Few custom region map related questions

Hi,

Here I am back again :)

OK, I followed these 2 tutorials for making custom region. I used Photoshop for the grayscale and paint for the config image.

https://www.simtropolis.com/omnibus/_/simcity-4/mapping-and-terraforming/configbmp-how-to-make-it-yours-r76

http://www.sc4ever.com/knowledge/showarticle.cfm?id=1103

1) So I made a 9(w) X 7(h) pixels config image and its grayscale size is 577 by 449 pixels.

But when I try to render it in SC4, it gives the following error:

Region gen. error

Region bitmap size is incorrect - 577x549. Should be 1025x1025.

2) I made another region, whose config.bmp size is 16x16 and its grayscale size is 1025 by 1025 pixels.

The color of config image is all blue ... But on render, it comes as a mix of all large, mid and small size cities.

So what I am doing wrong both in 1st case and in 2nd case?

Thank you

I would suggest to use the SC4Mapper. Here you can import a greyscale and also you are able to customize the config. Then everything should work fine.

That includes another learning curve and I really don't know how to use that. I am just thinking that why mine is going wrong.

Nah, doesn´t require anything else than SC4Mapper. Start the program, choose the greyscale option, and - after loading your region will be displayed. Then there is a bar, where you´ll find the ability to change the config. This is very useful, as you can SEE, what you are doing, means, you can have the borders, where they fit best.

It is really the easy way to get a region to your likes.

    Mapper/Terraformer both require Python.

OK, so here's what you probably did incorrectly:

The gray-scale map must be black and white.  You may have stored it as the default RGB.

The gray-scale map must be larger by one pixel in each direction than indicated by the config.bmp

The config.bmp must be an RGB file in BMP format and must be a parallelepiped.

If you want to do visual repairs on your existing files try reading them into the Read the help files and you'll discover how easy it is to do this.  One of the advantages of LD is that it will generate your config.bmp file.

sorry eufl, My logic is not getting cleared.

    Mr. Moose :)

My gray-scale map is black and white and is in grayscale mode.

    if my config.bmp is 9(w) X 7(h) then width of  grayscale ... 9x64+1 = 577 is correct... right?

    what you mean by parallelepiped

Each pixel on a config.bmp file can be represented by:

    Small: 1x1 (255,0,0)
    Medium: 2x2 (0,255,0)
    Large: 4x4 (0,0,255)

The bigger the width / height, the larger the region will become. Remember in total, the area must be filled up with a combination of these red, green or blue coloured pixels, each at 255 RGB for the game to recognise the layout. At 9x7 using all blue pixels, the problem is there are unallocated areas on the right and at the bottom:

    config_bmp_test.png

Notice how the blue areas can form into two blocks of 4x4, but the remaining pixels have nowhere to go (and they can't form into another 4x4 block).

It's also important that the size of the config.bmp is proportional to the region's size. To determine this manually, two simple calculations can be done. One to find the region size and another for the config.bmp. Take a read through this article for more info.

Using an editor is a simplified way to do this, such the one included with SC4 Mapper 2013.

Sorry, left out the word rectilinear, and of course, it has to be a 2D orthogonal projection.  I think the degenerate case is called a rectangle.

Anyway, I hope you took a look at the Landscape Designer.  It can not only generate maps but edit own-code ones.
