I like Chesterfield very much and think it is a great suburb in St. Louis, yet I have my doubts in some of the things you said. St. Louis will never reach 2 million unless it finally gets permission to annex past the cities 61 sq. miles. Chesterfield even today is not the richest Missouri suburb, maybe later on but not yet. It still is surpassed by cities like Ladue, and Clayton, MO. Chesterfield even with 100,000 people would not be the largest suburb. Independence, MO, suburb to KC has over 112,000 people. Chesterfield since the year 2000 has seen less and less growth of neighborhoods and living. The most recent estimated population growth is around 58,000 which is still smaller than the estimated population for O'Fallon-76,000, St. Charles 68,000 and St. Peters 66,000. Wildwood, which is more than twice the size of Chesterfield, and bigger than the city of St. Louis, will probably rank among one of the larger cities and wealthier. It currently has around 40,000 and seems to be growing and filling in its over 70 sq. miles. I don't dislike Chesterfield at all. I think it is probably the nicest suburb of St. Louis, not the richest, but nicest for its size and enjoy driving through it. I still have my doubts though on it being able to compete with the growth of St. Charles County cities. Wentzville, MO, had around 7,000 people in 2000 and is already approaching well over 20,000 people.

By 2050, St. Louis will have a little over 700,000 people and the metropolitan will have close to 5 million. Suburbs will finally have grown into Illinois turning into another St. Charles County.

USA- will remain the a World Super Power, and still continue being stronger than China. Sorry but China nor the rest of the world will ever be able to compete with the US when it comes to Military. Were way ahead as it is and it's not going to stop.

Canada- See further faster growth. The exchange between Canadians moving to America and Americans moving to Canada will not change. Canada's population will grow mostly from immigrants and its economy will continue to grow. The US and Canada will join together with there own currency and work more closely together.

Europe- Decrease in population will continue and continued criticism against the U.S. will not change. The USA will rely less and less on europe for trade and military alliances forcing Europe to think they are still a big part fo the world yet they won't be.

China- Reach around 1.5 billion before it finally slows down. They will work closer with the US trying to keep peace among the world. Although they will increase their military strength, it will still be nothing like the USA's. China will participate among more world events and will help its neighboring countries grow and develop.

The birth rate will slow and population will stabilize, resulting in population loss in places that are undesirable

Cities that can provide an "urban" lifestyle will be hot, and cities whose centers are terminally decayed will not

Alternative fuels and plastic derived from organic matter will replace petroleum. However, this will not be cheap. A significantly higher cost of living will result and lower the amount of disposable income americans have. Things like houses will be smaller, and expensive things and services will be more commoditized.

Just some predictions of the world in general:

- China will become a world economic/military power on par with the U.S. and E.U. < (economically speaking).

- Fossil fuels will be for the most part gone with alternatives such as hydrogen and ethanol being used as well as nuclear for power plants.

- Quebec will become its own nation.

- Sea levels rise marginaly around 5-10 feet as a result of Global Warming, prompting low lying cities such as New York to build flood control systems.

- Rising sea surface temperatures lead to increased hurricane activity in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. This will have resulted in several occurences of Katrina level hurricanes striking many major coastal cities such as Miami, Hong Kong, Jaksonville, Houston/Galveston area etc. A major hurricane of around Category 3 strength will strick somewhere from Balimore to New York and Long Island, resulting in severe damage and economic loss.

- Air travel will decline in all areas except for long distance flights (over 2000 miles) and will be replaced by high speed rail (Maglev) in Asia/North and South America/Australia (high speed rail is already dominate in Europe).

- Personal aircraft (flying cars) will exsist but will not be accessible yet to the average middle income citizens.

- China's economy while strong will slow in growth as more people there enter the middle class which will result in less manufacturing and more service industries (similar to how the U.S. has shifted in the last century from relying predominatly on manufacturing industries to service industries).

- India becomes the new China in terms of manufacturing and experiences huge economic growth.

- Many African nations become more industrialized though still not on par with Europe, North American or Asian countries.

- A super highway (think Trans Texas Corridor style) will be built connecting all of the nations in North and South America leading to much economic growth in Latin America.

- A world war centered around the Middle-East occurs between 2010 and 2025 leaving the region democricized (I made that up). The war leads to a world wide economic recession as much of the world's oil is in the war zone. China shows its military power during the war. Nukes are not used, but are threatened.

- A global economic depression will occur.

- A cure for AIDS will not be discovered, but a new method to immunize people will greatly decrease its spreading.

- Cloning of animals will become an industrial process (to make food), though human cloning while possible, will not be widely attempted.

- A new space race will occure between the US and China as both attempt colonization of the moon, and landing on Mars.

