Hi everyone, just as the title says, I've been playing cities skylines for a while now and SimCity 4 for a long time, but should I consider buying this version now after all this time?

There were boys that did spent money for a very simple toy like a football and they were totally happy playing with this football and one became even a football star and earned a lot of money and he bought a big yacht and when the boy - now a grown up man - was on his yacht, he played with his football, because basically just staying on the yacht was quite anoying but playing the old football on a yacht - that was fun.

Basically games are like toys - the fun they give to you is the most important thing about them. You don't need everything to have fun. It's very different on people, what is fun to them and I'm afraid, you'll have to find out yourself. Some like jokes about genital organs, some like maths. Some like both. It's too much difference in people to give a general advice 'what is fun'.

In my opinion a set of badminton rackets is much more fun for summer than SC2013.

And most people would say - if you have played c:s and sc4 already, most probably SC2013 won't give you any new experience and add any new fun.

So how's about a chipmunk? They can be terrible funny. You can make videos and post them on YouTube and become famous. I doubt anyone want's to see SC2013 videos on YouTube anymore and to become famous with sc2013 videos. So a chipmunk is definitely the better choice.

But still - this is only my individual point of view.

SimCity (2013) is a limited city sim. First, the city size is much smaller than C:S and SC4. Second, the game doesn't give you lots of flexibility (including editing prebuilt highway) unlike SC4 and especially C:S. Third, the community only made few mods available for the game and it's limited by the game limitation (for instance, you can't destroy anything outside the city border without tools). However, SC2013 is lighter than C:S. Still, C:S is worther than this game if you've high-spec'd computer (with dedicated GPU) and SC4 if you can't afford high-spec'd computer.

Thanks.

I've never played SC2013 so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I believe the way it worked out during the programming of the game is the marketing peeps pulled their heads out of a particular body orifice long enough to say: We want a city simulator that is simple enough for anyone to use and we want it to be an online game only. When released they botched the roll out so badly that hardly anyone could get connected to their servers to play. Eventually that got straightened out as well as an offline option was added. The dedicated SC4 players didn't care for the game since it was scaled down and less realistic.

Here on ST, of the three major games (those with their own forums and sub forums) SC2013 ranks last for the number of topics and posts and current activity. This indicates to me most peeps don't care for it. Ofc, it's a matter of personal preference and ultimately you are the only one who can make a decision for yourself. Me? I'm never going to try it even if it was free.

I bought SimCity 2013 on release week, im going to be honest and say that i did get some enjoyment out of the game and put a decent amount of time into the game. however, the game servers are very lacking nowadays, with the chances of playing with anyone very scarce; even without multiplayer the game lacks anything new or innovative that cities skylines or SimCity 4 provide, and if you've played SimCity 4, then I would stick with it. If you like the look of the game then go for it, but i think it lacks any substantial content and is quite lacking with any terrain editing or space to build cities.

I just bought it, as its going for $20 in the Apple App store right now. Its 100% off-line mode and Origin free.  The servers are still up, but barely anyone is on it, so if you choose to go online, you're going to waiting for a looooonnng time before someone joins you, if at all. And you better hope that they aren't trolls or anyone with ill intentions. As in someone who builds a bad, unhelpful city, or abandons you and your region, leaving you to pick up the slack.

Having played through it for the last couple of weeks and have thoroughly mastered the game, here is my two-cents about it.

Pro: It does introduce some good ideas and concepts, mostly based off of and around economy/economic management of a city, something that was introduced in SC2000, but for some reason, left out of SC3 and 4. I like how Airports and Landmarks are truly functional as far as them attracting tourists and commerce. As you would expect, the graphics look good and the detail you get on individual sims is good. The charts, graphs, and data management and visual presentation on such data are great.

Con: Just about everything else about the game. This review sum it up for me in a nutshell: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/21/wot-i-think-SimCity/#more-146846

And these posts:

But to add to those, it's pretty egregious that they left out terraforming, region editing, and of course, the small city size, that even with the mods to make it bigger, it's only slightly bigger, and still criminally small. In that respect, it's ridiculous that they added all of these buildings to plop and use, but they lack the space to include even half of them.

