The Current State of the American Health Care System
SeventhSeal17 replied to Psycho_Teddy's topic in Current Events
Originally posted by: hym Originally posted by: beebs Originally posted by: hym Many of the countries that have universal healthcare also have relatively high population densities, which the US does not. Population density is a major factor in determining the financial feasibility of public services and can easily make or break the ability of a government to fund a public service. Europe, Canada, Japan, and other countries have fairly high population densities. This allows them to exploit economy of scale by building fewer hospitals. quote> Canada in fact is much less dense than the US. We only have around 3 people / sq. km, while the US has somewhere around 30. quote> Canada technically has a lower population density than does the United States. However, this is fairly meaningless in light of the fact that Canada has enormous swaths of territory with no inhabitants (or none to speak of). The majority of Canada is effecively uninhabited, while the reverse is true in the US (ignoring Alaska and Hawaii because of their geographic locations). According to Canada's 2006 census, 8 Canadian cities have 500,000 inhabitants or more living inside the official city limits. Together, these cities represent nearly 8.6 million Canadians, or roughly 27% of the population, cover a combined area of 2,336.68 square miles, and have an average population density of 3,674.09 people per square mile. However, most census experts agree that the real way to look at a city is to look at its metropolitan area. The Canadian census recognizes 11 metropolitan areas with populations over 500,000 individuals. Together, these 11 metropolitan areas account 16.2 million Canadians, or roughly 51% of the Canadian population. These metropolitan areas encompass a combined 17,010.3 square miles, giving a population density of 953.15 people per square mile. Now let's compare this information with comparable US scenarios. The 2000 US census lists 34 cities as have a population of over 500,000 in the official city limits. Together, those cities are home to 40,743,164 Americans, have a total area of 10,066.09 square miles, and a population density of 4,047.57 people per square mile. This represents only 14.5% of the US population. The American census lists 81 metropolitan areas with populations of 500,000 or more. These 81 areas house 183,657,168 Americans, have a combined area of 429,591.17 square miles, and a population density of 427.52 people per square mile. This condition represents 65.3% of the US population. In summary, Canadians do indeed live much more close together than do Americans. Canada's statistics indicate that 51% of it citizens live in a metropolitan area with an average density of 953.15 people per square mile, while the latest US census suggests that nearly two thirds of Americans live in a metropolitan area with a population density that is less than half the density of their Canadian counterparts. quote> that is one of the most pedantic things I've ever read. by the way, what use are statistics? I've lived in Boston and New York in the States and Warsaw in Poland. I lived way closer to the Americans than the Polish. So you don't include the unihabitated places in Canda but you do in the US? I'm sure all the 7 people that live in Wyoming are thankful for that. -

I live in Boston, so everytime you leave city limits you pratically get bombarded by McMansions. Concord and Lexington anyone? -
The worst building in the world

I for one have an intense dislike for Taipei 101. Can't stand looking at that damn thing. -
Your thoughts: Tallest Building
SeventhSeal17 replied to jmjselect's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
The worlds tallest is current Taipei 101 in, you guessed it, Taipei, Taiwan. Personally I think that it is a, for lack of a better word, stupid building built in the wrong district of a not yet world class city. It is not even near downtown Taipei area, which according to the developers (C.Y. and Lee) was to spark a new skyline away from the over developed downtown area. Well, that remains to be seen, -

most time spent in one day on a video game
SeventhSeal17 replied to hyped_up_boy's topic in Gaming Talk
About three years ago when I was very sick (think throwing up your lungs and I was sicker than that) I started playing whatever the current Final Fantasy game was at the time (FFX I think) for about 15 hours. Well, 12 hours, because 3 of those 15 were spent with my head in the toilet if you know what I'm saying. -
Try living in Boston. With the Big Dig going on roads are constantly being re-routed/closed, most of the time unannounced, leaving you with a detour through the entire North End (if you are familiar with the Boston Area you will know that this is a huge delay and quite annoying) and adds a good hour to your ten minute trip. I'm aggravated just thinking about it.

You can take my answer with a grain of salt because if you asked me one hour from now I am sure the answer would be diffrent, maybe entirely. So without further ado: Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Metallica - Master of Puppets In Flames - The Jester Race Black Sabbath - Masters of Reality Opeth - Blackwater Park
