Inaugurating W for the second time has got to be more like a security disaster. I hope nothing happens to W, the alternate doesn't give me anything but chills.

@J.O.: You're welcome. I drop into the old joint on a daily basis, but it is more moribund than ever. The newbies start there, but soon find their way over here. If I don't send them, then Gary234 does. Ralphael keeps the place going from a moderator perspective, and now has a set of volunteers who are trying to clean up the mess on the lot exchange. I think it is a futile gesture unless they make that an adjudicated section. It is too easy for little egos to copy something and upload it there to see if it works. Of course, they leave it there so they can preen their feathers.

About having a Chat: I dislike chats intensely, and would not participate. If you want one, go ahead, but count me out.

@Vid: Actually, it was the bus company that wimped out in Simcoe. The only school that was closed was Timothy Christian because all their students are bused. When I was teaching at Georgian, it only closed when there were whiteouts on the highways and streets during a blizzard, and one time when the power was out. Simcoe county is largely rural but has some major cities in it, notably Barrie. Barrie has good transit, so if the buses die, some kids take transit. If the transit isn't running, then ... The schools don't close unless there is a police disaster that closes roads. Now the boards south of us may have a problem, but we are used to a little winter weather. The worst problem we have around here is the loose nuts holding the steering wheels on cars doing 100kph on the 400 when you can't see two car lengths. This highway also has some bridges that produce black ice on a regular basis.

Whew!!!... Hey John, thanks for asking about the arrangements in D.C. ...  Security is obviously tight, but candidly as someone who works nearby but is not actually a part of the event, it doesn't seem that much more different than other post 9/11 events including President Reagan's funeral  and assorted (or sordid?) marches and whatnot.  Federal and District workers have the day off tomorrow and supposedly got off today at 12noon.  What most of us are concerned about is getting home safely in already notorious long & difficult traffic conditions.  Regardless of whatever else goes on, that's always the crux around this place for workaday folks...

 

The metro area got it's first measurable snow fall of the season.  I'd say about 1-2 inches.  Probably not much of a big deal elsewhere; I thought I remember being used to it in Indiana.  But here as always it makes for miserable traffic conditions. You add to that government employees getting off at the same time of the day, regardless of what time it is and it makes for a long rush hour.  I live about 20 miles fr work and average a 45 minute commute one way.  Today it took me close to 3 1/2 hours even before picking up children from school.  Even though I only worked half a day I am still worn & exhausted. It was bad enough that my congregation called off Wed. night Bible study, which doesn't happen that often.  Hopefully the snow will stick long enough for me to play in in with my children.

 

I appreciate your feelings about chat.  Chat has grown on me, but sometimes chat can go real slow, esp. if participants have other windows open or chat can go super fast to a dizzying pace if you have a lot participants in it engaging in multiple conversations... -actually that can be a lot of fun!   

 

The thing about BBS's is that a person can take his or her time and reflect in writing, creating, and responding back to posts.

Did I hear you say it snowed in D.C.?  LOL!!  Yeah, I saw it on the news here in Chicago, too.  (I work for a TV station, so I get my news and weather that way instead of reading a newspaper.)  LOL!!

 

Me and the Ol' Lady lived in The District from '84-'85, and I remember how it was IF (big IF here) it snowed, southerners don't know how to drive in the snow, sorry, but true.  nothing personal, present company excepted.  And now you got the Innauguration on top of that? LOL!!!

Dude, you don't happen to have a pool table here, do you?  I Know the Llama steaks are totally Fat free, in fact, they probly reduce fat just by eating them, but if I'm going to have another Guinness, and I think I will, I need a little Activity to work it off, if you know what I mean.  Besides, I like to think about Geometry some times.

The weather around here has been insane as of late. Ovger the weekend, we had frozen rain accumulating on the ground, and the ski areas were getting a generous amount of snow, then on Monday it began raining on a near monsoon scale, and Tuesday, it continued pouring, and temperatures reached 60 degrees F, record highs! Can't wait to see what's next. A blizzard, perhaps?

