Hi,

I created a Text Loading Mod with quotes about cities and city life, based on Craig-Abcvs' work. I acknowledge it was pretty easy to create, but since it took a bit of time to put together, and I hope other people might enjoy it, I am thinking of uploading it to the Exchange.  I’ve never uploaded anything before, so I have a few questions.

-Does anyone need to confirm is it worth uploading? (Is it worth uploading?)

-Should anyone test it beforehand? (Does anyone want to volunteer?)

-Should I upload it also to the LEX?

Thanks

One persons junk is another persons treasure. So if you have something unique, feel free to upload it. There are bound to be others who enjoy your mod.

Testing isn't a pre-requisite. If you've just edited LText files, it's not really necessary. The worst that could happen is that the wrong text was displayed. Of course it's always a good idea to provide a high standard quality when releasing mods.

Uploading to the LEX is totally up to you. For content, your biggest audience is usually going to be on the STEX. But it doesn't hurt to have additional exposure.

Oh, I like the idea. If you want, I can make a spanish translation to add more variety. Just consider spanish has usually longer texts than english, so it is probable that some quotes get cropped out of the screen.

Years of dealing with this problem working for a major games company localising games. Japanese (our source language) is so neat and compact. But if you think Spanish is a problem, wait until you see all the long German compound words. Want to talk about the rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz anyone?

"Ley para la transferencia de labores de monitoreo del etiquetado de la carne de vacuno"

Shorter words, but longer phrase anyway.

And yes, japanese is almost magical in its soft-spot location, with relatively few characters and small words. Their usage of Twitter is astonishing!

    Hi,

Thanks for the info @rsc204, that’s sounds like a good approach! For the LEX, I wasn't sure if there is some sort of implicit practice for BATers/Modders.

@matias93, Yeah, I’d love if you would be willing to do a Spanish version.  Thanks for offering.  I tried to use mostly short quotes to keep the text easily readable (as you know since sometimes they change quickly in game!), so I think it would work if the Spanish text is a bit longer. Would you like the file by email or say, dropbox? Do you think we should have Spanish text for the description and in the readme?

You could even post the list of quotes here and then copying back to the file.

    Hi,

Here is the text! There are 120 lines. Some of them are kind of poetic... let me know if this is what you had in mind!

All cities are mad: but the madness is gallant. All cities are beautiful: but the beauty is grim.

Cities force growth, and make men talkative and entertaining, but they make them artificial.

The axis of the earth sticks out visibly through the centre of each and every town or city.

Towered cities please us then, and the busy hum of men.

What is the city but the people?

No city should be too large for a man to walk out of in a morning.

Clearly, then, the city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo.

Divine Nature gave the fields, human art built the cities.

The roaring street is hung for miles, with fierce electric fire.

Suburb: a place that isn't city, isn't country, and isn't tolerable.

    10

A city is a language, a repository of possibilities.

God made the country, and man made the town.

A city is a large community where people are lonesome together.

I have an affection for a great city. I feel safe in the neighbourhood of man, and enjoy the sweet security of the streets.

I actually think Johannesburg represents the future.

The city disappears street by street as you enter it.

Don't let the city steal your soul.

Cities are the abyss of the human species.

In the country the darkness of night is friendly and familiar, but in a city, with its blaze of lights, it is unnatural, hostile and menacing.

In Rome you long for the country; in the country - oh inconstant! - you praise the distant city to the stars.

    20

This world's a city full of straying streets, and death's the market-place where each one meets.

What strange phenomena we find in a great city, all we need do is stroll about with our eyes open.

In cities life swarms with innocent monsters.

Are you a lucky little lady in the City of Light? Or just another lost angel... City of Night?

I don't know what London's coming to, the higher the buildings the lower the morals.

Like a man who has been dying for many days, a man in your city is numb to the stench.

By its nature, the metropolis provides what otherwise could be given only by travelling; namely, the strange.

For those who are lost, there will always be cities that feel like home.

American cities are like badger holes, ringed with trash, and surrounded by piles of wrecked and rusting automobiles.

