LK and Gobias terrain mods cause CTD upon city start?

I've been drooling over the lovely Sudden Valley, Appalachian, and Berner Oberland terrain mods, but I can't get cities to start whenever they're installed. I can work for as long as I want in terraform mode, but the moment I hit F2 and try to start a new city, the rainbow wheel of death pops up.

Why is this? I'm correctly set to Hardware Rendering, and the rest of the advice I find has to do with CPU cores, which at this point is out of my league.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think the Aspyr port supports anything HD. You'll have to stick to standard definition terrain/water mods.

Thanks! So that would be any of CP's... any others you'd recommend? I'd like a snowcapped, but I don't like the bright greens of CP's.

This issue is almost certainly caused by an [exemplar encoding issue] known to cause problems with the Mac port of the game.

If you encounter any plugins that are affected by this problem, I suggest to try to fix it yourself using the Reader, or otherwise contact the author of the plugin to ask for a fix, referring to the information in the SC4 Wiki. In that case, be sure you have identified the right plugin file.

might be something for you. Or The one I have used most heavily (I share your dislike for utopian lush green all around ;) ) is

Oooh, thanks for reminding me of those. I saw them years ago when I first discovered ST, but had forgotten. They look promising!

There isn't--I don't believe there's an equivalent that runs on OS X, either, at present.  If you wanted to run it on a Mac, you'd need to do a dual-boot with Windows, or use something like Wineskin.

I have Wine and use it to run those silly installers so many mods come with. Can I run the Reader under Wine as well?

I don't know of anyone who has even attempted to run the Reader under Wine, so I can't say for certain if it'll work.  I'd say it'd be worth giving a try--it'd open the doors to content creation for a lot of Mac users if it did run.

The Reader can indeed be run in Wine quite easily (see for example ). It seems to be a bit slower than on Windows and there are a few other limitations, but it works and I haven't booted my Windows system in weeks.

I have seemingly fixed this issue by making the needed changes to the exemplars.  If I have permission from Gobias, I'd be happy to upload the fixed files.  I also got the Reader to work in Wine.  Not sure if Wine'd apps can be shared and work across different computers?  But I'd be happy to share that too if it would work.

I'm not sure Gobias is still around to answer your request. I made a mod to add the terrain grass onto the transport networks and made a similar request half a year ago with no response.

That said, since you can create an override with only the required exemplars modified without fear, you could at least upload/attach a fix to the forums for Mac users. Simply isolate the exemplars you changed in the reader and copy/paste them into a new DAT. Prefix this file with "z_" (underscore) and place it in the same folder as the files you need to override. It should load after the main DATs with the terrain exemplars and thus override the settings. If not, try adding some more underscores until it does. Such a file would be perfectly suitable for uploading as your work.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.