@ The_Dalai_Llama:  Picking up the glassware, drops a plate of mixed nibbles. You're at Penn State?  Can be quite chilly this time of year.  I've never been on that campus.  Is it spread out?  In most disciplines, a school has related buildings close together.

This week has been one of those cold weeks.  Temperatures in the teens and a nice, strong breeze can really freeze up those unprotected ear lobes.  Maybe I'm just spoiled because it was in the 50s last week.

Luckily, most of my classes are close together so I only experience the outdoors for just a couple of minutes at a time.  Still, it's not a small campus by any standard.  I've walked from one end to the other one day and that took about 30-40 minutes.

Glad to meet you too! Pls excuse my cold hand from my iced drink.  (and I'll excuse the steak juice!)  I'm a fellow midwesterner too!  From Indiana, and I have exactly the same problems with the driving over here.  Sometimes folkses confuse my rural twang for a southern drawl but I'd like to think that there's no confusion once behind the wheel.  (not that I'm bragging -it's that their driving is that terrible!)  And the thing is that even though this area is south of the Mason-Dixon Line, it actually does get all four seasons and has so many people that have come here from somewhere else including folkses I thought were used to a little snow and rain.  Oh Well.

 

I've seen a few plays at the Arena Stage and had some nice meals over at the wharf area on Maine Street.  My wife and I like to go to Phillips.  It's also not too far from where my agency is located.  I'm not really in the business as of yet, but in the past couple of years I've been doing just a teeny bit of industrial work on the side.  Mostly role playing for companies that want to train their employees and some nonpaid extra work. I want to see if I have any talent before pushing anything yet and industrial, when I can schedule it in the the evenings, seems to be a safe way to make a little money w/out endangering my full-time job. 

 

Annnyway welcome to the BBS.  Over time, just like so many others here, you might discovered that involvement in the ST community is just as much addictive as the game itself!

::Steps up to the bar and grabs a stool:: How is everything going? I see we're back online and I am no longer so busy, so how about a Mountain Dew Pitch Black.

My school schedule is just interesting. On Mondays and Wednesdays I have a class that ends at 9:45 and the next one is not until 1:30. It is nice, though, because I can easily get all my reading done and can go to the computer lab and surf. I don't have school tomorrow, and I plan to go skiing in the evening. We are slated to get 4-8 of snow, which would be great for skiing and for the sake of winter in general. We got another inch today and you finally cannot see the tops of the mowed blades of grass. 8 is enough where we have to snowblow! it has been so long.

Our eldest cat is very sick, and we have no idea what is wrong with her. She won't eat, is very crabby, and has been mewing very loudly. She also smacks her lips after drinking water, and it is a good thing that she is drinking water. She had been spending a lot of time staring at the water dish, then tried to climb into it. I put a little bit of water in a bin that is large enough for her and she has been laying in that for the past few hours. I will call the vet tomorrow.

I am very sorry to hear about your cat. It may be time for her to go to the Rainbow Bridge outside Valhalla to await your coming. About 15 years ago, we had a similar incident with our cat. It turned out to be inoperable cancer of the esophagus. She was starving, and was closing even more so she was having a hard time drinking. I sympathize, but it is better for her to go now than later if that is the case.

We have 4 of new snow so far, and we might double that by the end of the night. I had to drive down into the St. Croix valley, across the river, then back out, which is not fun on the 9% grade. The reason I went there is because I was bringing Fancy to the vet. She was having kidney failure, and the vet did not believe she would make it. We had her put down and she will be cremated. She was a calico barn cat that was polydactyl; she had six toes on three of her feet and seven on the other. She was born in spring 1996.



This is our other cat. His name was Sylvia, until we figured out he was male and changed it to Sylvester. He is about sixteen months old. This is one of my favorite pictures.

Thanks for the concern about my health.  Sometimes RLS (real-life syndrome) spills into the cyber-world. Fortunately the cyberpersonality I cultivated allows for some flexibility to let me be more of self here. In real life I have responsibilities that require a Type-A response though I'm kind of laid back, or at least nonconfrontational, by nature. I've been assured that didn't cause any health problems.
