Need help with modding on M2 MacBook Air

For context I got SimCity 4 deluxe on steam and am trying to mod it, but iv only seen guides for the App Store version so I have no clue on what to do.

I have also tried to just stick the entire mudpack into the plugins folder but sadly did not work, so I would like some advices from any modders!

PS: would like to also join the discord server if possible!

Hi @choco,. Welcome to Simtropolis...

I am not an experienced Mac user, but I'm sure someone will be along with suggestions.

I did want to point out that since you've made a post in the forums, you should be able to connect to Discord through the join link.

The only difference between the App Store and Steam is the location of the Plugins folder. On Steam it should be inside Documents\SimCity 4\.

Placing mods there should ensure they are loaded when starting the game.

Note that SC4 will not load data inside .zip or other container formats. You must extract those before using them.

If you are still having problems, please tell us exactly which ‘mod pack’ you are trying to install and how you went about it.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

Ok, so I am mainly going to download NAM and maybe some assets like buildings and parks.

For the extraction of the .zip im using unarchiver (suggested by chatgpt), but I am still a bit confused as where the plugin folder is located? As I have browsed the local file and no additional files show up except the base game icon (ss attached for reference)

Edit: sorry for the weird language im not really costumed to tech or I wouldn't be use a Mac

Ignore any instructions you have read about the AppStore version, Steam doesn’t work the same way. Just look in the Documents folder of your Mac, inside is a folder for SimCity 4, inside of that is the Plugins folder where you need to place such mods.

Ok got it, found the plugins folder and got assets implemented and working but got with NAM 2 issues.

First is the 4gb patcher not working, it displays "Couldn't open executable" (ss linked for reference, also using crossover to run the patcher). I have watched your tutorial video but couldn't find the SimCity 4.exe on my Mac.

Second when I try to install NAM 48 the screen freezes in the first step, I cant scroll down to confirm or anything so cant proceed to the next steps. Also I do have the latest version of java installed. (ss attached for reference)

That step is only required when running the Windows version of the game, it does not apply to the Mac versions.

Great! But how do I use the 4gb patcher on a Mac then? (I heard other people say something about the permission but nothing showed up on privacy page)

The 4GB Patch is an .exe and doesn't run on a Mac, but the good news is that the Mac version doesn't need it.  The Mac port is 64-bit, so right out of the box, it already has the memory bandwidth (and then some) that the 4GB Patch helps provide to the still-32-bit Windows version.

That's the neat part, you don't!
Repeating what Null45 said, it's only required for the Windows version of the game.

It's not actually freezing, it's just the window is not large enough and it's been an issue for a while.
It confused me too when I first installed NAM lol

You just need to point your mouse pointer at the bottom-right edge of the window, and then resize the window.
There'll be a checkbox waiting for you there and once you click it, you'll be able to click on the tab menu at the top to continue with the installation.

I too am having trouble with my mac.

    I imagine that's extra frustrating.

I don't have a Mac myself, but I have read everything in this forum since about 2016 and some of it I remember. We'll need a more verbose description of the trouble you are having to in order to have any chance of offering useful advice.
