I've been tinkering with the decorations renderer...

Results are promising, considering that I don't particularly like the vanilla sprites..

However, it looks kind of flat from up close... but still better, in my opinion.

Could be better though, particularly considering they look a bit odd when you look straight down from up-close...

What do you think?

It's clearly an improvement! Maybe the normal sprites lack a bit of density but it's probably hard to make them wider but still not too flat...

Having said that I'm using your mod to get rid of the sprites anyway because I find them odd in lawns... And because they look bad but not anymore with this :D

Huge improvement! And for those areas we view very up close we're still likely to use trees (well, grass but you know what I mean :P). I'd love having these much better sprites! Does that mean we could make the rock ones look like something and not weird blobs too? :D

Here's the thing, the quality looks way better, but the original looks fuller -- it seems to cover up more ground and doesn't look as thin/sparse as the new sprites. Ofc that's just because it's thicker per sprite (so the blurry parts cover up more), so idk, I guess it's up to personal preference :0

There is also the problem that the new ones are actually just 2d sprites on a plane, whereas the originals are rendered dynamically onto a render texture so they give the appearance of being 3d. The new ones look the same from any angle... even from top down. So yeah... trying to figure out how to load better plants that are also 3d. Meanwhile, at least I can increase the resolution of the originals... and change the texture too, perhaps this is the best solution after all, just making the vanilla sprites better.

I agree the old ones look more dense, but the updated ones look so much better. And I think density won't be that much of a problem once you combine them with grass/lawn assets, like the ones by Pdelmo. Something that wasn't really an option with the old ones, because they looked fugly no matter what you tried, or what you combined them with. So in my opinion it's a massive improvement: in fact, it's hardly a contest at all!

The one thing that will probably prevent me from using even these improved ones is that you don't have any control over where they show up (at least afaik.): and whether vanilla or these new ones, it looks kind of odd seeing them prop up on yard tiles and other decals.

Making some progress with a good friend's help :) Thanks MrMaison!

It's possible to change the model used to render the sprites in 3d :D

I agree with Judazz that it would be nice to selectively pick where you want them to grow though. Who knows, maybe it's feasible to mod it in?

So there are 4 slots for each decoration type, that are used to render sprites, which is why we have different sizes of "cliff" decorations, aka greasy blobs.

This is pretty awesome though because it means we can have 4 different models for each decoration type. In these images, I'm using 3 models that MrMaison gave me, but with different scale/rotation to create more variety. Rocks are on the to-do list, I only changed the textures and resoltion on them so far but you can already see they look much better(the rock in the second image)
