Oh becca that looks brilliant. Utterly cool! Try the 3ds section for GMAX models for trees and plants (the  creators allow their models to be used in other peoples BAT with appropriate credit), otherwise pmiller has done heaps of stuff.
Or if you want to give it a go try using little elipses for grass tapered and twisted for the cracks in the concrete down near the river and then just little triangles arrayed at the top of the concrete hanging down (not too much or it will look like either confetti or high wealth!)

As for graffiti; odd from sweden has down some really good stuff. The graffiti in the lot editor wouldn't work because a) it's inside the building and b) its on a sloping wall.

Looking Good!

Wowwee  Great concrete look and lovely dirty water!!!! 44.gif  While I was flying over L.A. (Google rather) I noticed many avenue four-way intersections with the river running diagonally under the entire intersection.   Pictured in link: http://maps.google.com/?t=k&ll=33.72276,-117.988722&spn=0.003846,0.007242&t=k
I don't know how detailed or how far you want to take this project but these look (would look) very real if possible.  I have no idea if they are so just tell me if i'm dreaming. 21.gif24.gif

Thank you. I do plan some diagonal pieces, and these would not be too hard to do. I'll see what I can come up with when I am ready to start the diagonal pieces.

OMG! I love the last pic!!!! The way the small branch comes out from under the street and joins the main river is just awesome!

As for the bridges, I found a great photography site from a Yahoo image search. I'll just post this link to it, b/c there's a lot of awesome pics there. They're all black and white, but capture the spirit of the structures. There's like 4 different types to work from there.

Will figure out the best way to make a shopping cart, or try to find a pre-made one that would be easy to use. The difficulty would be in making what is essentially a metal mesh show up right even at the closest zooms. Usually, unless the item is really thick, wire meshes don't show up even at zoom 5.

I know what you mean, the chain link fences I made had to be a bit exagerated to show up close to the way I wanted them too. I tried to make a hubcap to put in the water, but it was so small you could hardly see it.

Well, Becca, if you need a shopping cart, I got one for you now! Here's a pic for you of the model, with a scaled, zoom 5 preview (at high quality) in the inset.

    cart.jpg

I used the Simruler available on the STEX to scale the cart. If you want to use it, you're welcome to it. Also if you don't like the scale, I'll send you the gmax file and you can make it as big as you want, change colors, etc. There aern't any textures on it.

Let me know if you want the model, and we'll go from there. 1.gif

Here is a pic of the ditches with the new textures. I am going to add some more variation in the pieces, as well as a fresh water version, then post them.

    excellent work so far though!

How are you going to handle sloping? Water falls? Slimy muddy falls? 10.gif I hope there's no mist... OY! Don't breath THAT in! 14.gif

Sparky - Yes I did, I can do something like that.

Buggi - I do plan to handle elevation changes, and see if I can do some slope pieces.

Wow that shopping cart is amazing, but if I may throw out some information....

There are alot of shopping carts in our rivers.....Maybe as many as 5 per every couple of yards, but for realism' sake you should have like 2 or 3 max on a lot,but that is just my advice from what I've seen around here....

Maybe just make a lot with one cart then a few tiles down the river a tile with 2 or 3 could be added....it'd be pretty perfect....

These are just the ditches, of course, but I can add more. Each lot has 6 variations so they do not look overly tiled, and they plop randomly. There won't be much control over when a shopping cart or two will show up.

I am also accepting any other models of flotsum (due credit will be given) that anyone wants to add them.

Anytime Becca! I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what else could go in there. Burnt-out cars are a staple in LA River scenes in the movies... Another idea (which I shall explore further later in the week) would be various vending machines (in various states of disrepair) and parking meters. Perhaps a bunch of oil drums, maybe one set up like a hobo campfire? Those shouldn't be too hard to do... Old tires... Any other junk? Let's trash it! 3.gif

Hooligans here love to steal newspaper boxes and parking meters, break them to take all the money inside, then dump them in riverbeds, etc.. Not exactly good stewards of the environment, the are!

I've sort of stereotyped the LA River as a sort of place where anything goes, a place of pure anarchy where vandalism and drag racering reign supreme! The real place is probably just a unappealing dumping grounds.

There are models of vending machines on the STEX, I'll download those. I can do some oil drums as well. Anything else you want to make to add to this would be great.

Make sure that the vending machines are pretty beat up. I'll see about finding a good free 3d car model or frame which I can make to look as if it has made the chop shop rounds!

The vending macines on the STEX turned out to be props, and not models, so I will make my own.

Maybe some of DT's trees could work.

Also your guys ideas are very realistic with the burnt out cars although only one piece would need a burnt out car,but for the vending machines and meters yeah there would be a few....newspaper boxes aren't much in the river, but paper and other junk float freely enough....

    Great job!

I am also impressed by this - it is not beautiful and I would never download it, but it is very realistic, attention to detail is great, and you have succeeded with your textures. As I said, love the idea of realism - but probably not for my towns... or maybe in some deprived areas of Istrinia 1.gif