Whenever I happen to be in a city of any size, I marvel that riots do not break out everyday.

    30

But cities aren’t like people; they live on and on, even though their reason for being where they are has gone out to sea.

Dull, inert cities contain the seeds of their own destruction and little else.

Different cities visit us daily, they exist in the clouds.

God gave us ground we created a city, God gave us time we need to create a future.

    Cities are never random.

This city is cool, Heh heh.

    Uh, this town sucks...

Imagine having a city full of things that no other city had.

I never learned how to tune a harp, but I know how to raise a small inconsiderable city to glory and greatness.

Lively, diverse, intense cities contain the seeds of their own regeneration.

    40

I love the city, even though it isn't mine.

Cities were always like people, showing their varying personalities to the traveller.

Depending on the city and on the traveller, there might begin a mutual love, or dislike, friendship, or enmity.

It is a city of alchemists and dreamers, its medieval cobbles trod by golems, mystics, and invading armies.

Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.

One city gives you gifts, another robs you. One gives you the heart’s affections, the other destroys your soul.

Cities and countries are as alive, as feeling, as fickle and uncertain as people.

There’s something about arriving in new cities, wandering empty streets with no destination.

In cities everything imaginable can be dreamed.

Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears.

    50

The city's full of people who you just see around.

A city isn’t so unlike a person. They both have the marks to show they have many stories to tell.

All cities are beautiful: but the beauty is grim.

We chose to load this city, and do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard...

Paris is a woman but London is an independent man puffing his pipe in a pub.

Venice is like eating an entire box of chocolate liqueurs in one go.
Cities are the place built out of Man's ceaseless failure to overcome himself.

To be far from the madding crowd is to be mad indeed.

Anybody who predicts the death of cities has already met his spouse.

Cities bear the unmistakable imprint of their own culture and world view in every street and building.

    60

A city has to be open to continuous development, free to evolve and grow with the demands of new times.

You delight not in a city's seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to your questions.

Canadian cities looked the way American cities did on television.

A great city was never built for the comfort and happiness of its citizens, but to astonish the world.

I am not interested in living in a city where there isn't a production by Samuel Beckett running.

Cities were built to measure time, to remove time from nature.

Like science fiction accounts of the future, ideal cities quickly become outmoded.

The most successful cities combine the cycles of nature with specific, local cultural characteristics.

A city is an expression of continuity through will and imagination.

    Mumbai is infectious.

    70

The city gives even to children a sophisticated look that baffles the casual psychologist.

I believe that our cities thrive at the expense of our villages; that our industries exploit agriculture.

The modern human has mastered the art of building toxic homes and cities.

Cities transcend brick and mortar, they're the vessels into which human knowledge is poured.

Only in a crowded, diverse place like New York, surrounded by strangeness, do I come home to myself.

Laziness has made our cities unclean.

Cities get built out of poet's dreams.

    Cities make you afraid.

The city itself lives on its own myth.

We no longer produce laborers, we rather pray to God to send laborers to come and build our cities.

    80

I have been both a ghost and haunted in the city I love.

The city, as it awoke from its slumber, seemed to be built on quicksand. The stability was illusory.

Most of the time the city is covered with a layer of honking cars and greed, and sirens.

All around us, Karachi kept moving.

In cities where peace flourishes, men are more consumed by jealousy and anxiety than in cities under a besieging army.

The cities make ferocious men because they may corrupt man.

In cities it is useless to look at the stars or to describe them, worship them, or seek direction from them.

There is no logic that can be superimposed on the city.

Budapest is a dreamed-up city; a city almost completely faked; a city invented out of other cities.

    Venice is Disneyland for grown-ups.

    90

Cities were once rural and one day they will turn to be rural again.

Cities make people sick; they create living dead! Get away from the cities in every possible occasion!

Love and cities are always inextricably entwined.

Not every city will succeed, because not every city has been adept at adapting to new ideas.

The city is so expensive and gruelling sometimes it is easy to be unsure why you are there.

Civilization is a word that simply means "living in cities."

Cities have the capability to at any moment shift out of the familiar, even if you've lived in one all your life.

