Why do you play Wargames?

Why do you play wargames? What exactly you like about them? What game had the most significant effect on you and your emotional ties to your character(s)? In other words what wargame really had you caring about the pretend soldier or men? (emotional ties) You know the ones you really hated to lose? Why are war games fun to play?

For me the strongest emotional ties to heroes are from Panzer Command and Combat Mission games, X-Com. War games are a way to relieve stress and to train some skills.

Well, I don't generally play war games.  I am a child of WW II, and I strongly believe that war is the art of both sides losing.  One side may be physically defeated, but the other side will be bankrupt, so where's the victory in that?  War is the utter failure of diplomacy.

Well A Nonny, I don't want this to be a debate but there is actually a third party winner after all war is business. Just calculate all the expenditures for a war and imagine who gets them. Although, you are apparently correct in saying that war is a failure of diplomacy but then again good words alone will not change the world.

Anyway, I do play war games but not much. A few old games such as Warcraft, Red Alert (anybody should know this. :P), Generals, Battle Realms and Rise of Nations. I doesn't play often anymore though as I do before. Perhaps I might try Age of Empires soon but honestly, I can't find another interesting new strategy game now. Any suggestions from the others?

I usually play them for fun and that's its all about. I'd rather solve sudoku or play chess if I want to become a real strategist but defeating a tough computer can be fulfilling sometimes.

I like the Wargame series.

Wargame:EE has a great (and ridiculously hard) campaign, and the others have a little bit easier Multiplayer. Very heavy emphasis on real-life tactics in many cases, which is neat as well.

I'm not very good at them, but they're great for some minor stress relief and are not too expensive (I paid $2 for EE and $7 for Wagame:ALB). They also look amazing even on mediocre hardware like mine, so it's great for casual gamers.

I drove accross the USA from San Francisco to New York at NFS: The Run.

I tuned cars to the extreme in NFS: Underground.

I became the ruler of an entire continent in Medieval Total War.

I did the Kickflip McTwist at Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.

I did a hole in one at Sid Meier's SimGolf.

I mastered the art of rallying at Colin McRae Rally 3.

I built the resort of my dreams at Beach Life.

I put a railroad on any dead man's town all over the world in Railroad Tycoon II.

I drove at full speed a locomotive DB Class 101 at Railworks 3.

I took down the Nazi plans to develop the atomic bomb at Commandos: Behind the Enemy Lines.

I developed the videogames of our dreams at Game Dev Tycoon.

I stole Queen Elisabeth's crown at Traitor's Gate.

I reached Alpha Centauri at Civilization II.

I kicked Robotnik's butt at Sonic the Hedgehog.

I broke my rival's ribs at Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe.

I touched the glory with my own hands at PES.

I scored a touchdown on a Hail Mary play at Madden.

I drove a Formula One Ferrari below the checkered flag.

I defeated Ogre at Tekken.

I drove my car all over Nice, France to kill a guy at Driver.

I built the home I would like to live in at The Sims.

I killed my enemies one by one with a Dragunov sniper rifle at CoD: Black Ops.

Videogames allow me to be somebody that I can't be in real life, including an elite soldier or a commander in wargames.

Well, I do play games, but most of them are logic games such as reversi, or if I am feeling masochistic chess or go.

I have one fantasy game based on LOTR (actually a prequel) where I get to chase all kinds of monsters around a 100 level dungeon.  To win this one you have to destroy Morgoth who is Sauron's mentor.  He hangs on level 100.  It is available for several machines, but some of the implementations are terrible.  The game is called Angband.  Really for geeks only.  It is turn based, and runs nicely on Linux.

Actually, anything that requires hand-eye coordination is out for me.  I just don't have it any more.  However, anyone can get Angband.  This link gets you to various versions including the source code.  I use the SDL version which has playing card type graphics.

If you are not a console type you would want the GUI version using SDL or better.  Most people will think this is old hat, but Rogue (which I also have) was designed to run on UNIX back in the 1970s as a CRT text game.  Angband is a couple of rows of Christmas trees better than Rogue.  And Rogue is similarly better than Adventure (written in FORTRAN) that plays in pure text.  One of the best things I ever got at a computer conference was a colour map of the Adventure dungeon.  In those days, colour printers used wax.

Modern all-on graphics simulations are just too much for my tired old self to hold my interest for long.  Presently I am a level 38 Paladin getting killed regularly on dungeon level 60.  Characters are limited to level 50, and by that time you should be able to kill Morgoth, somehow, when you get to level 100 of the dungeon.  Here is a current screenie:

As you can see it is a D&D old-time game.  Not very exciting for the players of such things as GTA, but everyone to his taste.

Oh dear, I though this was limited to games wherein you control nations or a colony at least but just an addendum, I have also played Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Black Ops and my all time favorite, Syphon Filter (well this isn't actually a war but its still killing people) in Playstation. Oh I almost forgot, Company of Heroes is also a good game.

Thanks for the list btw, Sart.

What do you think about games with some extra violence and too much blood?

What is 'extra' violent?  What is too much blood (the body only has about six litres).

When I was a younger lad all we had video game wise was an Atari 2600. Not too many war games with that particular console so as odd as it sounds we use to go outside and play war with toy guns and everything. We also still played board games so Stratigo was fun as was Axis and Allies and my personal favorite, Fortress America. Awe to be young again.

Does Fire Emblem count?  It's medieval fantasy warfare, but still virtual warfare.

As for mainstream war games, FPS games aren't my cup of tea, but I've played some.
