The images below are just photoshopped, but I am going to make some textures, and a modder could convert them into Simcity DAT files.

Image.png border=0

This is just a road to road intersection. The light coloured tar before the stop line is non-skid surfacing.

buslane21.png border=0

junction1.png border=0

What do you think of this? If you guys like it, I will make some textures.

Why does one drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

Why is delivery by boat called a cargo and one by land called a shipment?

We could change the color of the street tar, but I couldn't mod it into the game, hence why I need a modder.

Looks cool, I'd love to see that!

It get's a bit dull making US Cities all the time being a UK resident... Doesn't look right with the US road markings but cars driving on our side (Hence why I'm using the left to right driving mod at the moment)

And on the day of despair15.gif for English people a light is shown37.gif, and appears this topic, heralding a new era for users.

Oh and if you are doing the roads etc. what about the signs42.gif, it looks strange having the motorway signs on the wrong side, and not looking like the ones we have over here

    Dexter,

I like your textures, and your idea can certainly be implemented, but it may require some work: In a very quick check, I found the light gray street texture in something like 50 FSH files, and the non-skid tar at the intersections would probbably require RUL changes.

I have not looked at the dirt street mod, but I suspect that it does most of what you want to do, but with different textures.

When I saw this topic, I knew I had to reply. This is something that I have wanted ever since SC 3000 which used the american double yellow unbroken lines instead of the single white broken lines in SC and SC 2000. It would be a very nice change indeed. The markings are all the right way round for a change. (Hint to maxis: Make at least 2 different sets of textures for SC5) Here is what I want a normal road X intersection to look like./idealbb/files/XIntersectionJPEG.JPG
It would also be nice if there was changes to the type 21 exemplers so the traffic lights, street and stop signs and highway overhead signs were on the right side and actually only get added near offramps instead of just anywhere (like sc3k).
Thanks for starting this thread Dexter.

Cool, I would LOVE English textures for roads, I will offer to mod these textures in. But as smoncrie said, streets have about 50 textures, roads have even more, because of diagonals. You have your work cut out Dex. ;) . I don't know how to edit RULs, but if you will provide textures, then I'll happily help. ;)

Anyways, your textures are good, but the pavements (or sidewalks) in Britain don't have 90

i think it would be cool to build some parts of a road with dark tar and others grey, but i think that would be impossible...

    Larkyboof,

You could use the one way road textures to replace the road textures. They already have the dashed white lines down the center on the straights and diagonals. I offered to Dexter to help with the stoplight assemblies, but I haven't heard back from him....

We could use the oneway textures, but it's the intersection textures that need the work. The images above are just photoshopped, so I will somehow have to find the standard junction texture, and edit it.

    Swamper77:
You could try to change the signal placements to the layout below, but I think it has been done before on avenues, and it didn't work. If you can, you could try it on roads. Thanks.

Come on people who drive on the left. I am pretty sure you all want this mod (those who know this thread exists at least) In my opinion, the textures are ok but the props on the roads is what annoys me the most. That and the railway crossing textures and props. I would like to see this mod get itself in a higher gear and I hope that it does. Put this thread in your sigs to attract members.

    Hey,

I've only just come across this thread and am wondering if there's been any progress? I can't get enough of the UK-themed stuff for SC4. Who's up for a SimMars style UK version?? I know I am...

GasCooker, rp2005, simgoober and many others have produced some excellent UK stuff.

    Check out these:

    A quick question -

Do you *have* to use GMAX to create props, or can you create a flat image yourself and use that?

I have loads of resources for creating signs, markings etc - but I don't understand GMAX, so I couldn't make use of them on my own.

I'd especially like to move everything over to the left, and have the odd sign placed along the roads if that would be possible (I understand it'd have to be random, and not related to any real hazard)

This is an photoshopped example of what I think could be done.

    <ahttp://img112.exs.cx/img112/2244/newcity13jan0011067794015wj.jpg align=baseline>

As I say, I think I could create textures and flat images of props - but I can't use GMAX and couldn't put anything actually into DAT files or whatever. Obviously the sign wouldn't appear at that high a quality though (but thats probably a good thing - you don't want to be able to read that all the signs say the same thing)

You can just about make out some exit signs in this image that I did for my (now defunct) CJ.  They'd need tarting up for general release though and although the font for the town name is too small to read at z5 the road number isn't, which may make a generic sign difficult.

This is a good idea, but one which may take a little more effort than just replacing road textures.
If you are doing this to make English cities, you are going to need to do these things as well as texturing:
    1. Roundabouts.  Not every road interesction is a crossover, like Simcity, but these are only really found in suburban areas, and roundabouts in more traffic heavy areas.
    2. Highways. We do not have any elevated  (or ground highways per se), but motorways which are just plain roads that have more lanes. There are a few areas where there are kind of highway intersections (ive had to go through a few in London), they usually go straight into an avenue.
But I'm not saying you should quit this project. Its the opposite! I'd love to make a truly English town, (im desperate to model my home town of Crawley) and I really am behind you on this one! You can do it! COME ON DEXTER!
Oh and this might seem irrelevant to the post but Chelsea are in the final baby! COME ON YOU BLUES!

Another photoshop - I could do the road texture if anyone wanted it, but I'd need the original and someone else to actually mod it. Hopefully we'll see better traffic lights as a result of the mod that is being worked on there - if not we could possibly create our own props, even if they didn't animate?

    image52fe.jpg

If anyone could do the modding, I'm quite happy to do the textures 31.gif

NDP, I suggest you PM morifari, the zebra crossing dude, though I suppose he has (some of) the FSHs and the extracted BMPs.

Don't know if you aware of the fact that there are several road2road intersections (I count around 45 in preRH). And each intersection has an image for every zoom level (5) which multiplies whith 4 wealth levels (0,

    MayorBean-

I do know that there are alot of files to be changed - but for many of the repeats I'm essentially only changing the road - the wealth level and density only affects the pavement. So I think I can cut down alot of work by only editing the road, then repasting that onto the other images appropriately.

As for the 5 zoom levels, I was aware of that - however I was expecting that simply resizing the images should do the trick. I assume this would produce satisfactory results, but I've never really tried it.

Don't get me wrong - it'd be alot of work, but I think it'd be worth it. Besides, I need something to do :-p

NDP, I got a question: have you 'photoshoped' the traffic lights, too (at least two of them)? Or is this the look of the UK version?
Maybe I could provide an UK example for the 90

    MayorBean -

    My image is photoshopped

In the UK there is normally one signal on the left in front of the junction, and one on the right behind the junction. Overhead signals are rare, confined to dual carriageways, and placed in front of the junction. Hope that helps.

    INVITATION
    =========

Since there are at least 3 active 'EuropeanRoadNetwork' threads I'd like to invite everybody who's interested to participate in a discussion (thread or chat) about setting up this as ONE project.

    Why?
1st: I believe that especially the redesign of the road/street textures could be organized very efficient (making a variation of several road/street FSHs should be much less time consuming, if each tile has to be touched only once)
2nd: A discussion based on the opinion of many Simtropolitans is supposed to build up compromises. Not anything can be individual.
3rd: A coordinated project would minimize compatibility issues and could easiely/easylie/easyly (heck, how is this spelled ?) gather (bring together) a huge amount of knowlege and experience.

So, if YOU are interested, I suggest that we either meet in a chat room (which has to be created by a skilled Simtropolitan - I've never done something like this) or I will create an appropiate thread.
Please PM your opinion to MayorBean.

@Moderators/Admins: I crossposted this in the UK road textures, Zebra crossing and EuroStoplights threads. I'm aware that this is against the forum rule, but I hope you recognize what I'm aiming at. So don't delete this postings, please.

    Sincerely

    ~bean~

Edit: revoked due lack of interest.
