As a scientist, I'm quite skeptical about ghosts or other hollow creatures. Since I'm trying to look at reality objectively, I would say that there are so many things that's science can't explain everything and never will.  I've seen thing beyond my imagination in Africa... So I'm in the center: not sure.

I do believe in ghost, I also watch the show were they try to video tape them. Which I pretty cool and sometimes funny how they really freak out. All I know is I leave a light on during the show since it starts at 8PM.

I believe in the Supernatural World and I also believe in the idea that there are parts of Natural World that can go potentially completely way over our ability to comprehend, such as the String Theory for example (if that is real).

However, I don't know to what extent the supernatural intervenes in today's world since most accounts tend to be highly subjective, hard to quantify, communicate, and hard to come to common ground on.  I believe that I feel and see the work of Deity around me and have generalized instructions of what's expected of me; and I'm not going to tell someone else that they did or do not experience what they say they've experienced.    I personally haven't seen evidence that the spirits of people who have left their shells (physical bodies) spend time here on Earth and I don't see evidence that Deity states that ghosts as such exist today.  But again, since I was not there, I wouldn't presume to tell you how to specifically interpret what  you saw, heard, or felt.

i live in a 170-year-old house which supposedly is built atop an Indian burial ground - i'd think living in this vortex of the deceased would result in something. flying chairs. bending spoons. computer making strange posts by itself.
so far, i've seen, heard, felt nor sensed nothing out of the ordinary.

i think i'm a bit too analytical to believe in ghosts. but i've also been one who believes that much which is considered supernature is only natural. for instance, we are now finding the giant beasties sailors many years ago told of, and few believed, do in fact exist (giant squids).

That's about the way that I feel about it.  I can't prove any of it right or wrong.  I have heard of and seen pictures of really freaky things that I couldn't explain in the least.  I do believe that there is some sort of supernatural force at work in the world.  For example: I believe that MrC's computer has some sort of psychic power that forced MrC to sit down and compose that post above me.3.gif9.gif  Just in case someone out there didn't figure it out, I'm joking!44.gif

MsD, I'm not exactly sure what to say about your experience except that it should have happened before you had to have surgery.  The bacteria in your shoulder would have been so scared  from that, they would have run out of your shoulder screaming GET US OUT OF HERE!6.gif

Since JoeSock said all the good stuff already, I'll just agree with that and say; Great answer Joe!

My answer is most definitely yes,....and most definitely no.

Ghosts are defined incorrectly, mis-interpreted, their nature is confused by our personal POV's and reasonings.

Per my 144 page manuscript and counting; Ghosts are spirits and not one that may exist, is a good one. 'Nuff said, for now.

I'm not sure if that was a ghost or not.
I, myself, believe in gosts because I've seen one and because my dad had an encounter with one when he was in University.
Once, in our old local theater, we were packing up after a show, me and my dad were on the lights, and so we were last to leave because we had to set everything back to default, take down the filters etc.
Anyway, I was up in the box reading, when I looked up and saw this...misty image of a woman floating on the balcony. Then, suddenly, the misty image thing sort of screamed down from the balcony, into my dad's ladder, and through the stage floor.
After I had calmed down, my dad and I found out that over a hundred years ago, I woman had commited suicide by jumping from the balcony, in the exact same place where I saw the misty image.

When my dad was in University, all the first years had to sleep in a Hall Of Residence. One night, my dad was coming down from the girls domatery (20.gif) and was climbing down the stairs when he looked over and he saw a woman in victorian dress standing in a fire alcove. The woman proceeded to move towards my dad, and pass straight through him. Apparently, my dad felt as if a cold hand hand had suddenly touched is whole body.
Then, a few years ago, he went on the website for the Hall Of Residence he stayed in, and looked at it, and he saw that other people had seen this woman and that the Hall was meant to be haunted.

Oh, and here is my list of things I believe, dont believe in.

