    WELCOME TO PAGE 3.

Yes, I know what you're thinking, *another* regional, but this time I've finished the motorways and marked 'em on the map. (you'll have to actually click on the thumbnail to see it properly 3.gif)

Meanwhile, the region population's almost 100,000. There'll be an update on it. Next time, I'll remember to sharpen the image... *sigh*

Like your seaports, and railway setting. 29.gif
It's unfortunate though some of your pics don't show on my pc, all I can see is the broken link icon... 47.gif

But for what I can see it still looking great! 44.gif

Whoops sorry bout that. Wrong thread. lol.

Thanks for the comments. Darmok: sorry to hear about you not being able to see some of the images. Unfortunately, I'm at the whims of ImageShack - if any of their servers goes down, you don't see some/all of my pics. It's annoying, but it's beyond my control.

Good to know you're still enjoying the CJ though.

That is a very nice trans map of your region. You have given me the idea to include route numbers on my trans maps now37.gif. I'm amazed that New Zealand adapted the MABC system Victoria (my state) uses. M for freeways, A for intercity highways, B for Intertown Highways & Tourist Routes & C for linking all the little towns scattered everywhere together. Keep it up4.gif

Yea, the trees look a lot better from when I first commented on them.  The park area looks more natural now.  Love seeing your city develop.

They're bringing it in nationally. Within a few years it'll be present in Sydney. They've been culling many of the state routes, and most of signs on those routes are new and coverplated. This signage is apparently being installed in the Cross-city tunnel, and there's speculation the changeover will start when they open the new M7 motorway (it kinda chucks a spanner in the works with regard to the Metroad system).

Hence the M1 will become the M1/A1, the M4 the M4, M5 I'm not sure whether it'll be 5 or 31). The freeways currently known to the people as the F3 and F6 will probably both receive the title of M1 (there may be a North/South distinction here). The M2 will be the M2.

Introducing the Metroad system seems to have been an intermediate step. Get people used to the idea of 'M' Roads.

The technical definition of these roads (I'm gonna get boring here, bear with me) is as such. Victoria has been somewhat more loose in applying them. The RTA is (I think) going to be sticking with them pretty much TO THE LETTER.

And NZ is moving over to it? didn't know that. Makes sense though.

    METROMANUKAU MODIFIES TENDER

In an unexpected turn, Manukau's Suburban Railway operator, MetroManukau, has changed its tender. Instead of going for the model previously shown, the operator has opted for a tried and trusted. The new trains will be similar in many ways to current rollingstock, and will be constructed by the same firm. The deal was struck at the last minute when Newbury operator NewTrans also elected to retire its current stock. In a bid to bring down costs, the two operators elected to order the same basic design, the only point of difference being the chosen liveries.

The train design is similar to Atlanta's Marta trains, with the exception of having two doors each side only.

MetroManukau today displayed its new livery:

    martaside14xo.jpg width=256 alt=Image Ho

    ==============
    The Real Story:

I changed the design after doing a test run in FiSHMan. Pretty intuitive program... It hit me that these colours work really well on this train.

I just need to work out how on earth I apply the textures to the actual train. If anyone knows how to do it (preferably in DatGen, the Reader takes centuries to load files on this computer...)

    Introducing... Essendon

    essendoncentre5xh.jpg width=800 alt=Imag
Essendon's heart. Not much to look at now...

It's not the most pretty place in the region, but it's certainly on the up and up. Middle-class residents have been moving out here in droves in recent times.

Essendon is the hub of Essendon City Council (though their city hall hasn't been built yet...) and is also intended to be one of the region's Employment Centres.

    essendonatnight9vo.jpg width=800 alt=Ima
    The Essendon Headland at night.

As far as being a place to live though, Essendon does well.

    essendonsouth0le.jpg width=800 alt=Image

    In other news....

METROMANUKAU'S NEW TRAIN SEEN ON LINE
    newtrain5ji.jpg width=800 alt=Image Host

Today in Essendon, it appears that MetroManukau were testing their newest train, which has been dubbed the yellow and purple monster. Not that it's bad. The train was managing quite impressive speeds on the Essendon Mainline today.

It is understood that it would not be operating at these speeds through most of the network. It is, believed that the extra speed will be used on the interurban service to Bilinga, and also express services to the new airport.

A spokesman from the operator said We are quite happy with the tests so far. The train is proving to be quite a machine.

I'll be a bit all over the place this time.

    Getting back to the CBD

    cbd10si.th.jpg alt=Free Image Hosting at
The city's newest office tower, the Coca-Cola Building, pierces the sky

It wasn't expected, and was thought to be a joke when the Development application came in. But as it turned out, Coca-Cola had every intention of moving it's national headquarters here.

It's the most logical move we could make, head of Newtonian Coke division James Suttor explained. The city is strategically positioned at the heart of the nation. For a company like ours which is largely based on distributing a product, it makes sense to centralise everything, including our marketing and management.

