Lot Editor w/ Aspyr re-release

I'm looking to install the Lot Editor via Wine and I keep receiving the error "Unable to Read Registry." After doing some research, I found that most people who had this problem in the past were in one or more of these circumstances: 1) they downloaded the LE from a different website other than the original EA website (the inactive one from a long time ago), 2) they didn't have a properly registered/legal copy of SC4, or 3)they didn't have the Aspyr patch from several years ago that was required for the LE.

Now that all that is irrelevant with the Aspyr App Store Re-release, is it even possible to install the LE on a Mac w/ Wine?

I don't believe it is possible, because AFAIK, the Lot Editor relies on a legitimate version of SC4 to be installed.  So if you wanted to run it in Wine you would need the PC version installed in the same Wine 'bucket' as the Lot Editor.  If you bought the Steam release, you could theoretically install it there (with Steam), but I'm unsure if that would work.

Mac doesn't even have a registry (that's a Windows thing). So a Mac program would not create a registry entry to allow the Lot Editor to work. It's better still to just use the Windows version of SC4 and run it under Wine anyway. Aspyr is just being lazy about the Mac port.

The Windows version of LE will run under Wine and does not require any additional Winetricks.  I haven't gotten into heavy duty usage to stress test it but it seems to work just fine.  It installs just as any other .exe.

It isn't really them being lazy, they were never given the rights to port the Lot Editor, nor did EA ever give them permission to patch the game, aside from what they could during the Rush Hour/Deluxe release.

Okay, I wrote that before Tarkus posted a blog entry yesterday about why Aspyr didn't patch the SC4 Mac port. It's too bad that EA won't give them permission to port the patches over to Mac, since patches like these are pretty important anyway.
