Duke, I believe that the building you're referring to that had a gash cut in it is called the Deutsche Bank Building. It's officially scheduled to be deconstructed and will become the tallest building to ever be voluntarily demolished (the tallest ever, of course, being the WTC).

Well, I have heard mostly comments about disliking the building.  I do agree about disliking the first proposal by Limbwhateva.

People talked about rebuilding or not.  So they compromised.  They are rebuilding, and they are giving you your parks and memorials.  And now they are incorporating a memorial out of the building itself.

Look at it, doesnt it remind you of the WTC towers?  Its just as tall!  However, we are moving towards the future... hence the cut out pieces!  Something to resemble the old into the new!  Have any of you thought of this?  Compromise?!

On the design itself:  I believe it does contribute to what it is supposed to.  Right now you may not like the design. But think... did you like the WTC when they were there?  The answer then was NO!  Now, its a no, but look at the skyline... whats missing?  You will only have one answer!  You miss it, and they are trying to satisfy 290 million people.

I agree about the fear aspect of it all, however, is 30 feet that much?  Not in my mind.  A fortress, maybe up close... But stand back and look... I see a building.

I also want to ask if any of you have been to Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill's page and have seen the videos of the tower?  If so, wasn't that a beautiful sight seeing what that anteana did?  Imagine that night sky lighting up into a million stars.  To me it was breath taking, and if done, it would be one landmark within our lifetimes that would structure this land.

Heres that link to thier site.  Please take a look!  http://http://www.som.com/opener.cfm

Just Click on launch site... then to Projects, Supertall, then Freedom Tower, then look under vidoes.  There are at about 7 to view.  Please note... High speed internet is recommended for viewing the videos!

I love this thread and largely agree with the consensus. If we must build the new design, then This new design would be better as shorter twin towers, about half the height, and no spire on top. Scrap the stone fortress, its rediculous.

But, Trump's idea is excellent as well. I personally do not care which they build, but one rediculously high tower would mar the skyline, photo-takers the world over will need to pan up, introducing way too much head room for the rest of the city.

The Tallest Building is rediculous and childish.

Two towers baby, about 110 stories (maybe 111).

But what can we do to make our thoughts heard? Is there already an organization working to get a plan such as we want implemented?

Maybe in the future they will renovate the outside to de-fortresize it.

imo, having the worlds tallest building is cool, but nowadays the tallest building is so big that I wouldn't want it in my city (I don't live in NYC, btw) or anywhere near me. The traffic congestion from so many people working there, the shadow it casts (maybe that's why it's triangular? to make the shadow smaller?) it makes everything else in the skyline look smaller, and the construction restraints for being so tall means that it's going to be a big sheet of glass.

I do actually like the new design althougth I think it could be better. I agree with the idea of putting a park in, green area's are key part of good urbanism (remember SimCity).

I also think some people here need to show a little respect for the victims of 9/11 and understand that scrapping the memorial and forgeting about the disaster is not going to happen.

There was a idea just to rebuild the World Trade Center in its original form with a memorial garden. I like this idea too but will the survivors and there close relatives of 9/11 ever be able to work there again?

As much as I don't like Donald Trumps' combover... I pretty much support his idea to rebuild the World Trade Center with the added floor. In my opinion, I sort of like the old Twin Towers, they were simple in design. I agree, 'Freedom' Tower is a bad name, please don't blow your lungs out yelling at me for this comment. But, I think of America as the Teen, rebellious, My Way or The Highway, I'm Right, Your Wrong kind of attitude which is annoying and with 'Freedom' Tower just sort of a show off.

No matter what the new building is and what's name is, it will always be the World Trade Center

Flanig307, this is not about patriotism or american pride, but how we will compensate for the lost business and jobs that were housed in the old towers. If people were to build a memorial there with no real estate, just hink about the losses. In time, people will come to think of this event as in the past. IF you think about it, Pearl Harbor was a monumental event with around the same losses as 9/11. A question, Do you think as strongly of Pearly harbor as you do of 9/11?

I don't understand what everyone's problem is with calling it the Freedom Tower.  How is it a juvenile cliche or an arrogant proclaimation?  Is freedom not what this country is built on?

Or what about the fact that it'll be exactly 1776 feet tall?  I think its a smart, honorable height that signifies the year our country was founded.  I don't get what all the hub-bub is about.22.gif

Calling it the Freedom Tower is just one of those names that is a morale and confidence booster to Americans. And it is one of those Bush subliminal messages saying kill the terrorists. Why don't they name is something like the Silver Tower or the New York Trade center. These may be crappy, but they are a start and a lot better than the Freedom Tower

I have never really thought about the name. I think the name Freedom Tower is fine and doubt it is delivering a serious political message. I mean freedom basically means libertey and I have seen few people complain on the naming of the Statue of Libertey.

The reason Freedom Tower is so ridiculous is because it's totally inappropriate for what is being built. The new tower will not represent freedom---IT'S A COMMERCIAL OFFICE BUILDING!. It will represent American capitalism, which, while certainly impossible without a lot of economic freedom, is not the same as honest-to-goodness social and political freedom, which it is named for.

It's the equivalent of me naming my car the Freedom Scion or my girlfriend's hair dryer the Freedom Blower. Social and political freedom has nothing to do with giant office towers built by billionaire investors as an eff-you to Islamic jihadists.

Those who most loudly espouse the name Freedom Tower are those most opposed to freedom---the Christian and Jewish religious extremists among us. If Osama Bin Laden built a skyscraper and named it The Jihad Tower, it would be pretty similar.

The fact is, the word Freedom has become a cliche for everything President Bush and social conservatives want to do. It has been skewed to mean American imperialism and economic domination---which I must admit the tower DEFINITELY represents.

And besides, if they have to name a building Freedom anything, chances are they're more concerned with the word itself than actually ensuring that all of our citizens are really free.

I'm like most Americans in that I'm already proud of my country's history (at least most of it), and glad to be living in such a land of excess where I can type on the computer just about any thought that comes to mind. My dignity and pride do not rely on superficial gestures like naming every new thing Freedom this and Freedom that. I'm not so insecure (or afraid of Islamic jihadists) that I need constant physical reminders of where I live or what my history is. Save the grand titles for actual monuments like the Statue Of Liberty or The Liberty Bell---not office buildings constructed by billionaire investors strictly for profit.

Again, sorry for the length, but people keep asking for it.

The reason Freedom Tower is a good name IMO is that they took the WTC down, and we're putting something up that represents that we are still free, regardless of what those who would want that taken away from us.

You and others opposed to the name keep bringing politics into this as if Bush specifically named it Freedom Tower.  It was a vote, it wasn't some political conspiracy to somehow get Americans to believe that what we're doing in Iraq is right or anything else like that.

I speak loudly for the name of the tower, and I'm not a religious extremist OR a social conservative.  I vote democratic, but I don't consider myself a democrat or republican.

Get over the fact that the Freedom Tower will be a symbol of our freedom and a monument to those who died in the terrible WTC terrorist attack.  It symbolizes America's freedom, economic prosperity, and resiliency to let others know that we will not be afraid or let terrorism change our way of life.

Politics shouldn't have anything to do with this.

Guys, do you think the people who are building the Freedom Tower are going to come to Simtropolis. Then come to this thread. See these 16 people's or so replies and then they are going to change the name of the Freedom Tower which will cost them millions of dollars because they have to change the name of every advertisement and every article or w/e they have done. Let's just keep it Freedom Tower and be on with it.

And FreewayofFlight.... your post disgust me... Singapore shows their power by building the once tallest skyscaper, then Taipei 101 is built for their country, and yet we can't build our own tall skyscaper to show our freedom, power, and strength?? Yeah, it doesn't quite make sense young'n. It's the American spirit (I guess you would call it) to be the best (even though we haven't been the best lately, like Katrina and all that). Are you saying being the best is bad, and that we should be aiming to be the worst? Yeah, doesn't make sense!

If we're so unchanged by it, then why are we naming the building that? Freedom Tower is overcompensating. And as Louisville327 pointed out, the building doesn't represent any of the things you listed.

I agree with everything FreewayofFlight and Louisville327 have said.

I'm Canadian, I love American cities, but I'm sick of hearing your pointless babble about 'freedom'. Freedom this, freedom that, your patriotic nonsense has blown way out of hand. To say that the terrorists strike because they don't want you to be free is a load of crap. If they were concerned with freedom, they'd be running around your streets taking hostages or turning you into slaves. So it's alright for you to go and blow up foreign countries for no good reason (they pissed us off! Time to teach them a lesson!), but when someone comes along to do the same to you, and you scream at them for attacking/hating your 'freedom'? Please.......applying that to all forms of attack, would you not be doing the same to those who are bombed by you?

This new building will certainly stand as a monument, but not for 'freedom.' How can it? Are you more 'free' than the rest of the world to build such a tower? America's freedom is hardly different from Canada's. Stop acting like you're the only country that builds its society on freedom. It's a right that all of humanity is entitled to. Stop viewing things in terms of America, and start thinking in terms of the whole world. Why not build something that stands for all of humanity? There can be no greater accomplishment than that. You want America to better itself? There's how you do it.

'It symbolizes America's freedom, economic prosperity, and resiliency to let others know that we will not be afraid or let terrorism change our way of life.' --what have a lot of you people mentioned? Oh yeah, I remember, building taller buildings is just like placing targets on every person or all over that building. Well, your way of life before was reaching for new heights in terms of building construction, and now, wouldn't you say that higher buildings in the U.S. are somewhat limited since 9/11? The original design for the Freedom Tower was changed because of terrorism concern! Everytime I discuss the designs for taller building proposals, one of the first things I hear are 'that'll be one hell of a terrorist target'.....get over it. How often to terrorist bombings of skyscrapers occur? Why hasn't the Sears Tower been smashed yet?

The actual building design itself is fine, except for, as some of you have mentioned, that pointless concrete slab at the bottom of the tower. Giving New York another twin tower skyline would have been nice too, and rebuilding the original design is also a damn fine idea.

Personally, the old WTC design is actually one of my favorites. It was not only practical, but very tough to bring down, and beautiful in a simple way. The core of the building would have stood had the fire retardant withstood the hugh explosion. The square effect was stunningly attractive, and a big hit with the port authority because of its practicality (is that a word?) A similar building would be fun to see.

The new Freedom Tower is far too tall and the color matches nothing! Make use of the width of the space and building several buildings instead, that's what I say.

Nothing will ever be able to replace the WTC. The new design is much better than the old one, however. The old one looked like a shadow of a tower, and I hated the bird cage at the top. This design is more what I wanted to see, a single, unified tower rising triumphantly from the ashes. I would like it more if the tower's height was 1776 ft, and the antenna brought it to 2001 ft, though.

In my honest opinion, a building is a building - simple as that, but what makes it so special is what it's doing and who is working in it.  Naming a building 'Freedom Tower' doesn't do anything for the survivors of the terror attacks, what helps them is that little memorial park and the human feeling of:

You attacked our hearts, you'll leave a memory forever, but you WONT bring us down.

Build the building, leave the park or the memorial, but don't get over-active over something as little and igsignificant as a name.  Plus, don't start worrying about it being too tall and an 'ideal target' for a terrorist attack - what the hell is that about? America is a powerful nation - not a weak diversity that has to abide by terrorist laws!

    Sheesh...