Go ahead and laugh at Detroit. Because you are laughing at yourself.

You can't love a city if you have no memories buried there.

London is on the whole the most possible form of life.

    100

London is not a pleasant place; it is not agreeable, or cheerful, or easy, or exempt from reproach.

Cities are murky places - hatching grounds for monsters.

It is the nature and pleasure of townspeople to distrust the city.

City life is calculated to keep man from entering into himself and thinking about spiritual things.

A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time.

She loved the way her city always sounded like it was celebrating.

Cities force growth, and make men talkative and entertaining, but they make them artificial.

If you're too free, you're like the way Hong Kong is now. It's chaotic.

Los Angeles is like San Diego’s older, uglier sister that has an infection.

Los Angeles is 72 suburbs in search of a city.

    110

Venice is a hallucinatory incubus, the most artificial environment in the world.

Eventually, I think Chicago will be the most beautiful great city left in the world.

Chicago, like other great commercial centers, is unfit for human habitation.

You go away from Vancouver for a month and there's three new skyscrapers.

From the 1920s to the 1950s, neon-lit streets pulsed with visual excitement from Vancouver to Miami.

But if you go from Moscow to Budapest you think you are in Paris.

Moscow is a huge inspiration for me. I love what I find there, I love being there.

If Aphrodite chills at home in Cyprus for most of the year, then Fez must be the goddess’s playground.

A little imagination goes a long way in Fez.

Some think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth it is a city of freedom.

Let's see what we can do. I'll go by parts:

    4. [I'm not sure about this one] Las ciudades de altas torres nos agradan en un momento, y luego lo hace el ocupado zumbido de los hombres.

    12. Dios hizo el campo, y el hombre hizo el pueblo. [country can also be 'país', and 'town' could be 'pueblo', which is anything between a hamlet and a city]

[wow, this deserves some context]

    25. No sé a qué va Londres, si a edificios más altos o a morales más bajas.

Also, I recommend you to name the authors of this quotes, at least on the readme of the plugin. I recognized a couple, mainly from Jane Jacobs and her critics, which are a great reading for anyone interested on city building.

Thanks for let me participate on your project!

Thanks so much! You work quick! :) Thanks for finding that duplication. To replace it, could you translate on one from Pablo Neruda? "Valparaíso, how absurd you are…life has always surprised you.” I couldn't find one about Santiago. ;)

Thanks for the compliment, in fact, is sort of a trade-off: I can read english as it were spanish, so translating results very easy; on the other side, my english grammar is terrible and my pronunciation is far worst.

I found the original one, and is a bit different; it says:

"Valparaíso, qué disparate eres, [...] siempre te sorprendió la vida", which would be, in english:
"Valparaíso, such a folly you are, [...] life always surprised you".

For Santiago, and following the trend of communist artists, this one is by Silvio Rodríguez:

"There I loved a terrible woman, crying for the ever eternal smoke —of that city corraled by winter symbols", or in spanish:
"Allí amé a una mujer terrible, llorando por el humo siempre eterno —de aquella ciudad acorralada por símbolos de invierno"

Thanks! Perfect! I'll spend the next week or so creating the Spanish version and testing it out. I'll be in touch if any in particular needs shortening/modifying. Thanks again!

Wow! this is a really cool idea, I'll surely download this mod.

The original quotes are funny, but they can get tiresome; plus, some are erroneously translated in the Spanish version of the game.

For example, there's one that says: "Recuperando de la tienda trasera" when it should say "Regresando de detrás de la tienda" I assume the original quote goes "Coming back from the backstore"

I'll stay tuned to see how it goes. :)

By the way, can you check some of my translations? There surely are some errors or misinterpretations...

For the quote about Santiago, is it OK to modify it like this? (So it's clear it refers to Santiago): "En Santiago amé a una mujer terrible, llorando por el humo siempre eterno —de aquella ciudad acorralada por símbolos de invierno."

I think is better to left it as is, not only to preservate it, but to allow other cities to be identified. Teheran, for example, matches perfectly.