- Dubai becomes the world tourism center and richest city.

- The world's tallest building will be built in Tokyo

U.S.

- A high speed rail system (again likely Maglev) will be built under a similiar plan as Eisenhower's interstate program.

- Economicaly will remain as one of the 3 major powers including China and the European Union.

- Sprawl will overtake many regions including the North East, Florida, Texas, the South West, and much of the Mid West. Measures to stop sprawl fail, though stricter planning is required.

- Following the lead of the Trans Texas Corridor (which is extended up through Toronto), many super highways (with rail) are built including one on the East and West Coasts, and one running from East to West connecting Jacksonville to Los Angelas. They are toll highways, though funded by both the government and private sectors. Autobahn level quality allows vehicles to travel safetly at 100 mph, causing them to become popular.

- English becomes the offical language, though Spanish becomes a semi-official language in areas with large Spanish speaking populations.

- The health care system becomes socialized in a similiar fashion to Canada's.

- Improved temporary worker programs and citizenship processe lead to a decline in illegal immigration.

- The South East becomes much more arid.

- Los Angelas and New York enter a new skyscraper race, though neither feature the tallest building in the world.

- The country becomes overall more liberal including the Republican Party.

- Remains militarily active in the Middle East, following the World War which many blame on the initial War in Iraq.

- Proposes an American Union (between the nations of North and South America) in order to remain competitive with Europe and Asia. The dollar is adopted as the offical currency, which strengthens its value.

One final prediciton, the City Life franchise has replaced the (at this point) long dead Sim City franchise as the predominate city builidng sim 2.gif.  Simtropolis v.26.0 remains the main community fansite.

Although a few of you have considered the coming oil crisis. Not many have really considered how much of an effect it will have.

By 2050:

- Oil prices will have risen to a level where it is no longer practical to burn it for energy, or for ordinary people to use it to power their cars.

- The US will have either turned the entire Middle-East into a war zone in order to secure the remaining oil, OR the US economy will have collapsed entirely and the country will be in chaos.

- Either way, conditions within the US will have changed dramatically. The country will be bankrupt. There will be massive unemployment. The rich folk may live lives similar to ours but the poor will be more like the poor in South America now.

- Russia will remain a superpower, thanks to its massive oil reserves.

- China will not overtake Russia or the EU as a world superpower, mainly due to its reliance on oil.

- The EU will suffer a recession due to falling US economy, but will bounce back thanks to use of nuclear power, coal reserves, and its substantial, electrically-powered mass-transit system.

- The UK will suffer more than the rest of Western-Europe due to the closer involvement with the US and the oil trade.

- In order to stabilise the falling economy, the UK will join the Euro. This will work, and the UK will become a full member of the EU, but it will no longer be a major power in Europe, having been overtaken by France and Germany.

- Some Eastern European nations will struggle to cope with their oil dependency and be reabsorbed by Russia again.

- Japan will continue to be a leader in technology. It's economy will suffer slightly from the reduced trade with the US, but this will be slowly replaced by trade with Russia.

- Most of Africa will continue to be in poverty, suffering food shortages and droughts as more areas turn to desert.

- Canada will follow the US into recession.

- South America will suffer from interference by the US to secure oil and sanctions by the EU to try and secure the rainforests.

- Cheap air travel will cease entirely. Air travel will only be available to be very rich, large businesses, governments, and militaries. People will get used to it.

- People will also get used to not having out-of-season fruit and veg, cheap consumer items from China, and cheap clothes from third-world sweatshops.

- Although hydrogen and ethanol powered vehicles will slowly come into use, they will be expensive. Electric cars may be used for short journeys. Public transport will become much more important.

- In Europe, for the first time in over a century, some roads will be torn up to make way for more railways.

- Overall government, especially the US, will become more authoritarian, although as some areas regain prosperity, they will move back towards more liberal ideas.

- Global warming will actually remain at similar levels to today, as oil usage decreases. Unfortunately coal usage will increase so no overall improvement will be seen.

- Religious extremism will increase, especially in the Middle-East and US. As the situation in the US deteriorates, Christian terrorist groups will emerge. They will clash with Muslim groups from the Middle-East, but both will also bomb targets in the more wealthy, secular nations of the EU, Russia, and Japan.

- The ITER nuclear fusion reactor will prove successful in generating more energy than it consumes, and the construction of the first commercial fusion plants will have begun in France and Japan.

