Hi! I have a question on how to play CSL

Hi everybody,

I'm a bit late to the party, but I would like to start playing Cities: Skylines. I really liked SC4 (and SC3), and played a lot years ago, but I think at this point it's better to move on to Skylines. *:kitty:

I am a little unsure though of what I am supposed to do. Do I need a Steam account, or do I download from Paradox Interactive and then use a launcher?

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate any comments.

Hiya, @CGeorges. Welcome to posting on Simtropolis. *:)

For these particular questions I feel they'd go better over in the Cities: Skylines forum so I'll whisk this topic over there. *;)

Paradox sells the same version as you get on Steam. Basically from them you just get a Steam key, which you then add to your account on Steam. And yes, you will need a Steam account to play the game. At least the Steam version is absolutely the best as you have easy access to a lot of custom content. ^^

Thanks for the response. Ok, so I suppose that I can simply buy it directly from the Steam site then.

    Hi again,

So I went ahead and bought it and I've played for a few hours. I must say I like it so far! *:8)

Question: So I understand that additional tiles unlock, but only up to 9 when you reach certain milestones. I understand there's a mod to unlock 81 tiles. Is this the mod by BloodyPenguin?

Just don't want to download the wrong one. There were a few it seems, but that one had 5 stars.

The one by BloodyPenguin is indeed the correct one. Unfortunately, the Steam Workshop - especially for Cities:Skylines - has become an absolute bloody mess. I imagine it must be hell to navigate for a beginner without guidance. In case  you have multiple choices of similar mods, chances are that all of them except one are dead. Thus a good way to see whether the mod you're looking at is the one you want is by checking the "last update" timestamp.

There are a few good modding guides on the workshop itself in case you want any more mods, like this one: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1411897315

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Kaschperl,

Thanks for the response. Yes, it seems to be somewhat of a mess so I really haven't downloaded anything yet with respect to mods. In fact, I don't even know what I am supposed to download it to and where to save to activate it. (I'm used to the SC4 way where the file is downloaded and put to a folder.)

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Yes, I'd like to start my 81-tile masterpiece so that mod is somewhat important. *:P

If there are any mods that are highly recommended due to game imbalances (like the industry doubler/quadrupler from SC4, for example, or the NAM) I'd really like to see what the options are.

Had a look at the link, and it's what I was looking for. I think I'll play the game for a while before I mod anything, to get used to the vanilla stuff first.

    I'll download the 81-tile mod though.   *:D

Go for it! Hope you have fun ;) You'll get familiar enough with modding sooner or later if you're interested in it, so don't worry. I'm glad that I could help.
