What if the Trojans had been a shade less trusting and rejected the wooden horse? What if Troy had survived and thrived? What if Trojan society had carried on, a third successful classical empire to match Greece and Rome? I know that I have another CJ, Astoria/Crowther, on the go and I'm still very committed to that. But I'm also developing Troy, and frankly I'm too enthusiastic about it to keep it to myself. So here's 14 teaser pics, in no particular order, which will show you how I go about building cities.

First Post!9.gif

Great idea - it is very nice to see another alternative history CJ emerging *grin*

The concept of Troy surviving is an interesting one - with an empire spanning the black sea and the regions around it - it would have prevented the foundation of byzantium and the Eastern Roman empire unless it also fell to the Romans.

Your version of the history should be interesting to see - will definately be watching...
and the screenies so far looks very nice

Cheers!44.gif

Great idea and the beginning looks very promising.

Just two details:

1. Like all BATted embankments the great embankment set by marrast shows steps if the terrain is not perfect even. In these cases try to use Jeroni's fırst seawall set (they are only textures) and change the embankment locally.

2. Try to avoid those ugly railway - Ys. At the central station you already ınstalled the switches to be able to access all tracks. To avoid them you will need some more space but the effect is worth it IMHO.

Can't wait to see more developed pics!

Wow, I was just watching Troy again last night.

*fondly remembers Brad Pitt in his sweaty armor, sigh* 36.gif

*snaps back to reality*

Oh, er, yes, um, this city has a great layout and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with all those new classical BATs. 2.gif

Very nice. I like the swimming area-type thing. However, troy was several miles inland, and it wasn't the trojans being trusting that was the problem. One of the preists said no, but the Gods wanted troy to fall, so they killed him with on of Posiedon's lovely pets. Doesn't really matter though.
Nice city, good work

Interesting.Massive use of bats and the canals look pretty cool.I like the shape of the land,but maybe a different land mod cause the land is too odd a shade of brown.

Interesting work and I can't wait for another update!

BTW... Good job on getting so many posters...11.gif

Wow, promising start Vitruvius. I love your canals and waterways layout. It really lends it an ancient inspired touch and reminds me of pictures from Venice, Italy (I never was there personally though). And I also great job on that alternate history thing! Sounds very interesting!

I also like your use of BATs, such as the landmark (lighthouse?) and Charing Cross Station. Great work.

I look forward to more.

    Hello everyone. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to update this journal. I've been exceptionally busy at work, and also recently bought Civilisation 4 which I've been playing heavily (great game). Also, I wanted to be certain to update with a bit of a bang, and my play style involves a hell of a lot of time and patience.

    I'll answer your comments first.

    slann: Thank you! Troy is only going to be loosely based on history. Its mere survival would be a miracle - it would have to fight off the Greeks, the Persians, the Romans, the barbarians, the Muslim Caliphate, possibly the Crusaders, the Golden Horde, the Arabs again, Venice, Russia, France, Britain, Russia again, the Nazis, and the Soviet Union. A tall order.

    ginchael: No. This is actually a map of Lagos from the STEX. I just liked it. As I said, loosely based.

    sloppet: Thank you!

    cnystrom1: Thank you!

    chocolatemax285: Thank you! I don;t have much to work on re: what Troy might have looked like, so I'm making it up as I go along. By the way, I love your Avatar.

    Nardo69: Thank for the tips. I've rebuilt that railway junction, you'll be able to see it in a future update. I'm doing all I can to avoid steps, but want to stick with Marrast's walls because I prefer the effect.

    jacqulina: Thank you!

    mayormommy: Thank you! Brad Pitt is, sadly, still not on the STEX, but you'll see some classica BATS in this update.

    Micah: Thanks! I'm quite new to sea walls, this is the first region of mine to use them extensively.

    decola: I'm afraid you may be a bit disappointed.

    cifa: Thank you!

    superchad: Thank you!

    pipishere: Thank you!

    rustalot42684: The pics I showed aren't coastal, they're on a lagoon, but point taken. I'm just using Troy as a creative jumping-off point.

    soldyne: I had no idea that Troy had rail road technology. - Oh, it will, it will ...