- In the summer of 2050 drought and heat-waves cause thousands of deaths across the southern US. A huge music concert called R

In 2050. The world will be a total different place. The world population is aproching the 10B. Everything is going bad nations are overcrowded and every year we will see the genoside of thousands of people. the world power as swich to Asia. 40% of the planet is Asian and the low birth rate of caucasean people have almost exterminate the race. North-America is in an economic depression and falling back technologically. Asia is buying 70% of the world food production to satisfy their needs. Every year the sea level rise 2 feet million of refugies try to evacuate europe and North Americans are fleeing to the high lands.

countries are surrounded by digs to stop the sea waters from coming in. But useless many great cities like New York, Tokyo, Bejing have seen their digs become to high to big and collapse killing millions of innocent victims.

There are hurricanes all year long and the Carabeans have been evacuated those who stayed were killed by the incredible force of hurricane. Some regions live intense drough other intense floods.

The boreal forest have burn or has been bombed during WWIII and the Amazon have been cut down during the economic boom of 2020. Oxygen is rare in the atmosphere and researchers are developing respiratory system for when people go outdoors.

The average density per citizen in most countries is 1,000 and main cities is 20,000. The United-states have Bankruped and sold 40% of its territory to China to pay back its dept.

There is still oil for at least 20 years. but anyway this is what they said 50 years and people are still driving cars to work. 80% of the cars are korean and the American and Japanese car industry have crashed 10 years prior at the beggining of the depression.

Ok so this is the dark side and I don't feel like making a good side so I'm gonna let you on that

Predictions for the year 2050

- New York and Tokyo are under the oceans due to global warming

- First long-term lunar colony established

- First space resort in orbit around the Earth

- India is the first nation to put a man on Mars

- Overpopulation becomes a serious problem

- America is destroyed by the idiots

- China almost becomes a world power but due to overpopulation problems, pollution problems, and government problems, it falls apart

- India successfully becomes a technological, economic, and political superpower

- Japan is also a strong and wealthy nation

- Europe collapses weeks after the fall of the US

- Africa develops greatly

- Dubai experiences an economic crisis when the world no longer depends on oil as a fuel

- Middle East is at war... with itself. Nations engage in a free-for-all type battle for supremacy. This war eventually leads to the fall of most nations in the Mid East. Israel, however survives and thrives, for now it has more lands than ever before.

- Canada falls slightly after US falls, but is back on its feet after 15 years

- First Extra-terrestrial contact made by a team of Japanese and Indian scientists. These aliens are super-intelligent beings from Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter. Trade is conducted on a regular basis. Also, Earthling tourists visit Europa as Europan tourists visit Earth. Not only that, but the world science has greatly advanced from this contact. Experiments are conducted and knowledge is shared between races.

Some of these ideas are realistic and others are not so much (especially that last one).

My new predictions:

- Growth over earth will slow down, as oil reserves dry up.

- Trains and bikes will become the major forms of transport.

- Sprawl will cease, and cities will get denser.

- SUVs will stop being used as they are gas guzzlers.

- Terrorism threats in Britain and the US become an everyday thing.

- The situation in the Middle East will have finally fizzled out after a second Gulf War.

- China and India will lose out on their growth thanks to the west's greed for oil.

Just a few...

I usually like to think optimistically about this.

BY 2050, the world wouldnt be dependant on oil anymore, making it less useful because bottled water was canceled and humans discovered a new form of material better than plastic.

People will fly to work, including mass transit, (ground vehicles still in use though)

The Rainforests are saved and global warming comes to a slow down(or even a hault)

Cities becomemore populated and people move less, there fore, superscrapers are in use.

A Global Highway is completed along with a floating tunnel through the Atlantic connecting America and Europe.

Energy sources such as Solar Energy, Fission Technology, etc. are in use as main power suppliers.

World Peace.....................is never immenent.

The Antichrist has been defeated(in a religious matter)

Al Quaida is diminished......... so long as terrorism isnt a word 2.gif

Economy sturggles are sorted out.

The US has finished a second Civil War, therefore Revolutionizing its ways once more as they did back inthe 17 and 1800's.

The list goes on for me.