With the region's population approaching 120,000 and growing fast, the national administration couldn't be happier.

    ==========================

    marlinpoint3cu.jpg width=800 alt=Image H
    The Marlin Point District.

The Manukau City Council is quite proud of this district (apologies about the water, I was experimenting. That colour has since been ditched). This area's prime real estate, dominated by dense rowhomes and a few blocks of units. There isn't much low-wealth around here, and for good reason. These people have views to the skyline, Manukau Bridge, Central Harbour, and they're close to the city's only baseball stadium (visible).

    =====================
    Elizabeth and Surrounds

    elizabeth4vu.jpg width=800 alt=Image Hos
Central Elizabeth. Note the railway station and town centre

This is Elizabeth, another of the regions employment centres. By the time you get out here, you're well and truly within the domain that will be the sprawl.

Elizabeth is a fairly nice place to live - the town of Elizbeth is presently seperate from the chain of cities that make up the Manukau Metropolitan area. It is, however, intended that this area will be swallowed by the growing metropolis.

    elizabethpublic9yt.jpg width=480 alt=Ima
Elizabeth Public School, complete with its sporting fields. There is also a high school not far away which also uses these same fields.

With education being such an important part of Newtonia's existence, it's no surprise that even in Elizabeth the government hasn't been slow in constructing new educational facilities.

    In nearby Elizabeth Hills...

    elizabethhills6pu.jpg width=800 alt=Imag
Elizabeth Hills area, with main features marked

...not much happens. All you will ever get here is a huddle of houses, and (eventually) alot of traffic. This doesn't mean however that Elizabeth Hills has no importance, in fact, quite the opposite. Elizabeth Hills is home to the extremely exit to the A37. It's an important exit.

This sign is located 500m before the exit and it should be fairly clear upon reading it just how important this exit is.

I've been reworking the Embassy district, and it's come out top notch. The district is now pretty much complete, although I am yet to replace the Arab Building (I accidentally demolished it. Will rebuild soon. Might do a paper on it.)

    embassydistrict24eg.jpg width=800 alt=Im
Present boundary of the Embassy district. The boundary will be expanded slightly when the Arab Building is rebuilt.

The suburb has been officially named Carlingford, the name of the former capital which was somewhat unexpectedly destroyed (I will mention this no more as it is irrelevant to this journal).

Taking up a significant chunk of the Embassy district is Embassy Park (below)

    embassypark18yy.jpg width=800 alt=Image
Embassy Park. Note the spread of toilets.

Embassy Park has only recently opened to the public and has been a runaway success, although it's quite empty on this particular day...

Also of note here is the small rowhome area at the bottom left of the above image. It's hoped that the area will become dominated by structures like this.

    embassypark27hh.jpg width=800 alt=Image

And here's the night shot (above).

    ===============
EXPANSIONARY PLANS FOR CITY OF MANUKAU

The State Government has announced ambitious expansion plans for the city. The place needs to grow, said the Minister for Planning and Roads, Jaques Manwood. We have the freeways in place, now it's time to build out. Of course, we'll be densifying the core as well.

All this means the city will be a whole lot bigger. Some citizens are worried though. We don't want our fine city to become sprawl central, says Max Plan, head of the Not another LA group. We don't want this city, as capital of our nation, to become a carbon-copy of Los Angeles.

The Federal Government has yet to finalise the plans, but the first release of the plan has already been made.

    northembassypark6on.jpg width=800 alt=Im
Carlingford Park, newest of the Manukau suburbs

Carlingford Park, a new suburb near the embassy district was released 3 months ago and is becoming quite popular. Most of the suburb is yet to be developed but the signs are promising explained the CEO of LandCom George Mawson. We expect the release to be filled fairly quickly.

The government has also decided that this suburb will be used as a model for the suburban expansion. So take a good look everyone - this is the way our city's headed.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't stopped working on this region. I've got population (regional) up to 140,000, and I'm starting the (long) process of sprawling the city out. Here's a (transport) region view of the main area:

Essendon Harbour. Note the underground rail station.

Essendon Harbour is one of the more dense parts of the city. It's currently becoming more of a medium-wealth suburb, but it's no less dense.

Essendon Harbour is a popular suburb, being close to the employment centre of Essendon and also the new airport (which, whilst not yet open, is almost complete:

    thia8da.jpg width=800 alt=Image Hosted b

With the airport nearing completion, the official name of the new airport has been released: Twin Harbour International Airport (Or THIA). Full update on this soon.

Meanwhile, the Essendon area continues to grow. the Merewether release has been very successful.

Just read my way through this entire Cj.

Its really very good, You have urban sprawl down to a T, and the way the surburbs blend seemlessly is very lifelike.

I will certainly be following this CJ, if only to see where you go from here...

Yeah. I figured that, though it certainly wouldn't hurt for them to switch over... I would like to point out here to everyone that this is not meant to be an accurate (or even any) representation of the city of Auckland (you probably already knew that though ded.
