. And oh yah, the toll booths do get my sims away from using the highways, i was just experimenting it but the people just stop using the highway so i had to take the booths out.

i could never get my sims to use highways, the most ill get is about 1.5k cars. On the other hand i do hav elike 5 or 6 ferry terminals that serve upwards of 60k pple, in a region of 950k pple

I think its good to have that much on a highway. The most i ever got in the region is 6k.

That's interesting that the cars go away from the highway, based on the toll-booth.... I've always heard that they don't make a difference, and I've always had that be the case, as well.

I think by default the highway capacity is 7000 after that it will be shown in red being very congested. I have had highways with over 150k using them. The route quary is limited to 65k the only other true way to tell how many is using it is a tollboth.
