That's a laptop or desktop ? Anyway, sure Cities Skylines is a "Feed me with RAM!" game but the game engine isn't the best to be honest.

A desktop, the motherboard was specified ;)

Honestly if you don't need it now, I'd hold off a little while. The newer X-Series Core i7s (and for the terminally loaded, i9s too) are coming, but you'll need a different socket mainboard for them and the other X-edition CPUs. Similarly a new refresh of the main line of chips is due in Autumn as always. As such, June is a bad month to be buying CPUs, since you'll get stuck a generation behind and likely pay the same price too.

Ultimately the answer to all these questions is simply, how much do you want to spend? The more you spend on the CPU, GPU and RAM, the more your computer will be able to handle.

  • RAM is one of the biggest issues with Skylines, so 32GB is a good bet. 64GB would likely be overkill, then again it depends how far you are looking to push things.
  • The GPU is fine, again a good amount of VRAM, more is always better, but after 8GB it gets very expensive.
  • Similarly, the game would benefit from having more CPU power, but I seem to recall it's not well optimised for anything beyond 4 cores.

Your i7 is starting to look overpriced looking at the suggested retail of the new X-Series chips. In short AMD are about to kick Intel into action by releasing many core CPUs under the Ryzen brand. This may have been what spurred Intel to finally bring many-core CPUs to market after years of people asking for them. With proper competition for the first time in many years -  AMDs have been behind Intel since the Core i series were launched, a long way behind. Intel CPUs are likely to fall in price in the longer term if AMD turn out to have a truly competitive product line. But right now Intel can pretty much charge what they want for CPUs.

Since if I were spending that sort of money on a computer, I'd want it to last a good while, you'll get a better return on your investment if you have a little patience. Given the new options coming in just a few months, I'd wait and see how the dust settles. I imagine you'll get significantly more power for the same money as a result.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

Well.. to be honest, I was planning on upgrading some of my laptop components some time ago. I ended up buying a new laptop, which is on the way.

specs:

Overclocked Intel Core i7 6820HK 2.7GHz Processor

 Overclocked 2400MHz 64GB DDR4 Memory

GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5

512GB SSD + 1TB HDD with NVMe PCIE Controller

NVIDIA G-SYNC 17.3-inch 1080p Display

I love it so far!!

    Thanks for your reply!

Hm, I am waiting almost all this year. So I want buy it as soon as possible. Sadly dont have enough money for 64GB ram, anyway I can upgrade when i will have enough..

Ye, i saw better gpus are really much more expensive, like double price, which isnt possible for me. (but there are many of 1070)

About cpu... i read much about intel and amd, but cannot decide. I7 is better for games and ryzen is better for videomaking etc..My priority is game. But is is true?

At the moment, is best choice get i7 7700k?  They are saying, get ryzen it wil lbe better in future..

My plan is buy it at 1st of July.. (cannot wait more for playing this awesome game with high end setup..I am saving money from January - I am not rich man)
