Changing Plugin Folder location

Can someone point me towards information regarding Plugin locations?    I currently have everything SimCity4 in my C: Programs (86).  I would like to have my Plugins in my D hard drive Documents under SimCity4/Plugins to free up space on my C drive and speed up game.

Sorry if I am just cluttering up the board, I tried to search for topics but I suck at searching.

This was covered long ago by @A Nonny Moose in this thread:

There is also a fuller explanation of the command switches here:

Edit: Also, you probably don't suck at searching, the search on this site is fairly to heavily borked and its usually easier to have google do the lifting for you using "site:simtropolis.com whatever you are looking for"

You can change it, but if your system folders like Documents are correctly set on D, you shouldn’t have to. That said, Windows does not make this easy.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

You can also use a symbolic link to change where the files actually live.  My 'Documents' folder also lives on my C:\ Drive but my SimCity 4 folder is on my D:\ Drive in my dropbox repository.

See this link for how to set it up:

Don't do that. SC4 has two default plugins folders, the one you have used under Programs, and another under "My Documents" or your system's equivalent.

First thing you should do is move almost all of the files from your Programs plugins folder to your Documents plugin folder. There are only a few exceptions (DLLs and Maxis data) discussed many times elsewhere.

Once you have that sorted, then we can talk about designating a custom user folder further afield.

Important safety tip: If you create (and point the game at) a custom user folder, then there's one config file that SC4 will always read from the default folder in documents but always write-on-exit to the custom folder. It's up to the user to copy that errant write back to the default location, otherwise you lose a bunch of settings (like where your region-view was centered when you left the game).

If using steam, change the launch options to something to the tune of
-UserDir:"D:\SimCity 4\"
