Is it possible to create a new road type and add it to the list of roads as an asset, rather than a whole collection of new roads like some mods?

What I'm looking for mainly is just one or two new types of roads. I'd like a two-lane, two-way road with no parking on the side and no markings, like what you see in any typical residential neighborhood. And the other I'd like to see is a two-lane, two-way road with no curbs (similar to the dirt road) and only arrows making direction, for use in parking lots and for better creation of shopping centers.

Is any of this possible?

There are new 1-tile roads in NExt mod.

Traffic++ provides them, without arrows though.

There's no such thing as a road template, so in short, the answer is no. Any new roads have to be modded in and require coding for their lane setup, netinfo, props etc. It's also not very straightforward, not as simple as adding one model.

    Thanks for the replies.

That's a shame. The reason I asked is because I avoid mods like T++ like the plague. They're buggy, they constantly destroy saves, and they have massive incompatibility issues anytime there's a new patch or update. Not to mention T++ in particular will bring most computers to a standstill.

I just want a couple new road types without having to worry about breaking my saves or dreading the next update.

Network Extensions has a small road with no white markings (not sure about parking) and you can just disable the roads you aren't gonna use.

I've been seeing GC_Vos thread for Network Extensions, and it's very active. I really enjoy his work. His parking garages are a lifesaver.

But I don't really understand what the purpose and function of NE is. Admittedly I just skimmed the first post, but it wasn't clear what it was supposed to do. Is there a short answer to what functionality it's supposed to add?

Hehe everybody seems to enjoy those garages. :)

Well NExt does what you were asking about, it adds new roads types, as well as a few related tools. Right now I think there's 14 new ones, and more being added with almost every update. If you're looking for another way to add new roads I'm sorry to say there isn't any. Like Avanya said it's possible to only enable those you want to use.

Related and not mutually exclusive would be what Boformer is working on with Network Skins. I believe the last stage would be to have customizable road textures for each segment, similarly to how you can already change street lights and pillars. But I think that's much more down the line (perhaps Boformer can comment on this).

Those new roads in NEXT make the game much more enjoyable. The highlights:

    1. National roads, a two-lane two-way highway. It's great for rural areas, but it also takes the tooth out of many traffic problems within cities.

    2. Four-lane roads as wide as the game's two-lane roads. That makes for easy upgrading in squeezed city situations without having to destroy any buildings. Also, they don't produce traffic lights.

    3. A 4-lane two-way avenue with turning lanes in the center. Those left-turn vehicles finally don't block all traffic anymore. As icing on the cake: they don't produce traffic lights (the game's handling of traffic lights is just stupid).

    4. One cell wide alleys! For those tight old city quarters.

Also if you use the game's three-lane highways alternating with NEXT's 4-lane highways around road junctions to your highway system, traffic flow becomes much better. Ironically, constructs like that don't work well in real life, as human drivers always switch too late, but it's perfect for CO's dumb traffic AI.

As a result, you don't really need any mods like Traffic++ anymore, as those road types allow you to work much better with the game's original traffic AI. Highly recommended!

I've seen a lot of those new road types in some YouTuber's videos and I always marvel at them. I wish CO would just add some other roads to the vanilla game. I know it stumps everyone, but why a 2-lane one-way, then jump straight to a 6-lane one-way? What happened to the 4-lane one-way? I'm very tempted to sub NE if for nothing else, the one cell roads.

I think Boformer's Network Skins was where part of the confusion came in. I can't keep track of what some of these really high-level mods are doing, and since they were both called Network Something, I was lost.

Thank you both for the help and clarification. And yes, your parking garages are awesome. I almost jumped for joy when I first found the first one you made. Surprisingly, no one has really stepped up and made any others. Parking garages are such a no-brainer in all big cities across the world.

    Thanks again.