Ghosts: Yes
Aliens: Definately.
Heaven/Hell: Maybe. Not hell, but I believe there is a higher existance that we go to when we die.
Reincarnation: Not really.
God: Yes, the Universe is far to fine-tuned to be natural. Something made it. Wether it was a god, or a highly advanced being, I dont know. But, I believe that this being that created the Universe does not take part in ANYTHING. He/She/It is only a passive observer.
Parallel Universes: Yes. Of course there is. There is an infinite number of Universes created everytime anything does anything.
Government Conspiracies: Yes. I believe in the 50. (50 people who know EXACTLY what is going on in the world, why, how and where.

Here are my thoughts:

If you think about it carefully, no such ghosts are possible, rather the thought of being in a situation one is rather an illusion your mind is playing. And some very sensible experiences, such as MsD's, it's best left to be unanswered. We can't let ourselves live in denial because of something that we can't explain, can we? Just live life as it is.

Now, Aliens, I'd say it more as another humanoid species that thinks the same way we do. They might think that they are the only species alive in their galaxy, but they wonder about us, and vice versa. Same goes with a parallel universe.

Reincarnation is something I do believe in. After udnerstanding several religions, karma is what makes us reincarnate in a specific way.

God, yes I do believe in one, whatever anyone calls God. I do believe in it as in he created us. 2.gif

Secret Governemnts is one thing I am particularly curious about. Yes, a lot of governments, such as Russia's, U.S.A's, British, all have some what you'd call Secret, but all they are doing is trying to test things and work on things that they believe should be kept hidden from public view, may it be the fact that they might be criticized or other things.

Last thing, UFOs. Now, the way we think of it is some weird spacecraft above us is spying on us. The way I think of it, secret government bases are conducting researches on a new kind of aircraft, that would be speedy, quick, and stealthy, rather our loud, huge, bulky planes/jets.

Wow....I think I went a lil' wee bit overboard in explanation, eh? 18.gif

I don't believe in ghosts as most people define them:  lingering spirits of the dead haunting a house or something else, often wanting control of the place.  I do however, believe in evil spirits as they are somewhat different and more plausible than the common place ideas of ghosts.

I can't say I believe in them and yet, at the same time, I also can't deny their existence altogether. I just don't know because I haven't seen one.

Now, what I do know is that most humans (including me) have an instinctual fear of the dark. We are by nature afraid of the unknown. I know I will not venture down any dark hallways or though a totally dark room, I don't care how old the house is; something in my head says turn the light on room by room. Ghosts: Yes.  A ghost just someone who went out of body, hasn't gone back, and hasn't moved on yet.
Aliens: Yes.  We can't be the only intelligent beings in the universe.
Heaven/Hell: Yes, but not in the traditional sense.
Reincarnation:  Yes.  Been there, done that.
God:  Yes, but, again, not in the traditional sense.
Parallel Universes:  The little evidence I've seen points to yes.
Government Conspiracies:  Yes.  They are doing a lot they aren't telling us.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

    My list:

Ghosts: No, as in my first post
Aliens: Yes, the universe it too large for this to be the only place with life. And with life, eventually they become intelligent.
Heaven/Hell: Hell no. 5.gif Spending eternity doing just whatever would get old REALLY fast. So I guess my answer is more like, Please no, that would be horrible
    Reincarnation: No
God: Obviously if there is a god, he/she/it does not intervene in any good way, so what does he/she/it do? Sounds lame.
    Parallel Universes: Sorta
Government Conspiracies: Definitely. If you dont think so you are insane.

Ghosts: Yes, but not the kind that haunt houses and try to scare you.
Aliens: There has to be, I mean come on.
Heaven/Hell: Yes, but it is not like what we think it is.
    Reincarnation: No
God: Yes, but in a different way.
    Parallel Universes: Not sure.
Government Conspiracies: Of course, haven't you heard of the time machine?

That pretty much sums up what I believe...

Yes, that is how I feel as well. There are just some parts of this world that we don't know about... of course. Just to say ghost is too general. Now if you said something in specific like demonic spirits, then I would still say I'm not sure. It's too complex just to say no or yes. And yes, this is a great poll, MsD!

Partly, I think that Truckin_Papa set you up. The very suggestion of paranormal phenomena can cause the experience. On the other hand, psychosomatic pain is just a real as physically caused pain, so I guess the jury remains out on ghosts, revantants and other spiritual manifestations.

If you want to experience an interesting Opera, you might try to find a video or live performance of Gian-Carlo Menotti's The Medium.

Menotti is better known for Amahl and the Night Visitors which is likely to be seen on TV anytime now, since it is a Christmas tear-jerker.

    Ok here is my list.

    Ghosts: Definatley

    Aliens: Tottaly

    Heaven/Hell: Absolutley

    God: Duh! Yes!

    Parell Universes: Sorta

    Secret Government Conspiracies: Some

    Here is my story:

WE just moved into this 142 year old house, built during the war. Me, my brother, and sister were pretending we were one on of those shows where they have to go into a haunted house and what not. We had no idea our house was haunted. This is the story of why we call the closet at the end of the hall, THE HAUNTED CLOSET...

We had all the lights off, and we were heading into the closet at the end of the hall. We opened the door and closed it. We acted as if we were all scared out of our wits. Then, the door knob stated to turn! (This is the part where we weren't pretending) The door flung open! WE screamed at the top of our lungs and ran out the door. None of us slept that night. They're have been other happenings in that closet where we acttualy see things. Now, when you walk down that hallway, you get that feeling in your stomach....

Here is another thing about my house. Our garage is made of wood like the floor is made of wood. If you lift up the floor boards wich is very easy to do, there are things on the bottom. One thing that really stands out is a rope. When you lift that up,  you get a very eery feeling.

If you want more feel free to PM me.

I wasn't sure if I should respond to this or not but, in spite of my better judgement, decided to.  There are unexplained paranormal phenomenon and although I try to keep an open mind about it I've yet to see or hear any real proof in my 62 years of life.  That may simply be because science has yet to accurately measure and define it.  Hundreds of years ago people believed the earth was flat.  That's a poor example but I'm tired right now.  The idea being that a lot of what we know and believe changes in time as our knowledge expands.  Someday we may have definitive answers to the question of ghosts but right now we don't.  Personally, I don't believe in them but your mileage may differ. 10.gif

I would have said that I personally do not believe in ghosts but that there was much that is not understood yet by science, and that perhaps one day ghosts would be able to be explained by science either as a previously unknown force of nature or a natural occurance within the human mind.

That was until a few years ago, when I had an experience that made me reconsider.

I woke just before dawn one night and saw my grandmother standing at the foot of my bed. It was still dark, but she was clearly lit, as if by moonlight. She was speaking to me but I couldn't hear what she was saying. I looked at the clock which was behind her on the shelf and it was 4:18 am.

I am ashamed to say that at this point I think I fell asleep again, because I don't remember what happened after that.

My parents told me in the morning that the nursing home had phoned them at about 4:30. My grandmother had passed away at 4:19.

I don't know if this was a genuine visitation. But I believe that if ghosts are indeed possible, that my grandmother had the love and strength of will to visit me as one for a short time so she could say goodbye.

All to often our loved ones leave without us having the chance to say goodbye. This time, one way or another, I was given that chance, and to this day I regret I did not make very good use of it.

I still don't really believe in ghosts, but I would not say they definately don't exist.

I definatly believe in ghosts, that they are people that dont know they are dead. I dont believe a ghost can harm a living person. Also I believe there are spirits, people who have died and know they are dead, but just coming around for a visit. Also,

Aliens: yes, they are probebly shocked how we treat our planet when they come around

Heaven: yes, but no angels with wings and harps. I believe there are different levels of heaven, and if you did bad things while you were alive, you work your way up, to sort of a higher level.

    Hell: no

Reincarnation: yes. I dont want to come back here anymore.

    God: yes

I have never seen a ghost, but one of my bosses died in February, and about a week later, I was working at like 3am when nobody else is around, and suddenly a boom box/portable radio turned on all by itself. Then the volume turned way up by itself. Then it turned off. This has been happening occationaly since he died. The radio was moved to only a few feet from where i work, and its always the middle of the night. Definatly nobody around. Mabye he is saying hi, i dont know.