Even the region system is extremely flawed and nonsensical. It's bad enough you can't edit the existing ones or create new ones, despite these huge regions, you, both in on and offline mode, only three of them and one great work between them are directly connected. The other cities in the region don't connect to your three. So its basically one huge region split into mini-regions that have nothing to do and zero interaction with each other, which is bizarre.

They also left out a whole lot from previous Sim games for some reason: no beaches, no farms or farming, no subways, no Zoos, Museums, Courthouses, Prisons, Military Bases, I can go on and on. Playgrounds and sports fields are considered "low income/middle income," for some reason as if rich kids don't play sports or use playgrounds?!? Everything must connect to a road, and in general, how car-centric it is. No city ordinances. You can't even cut funding to services. They dumbed it down to an "on/off" switch to the individual public buildings. And let's not even go into disasters. They're cool to watch, but that's just it, you can only watch, you can't do anything as far as directly deploy emergency services/military to control and contain it. Nothing at all.

Its pretty much SimCity Societies and SimCity Buildit combined the desktop version. It's hardly a true city simulator, but more of the mobile gaming, plop and look and forget ported to a desktop aiming to rope in the Farmville/Mobile gaming generation. Like the reviews I posted noted, the actual city simulation that exists in it is pedestrian at best, and broken at worse.  And since EA killed off Maxis and development for this game and continues to snub longtime fans like us, I don't see any new DLC to add the many missing features or correct its many issues for this SimCity, or the SimCity franchise as a whole in the near or far future on the horizon other than expanding on SC BuildIt. It's going to be SC4 and Skylines forever I suppose.

Based off of everything I said, yeah, don't waste your time or money unless you really, really, want to seeing as how its cheap to buy now and you don't need server access to play.

I went to this forum to know some opinions of SimCity (2013) but the opinions seems a bit negative. Does anyone know of any future plan of SimCity 6 or something?

@Gogot

As best I can tell SC2013 is a game peeps consider fun for maybe a month at best. I've not played it myself, so I cannot give a first hand account. However, based on the near inactivity in the 2013 forums I'd say that backs up the assertion that it's not very popular.

It is quite unlikely that there will ever be a SimCity 6. Many peeps tho consider Cities: Skylines a worthy successor to the SimCity line. There are, ofc, numerous peeps who still love SimCity 4 (myself among them).

@CorinaMarie Thanks for your post! Some years ago I played Skylines but in a first impression I couldn't love it. Maybe I could give it a second chance. In the meantime I guess I will continue in SC4.

@Gogot

SimCity BuildIt for mobile is technically "SimCity 6," and the last official SimCity game put out by EA, and probably the last SimCity we're gonna get from them for a while. SimCity BuildIt is pretty much the mobile version of SimCity 2013, but with more expanded options and is based on the freemium model. The reviews and backlash weren't great on that one either, but it's proven to be popular with 50 million downloads as of 2017 as EA continues to expand and add DLC to it.

As I said in my post, Maxis has been shut down for good and the employees and SC developers and etc have been either laid off, quit, or moved on and dispersed to other areas of EA to work on other projects, namely The Sims, which is also on life support and facing the ax too after the last one didn't go down well either with consumers or reviewers. Will Wright has also seemingly moved on from SimCity as well and does not have any plans to do anything regarding that.

Given how EA and the industry and world today is, I can see EA attempting to reboot and try it again in a few years because the fanbase is too strong and it's too lucrative to let it die forever, but in the meantime, the SimCity franchise is officially dead and gone for the immediate future. :(

Hi, @Yaris020 Actually, It's very sad to loose the started objetive of a game released in 2003 (!) and nobody has generated anything like that.  In my opinion the failure started with SimCity Societes (A wrong mix between Sims and...whatever) and go on with SimCity 5. As all you know, Skylines try to get more complexity, but the textures, interfaz and general experience is not the same, definitely.  Finally, we are standing and supporting (with the exchange of mods and the emotional support in forums) a way to see the simulation games and waiting for a SimCity 6 really up to scratch. Something like this:
