Credible or not?

Looks like the hunt will take a little more longer than expected.

The floor of the Indian Ocean in that area has never been mapped.  It is around 5 Km. deep there.  That's 2,734,033.2 fathoms or 3,106.856 miles deep.  This is far too deep for any but the most robust ASVs.  We may never find out what happened.

A bit less than that I should hope, on the scale of 3 miles rather than 3,000. That would put you in the vicinity of the inner core.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Update.

If this were a U.S. aircraft there would already be dozens of conspiracy theories.

Flight MH 370 search is back to square one.

CNN: What was believed to be the best hope of finding the missing plane is now being called a false hope.

Navy official: Pings not thought to be from Flight 370's black boxes

(CNN) -- The four acoustic pings at the center of the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 for the past seven weeks are no longer believed to have come from the plane's black boxes, a U.S. Navy official told CNN.

The acknowledgment came Wednesday as searchers wrapped up the first phase of their effort, having scanned 329 square miles of southern Indian Ocean floor without finding any wreckage from the Boeing 777-200.

Authorities now almost universally believe the pings did not come from the onboard data or cockpit voice recorders but instead came from some other man-made source unrelated to the jetliner that disappeared on March 8, according to Michael Dean, the Navy's deputy director of ocean engineering.

MH370: Australia rules out main search zone

Government announces plane is not in part of Indian Ocean where searchers previously reported 'pings' from black box

Missing MH370 jet search area ruled out

Acoustic signals thought to be linked to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 have been ruled out as related to the final resting place of the vanished plane, investigators leading the search said Thursday.

The U.S. Navy's Bluefin 21 finished its final underwater mission in the southern Indian Ocean on Wednesday after scouring 330 square miles, the Australian-based Joint Agency Coordination Center said.

"The area can now be discounted as the final resting place of MH370," the JACC said in a statement.

About the only good thing that will come out of all this is maps for the Indian Ocean floor.  I am in favour of the idea that the plane was hijacked, landed safely somewhere and everyone not in the action was deep sixed.

But for the plane to be hijacked, land somewhere and stay hidden, that would seem to be beyond the capabilities of mere terrorists.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me...

No, in that part of the world, just some good forward planning and lots of murder.  The question is what cargo was on the plane to make it worth hijacking?

Hopefully, the plane landed somewhere in a remote area, so the people are still alive.

Not on your egg-type tinbert.  By now they have perished, probably by the hand of the abductors.

I strongly believe alien abductors doesn't exist, and other than crashing at the sea, the only possibility is being hijacked by terrorists and landed somewhere else or crashed.

Now who said anything about aliens?  There are enough terrorists and weirdos in our own society.

The only good that might come of this incident is some kind of new general tracking facility for all (commercial) aircraft.

This is interesting. There have been many reported "sightings" of MH 370 but this person seems to be honest and down-to-earth about what she saw, does not jump to conclusions, and is open to other explanations. She does not say if she saw the flight itself, just something she noticed in the sky.

You mean radar, transponders and military satellites!?!

Any aircraft can be tracked- transponder or no transponder. How else is airspace monitored?

No military satellites.  The GPS system could be modified to handle this.  And yes, I know there is a military version.

The sad part is that even if she did see the plane itself, those searching are focused on the wreckage being somewhere off Australia.  The truth is that there's a vast ocean to search and it could in fact take a year or more to actually locate any wreckage, which by now is at the bottom of a very deep ocean.  Hopefully this leads to closure on the cause of the wreck, but I doubt it will lead to the exact wreckage itself.

The airplane has crashed. The crew and passengers are dead. The airplane will not be found in recognizable pieces. If people need to bury bodies themselves for closure, they will never receive it. Let us not give anybody false hope.

After the time that has elapsed, they've got as much chance of finding out what happened considering this information age as anyone has of finding out what really happened to Emilia Earhart.

Of course, there could be several possible explanations to what she saw. There have been many "sightings" of the airplane. At least, she is honest to admit that her eyes may have been deceiving her. She claims to have seen other airplanes at the same time. If we can find out what planes were in the area at that time we might have a lead.

I never believed any of the odd conspiracy theories. If she did see a burning airplane, it might explain why the communications shut down on the airplane.

Well, that seems to be interesting... and reasonable explanation on how MH370 may have come down.

The 777-200ER is not new to fires, as there was this incident at Cairo.

After mapping ocean floor, crews renew search for Malaysia Airlines flight 370

Now, four months later, those maps are complete, and the search is beginning anew this month as three ships plan to scour the search area for debris by dragging a sensor device just 330 feet (100 meters) above the seabed at a speed of seven miles per hour, according to the Associated Press.

I suspect we have another Amelia Earhart mystery here.  A great deal of money is being spent that could otherwise be deployed, and for what? at this point.  The people are gone, the aircraft is gone.  Leave it to history to find it.

Isn't it amazing that over 75 years after Amelia Earhart's plane disappeared, we still haven't figured out what happened to her?

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Australia says hunt for missing jet may be called off soon

The search of a rugged 60,000 sq km (23,000 sq mile) patch of sea floor some 1,600 km (1,000 miles) west of the Australian city of Perth, which experts believe is the plane's most likely resting place, will likely be finished by May.

Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss told Reuters that a decision would have to be taken well before then as to whether to continue into the vast 1.1 million sq km area around the primary search zone if nothing has been found.

    ....

"For many of the families onboard, they won't have closure unless they have certain knowledge that the aircraft has been located and perhaps their loved ones' remains have been recovered," Truss said in an interview.

"We clearly cannot keep searching forever, but we want to do everything that's reasonably possible to locate the aircraft."

I thought it had already ended.  The benefits from this search are many, but mostly a much better understanding of that part of the ocean.  It seems that they are going to finally apply one last gadget in the search.

40% of the priority zone searched so far.

The remaining 60% should be completed by May if they are on schedule. If the entire area has been exhausted and the plane is still not yet found, they will reconsider what to do next. I do think they should continue and exhaust all possibilities in the current priority search zone. After all, it seems that there was criminal intent behind this disaster.

The next phase after that would be to expand the search zone to an area of about 1.1 Million Square Kilometers. That is about the size of Bolivia. It will be too daunting at that point and they are considering ending the search unless other countries decide to assist and cover the expenses.

It is not the airplane, however. A lost shipwreck has been discovered in the Indian Ocean. The anchor is visible here.