    Cjah: Thanks! I wasn't expecting that much interest on a CJ with hardly any buildings yet ...

    PhilsCafe: Thanks Phil! If you like canals, I hope you'll find a lot to like about this CJ ...

    Anyway, let's get on with update #1:

    CLASSICAL TROY

    This is what remains of the ancient city of Hector and Helen. Today, it is a World Heritage Site. The walls are long gone but for a single gate.

    <ahttp://img317.imageshack.us/img317/1767/classicaloverview6kp.jpg align=baseline>

    The famed topless towers of Ilium - a few still stand, unburned.

    <ahttp://img136.imageshack.us/img136/2971/toplesstowers7ih.jpg align=baseline>

    Some general views:

    <ahttp://img480.imageshack.us/img480/1866/classicalview20qs.jpg align=baseline>

    <ahttp://img70.imageshack.us/img70/3089/classicalview16jx.jpg align=baseline>

    <ahttp://img480.imageshack.us/img480/6428/classicalview46pp.jpg align=baseline>

    Although the city's mighty defences are long gone, the great gate has been kept - it is topped by an equine statue of Hector, Vanquisher of the Achaeans, and overlooks Wooden Horse Square, where the cowardly, treacherous Greeks attempted their famous deception:

    That's all for now.

    Answers to correspondents:

    Sloppet: Thank you! I don't get a great deal of free time to fiddle with these cities what with work and family, but I will be keeping this up despite long silences.

    USA Patriot: Thanks very much! I find really detailed work - fiddling and fiddling and fiddling until it looks "just right" really quite calming.

    FabioCB: Thanks!

    Jacqualina: Thank you!

    Frymon: Thank you! Drop in any time!

    Off we go ...

    Troy: Update 3: Lower Canal District

    First, a mosaic overview of the area we'll be looking at. This is my first mosaic, so apologies if it doesn't work.

    mosaic16zj.jpg
    mosaic20or.jpg

    The LCD was Troy's business heart for centuries, and has thrived since the Middle Ages. Now, it's somewhat quieter and has become more of a tourist destination than an economic powerhouse.

    Wooden Horse Square, Which is where we left the last tour, dominated by the Grand Trojan Hotel:

    woodenhorsesquare5kb.jpg

    You can see the start of the Grand Canal next to the square - the Grand Canal acts as a historic spine for the whole city.

    The Law Courts, overlooking the canal:

    lawcourts5ad.jpg

    The Winter Gardens:

    wintergardens0kt.jpg

    The N3 Expressway penetrates the historic core - it was a controversial project to say the least!

    express12mj.jpg

    express25za.jpg

    The Grand Canal and National Exchange, the precursor to the TroNax stock exchange:

    grandcanalandexchange4xr.jpg

    St Mark's, the Protestant cathedral:

    protestantcathedral3lk.jpg

    The Old Schools, Troy's ancient university:

    theoldschools6fh.jpg

    The Orthodox Cathedral:

    orthocathedral5uh.jpg

    orthocathedral25sx.jpg

    The Opera House:

    operahouse4dk.jpg

    Customs buildings and merchants' places on the Canal:

    customshouses6gg.jpg

    Canal Street Station (one of the city's busiest and most important, despite not being the official main station):

    That's all for now.

    That's rather nice! I like the way you successfully mixed building styles. Just one suggestion for the future : take your pictures so that we see cars, pedestrians, etc. on them. Otherwise, the city looks dead.

    Beautiful once again. My only suggestions would be to use as few bridges as possible to carry the traffic without congestion and to consider whether the canal system should just have two locks (one upstream and one downstream). But the placement and selection of buildings is just perfect. Love it. heart.gif

    Great work with the kanals. I just would try to avoid so much RR crossing. Try tpo make some road overpasses (never let railway go up and down for a road!) or use the NAM's elevated road resp. build RR on a dam.

    Despite of that: Great work!