I believe that by the year 2050 (and Goldman-Sachs  -world’s leading investment group seem to agree) world would be more prosperous and overall better place than it is today. Spectacular economic growth will bring billions out of abject poverty they’re suffering today.
China will be world’s biggest economy US will be second.
EU wouldn’t go much farther compared where it stands today. Politically anyway. Economic integration will spark cultural nationalism (as it does already) and all the petty feuds and differences all across the union preventing it ever becoming real superpower. While competition nearby and across the world will be reasserting themselves.
Russia will become Europe’s largest (by far) economy with GDP per capita exceeding that of Germany (actually this is suggestion in Goldman Sachs study) with population stabilized at about 140 million. And will compete for the title of World 5th largest economy with Brazil. First four are China, US, India and Japan.
Neither Russia no China will become democracies in true western term of the word and remain somewhat authoritarian and strongly capitalistic states. Although much more relaxed than ever before. Stability of the society would be national mantras in both. And societies will be bribed by remarkable economic progress and constantly frighten by the images of instability from Africa and parts of Middle East.
To oppose some criticism from the west and to assert their role in the world Russia and China would take Shanghai Organization for Cooperation to the new level although still not as tightly integrated as EU but with significant military component.
India will play between Shanghai group and US keeping itself as sort of non-allied nation.
All that said but strong common interest among all developed nations will keep them very close together and significantly minimize internal disputes.
World reliance on oil as fuel will be significantly reduced, but not eliminated as more and more oil deposits are found and new technology is invented that allow for its extraction form more difficult locations – like on oceanbed of Arctica and Antarctica as well from those oily sands deposits in Canada. Remaining “perfect” fuel it will still be used. But new sources of energy like thermonuclear and may be fusion power will be making great advances.
Bogged with domestic and interplanetary stuff none of the world powers separately no together (prevented by nationalistic competition) will send men to Mars. Moon base (most probably international – US/Russia /China /EU) will be under study/construction
Africa will remain worlds weakest spot and will be heavily donated by the developed world, but sporadic local conflicts fueled by the desire to control resources so much in demand elsewhere in the world will continue to burn across continent. Two faced politician in the rich world will speak about need for piece while secretly do everything to present situation in the desire to grab resources “on the cheap”
China will be leading players in Africa, but also some Russian huge companies like Gazprom, Nornickel and such, free from proper scrutiny their western counterparts (like BP, Shell etc) have to endure will be very active in corrupting local politicians and waging own mini wars over resources.

Berlin will be cultural and artistic center of Europe and to the large extend the world boasting vibrant and somewhat anarchic multinational community.

Wow, since I posted last on this topic, I've only read crazy idealogies and catastrophies that have extremely slim chances of happening. The only exception is Simfox's prediction(s) which actually take into account current situations without putting personal feelings and national pride in the way.

You know I hope and kind of think that what simfox said is what will likely happen.

But who knows

Its funny, back in the 50s and 60's stories and books like 1984 came out, it seems as if many though the future was going to either really suck, or we'd be nuclear dust....Yet today everything is fine. Maybe it was just luck.Or maybe the fears of what the future could be entered the public conscious and kept society on track towards a good future. Who knows.

Anyways, here's a local one I have thinking about. Unless you are from my area it probably is not very interesting.

Bryan/College Station, Texas in 2050:

The two cities will grow by about 30,000 people, giving the region about 200,000 people. These new people will mainly work in service industry and jobs involving colleges/government

Texas A&M and Blinn College will gain several thousand new students, probably about half, or 15k, of the 30k in new growth will be in students. This is because as the US economy continues to transition, a minimum 2 year associates degree with be the de-facto standard and probably be held by most if not all of the population. Jobs like nursing and education that are currently in demand will be in even more demand as the government has more programs such as nationalized healthcare. To cater to this increase, the Bryan Blinn campus will likely be absorbed by A&M and be expanded to up to at least 6 or 7 buildings, with a parking structure. Texas A&M will grow some as well. The main campus may become more dense and "outdated" buildings like the current MSC and maybe even the O&M tower will be demo'ed to make room for some new structures.

Both cities will see a rash of new construction, particularly apartments. Areas within close proximity to A&M that are dominated by older homes, like Southgate and some of the area behind Northgate will be completely leveled and rebuilt as mcmansions and townhomes, sans any historic structures.

Northgate in particular(and maybe DT bryan) may get some sort of mid-rise apartment building. And hopefully the fugly plaza hotel will be imploded

Kyle field will be the largest sporting facility in the known universe...

A lot of people seem to think that the UK will resign the European Union.

Why is that? Is the UK having any troubles?

The UK has been unwilling to switch over to the Euro. Also, the UK has strong national pride which prompts people to believe the UK will resign the European Union. Whether that is true or not is up to the future to decide.

I don't think the UK will leave the European Union, in fact I think they may start doing what we should have done and take more control and start directing policies and making our stance clear.

@saltandsauce - What bubble do you live in?? Those suggestions were some of the most laughable I have seen here, total lack of knowledge of world politics, economics and social structure, dear me, at least try and be realistic

Shingure- likely, but highly doubtful. The US is a yound country, along with the rest of the americas, the population is not aging faster than it is producing. How will NYC become the next New Orleans?? Unless a megaquake off on the west coast of Africa, a hurricane, yea sure, might do some pretty rough damage, but the NYC area can hold out most of the time.
