Hi there,

The topic gives a general summary of the state of the game, including news, updates & DLC released. I'll continue to update this on a regular basis.

In short, the game is certainly playable, with most critical bugs now fixed. There will soon be an offline mode, laying the base for more advanced modding. However, no larger maps are coming (Maxis say due to the technical implications). Though who knows, modders may be able to test this as a proof of concept in the future.

Thank you for your reply Cyclone Boom...

I have been watching and reading The SimCity Status topic and find most of it answer most FAQ...

But what I am looking for here is a more personal opinion from some of my fellow SimCityons...

I know I have not been as active in these forums as of late as I was some time ago,(SimCity4 side of things mainly) but I intend on addressing that issue soon..

as I said a more personal enthusiast opinion is sought....rather then an updated thread (please take no offence)

    @ timmie

Thankyou for moving the post... sorry for posting in the wrong area

In a word...frustrating. I just bought it a few days ago. Yes, it's playable. I have some bugs, such as roads disappearing into the hillside and elsewhere. But nothing seems to break. The real problem is the size. There is simply not enough room to do anything. I mean, it's really small. Forget thinking about expanding. You have no chopice but to specialize in something. The RCI concept is thrown out the window. Yes, you can do RCI, but it's literally minutes and the map is full. It's like having a bad ass sports car but you can only drive it around one square block. Everything is repetitive. You are bored to tears after minutes. You'll finish one city and quickly move onto the next. I keep thinking it's going to get better, but it doesn't. This game is the definition of insanity. Insanity = doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Until the space limit is increased, this game is not worth the money IMHO. And even when that happens, it is still debatable. There are still no terraforming tools, low/med/high wealth is determined by which road is placed, big buildings take up a massive amount of valuable space. I know some people will have a problem with this, but CitiesXL is so much better on almost all fronts. Sure, Simcity has some nice things going for it, such as modular add-ons to existing buildings, great simulation mechanics, and more, but you run out of space so fast it is laughable. To me, offline mode is EA's way of saying, "let's bail out of this game now while we still have everyone's money". Now they can stop supporting the game and move on. Also, knowing Simtropolis, this post will get deleted or modified since it isn't "positive". This game could have been everything. But it has been squashed.

I just watched a video about it on BestBuy.com an I have to say.... I'm not really enticed to buy it now or ever. It just seems to kiddy like too me for some reason. Cartoony might be the better word.Yeah, it's graphically better than sim city 4 in a sense. Though graphics don't make the game in my opinion. But from what I've heard the simulation is not up to par with SimCity 4. So if you ask me it can't possibly be worth it. Not yet anyways.

@Helevitia I thought what you said was funny (especially likd the insanity part) although I know you didn't intend it to be funny and I can't say anything you said was wrong either. I've been saying for months that the offline mode will be the end of patches and DLC and expansions, etc. But I'm still hopeful that a modder (or team) will find a way to increase the city size (and I've said that before too). I think I'll play it more once offline mode comes out just because it won't need the internet and take 15 minutess minimum to load one city (regardless of size) and also cause my Iinternet is slow as ever (dial-up might even be faster).

If size doesn't bother you then the game is very playable and (at the very least 95%) worth it to get and play especially if you use some of the mods on this site. I especially like the chain plopper and service road mod.

Then again, if your a huge fan of SC4 (and its mods) this game will never be worth it.

Helevitia's experience is why I'm still afraid to buy the game.  I play the public beta\demo of SimCity and it only allows you 1 hour before it trashes your city.  In the one hour I was able to fill the entire city from corner to corner.  Now granted if I had more than an hour I would have made more careful decisions and done better planning, but it is VERY possible to fill up a city in just a few hours.

This means you can't get attached to a city like you could in SC4 as you grow it to a sprawling metropolis via the large tile size and adjacent cities with interconnecting roads.

The fact that you aren't allowed to make any new roads in or out of the city and have to use what was given to you is a joke, especially in the cities that only have one way in or out.  What cities do you know of in the real world that have a single road leading in and out of them?  Even the smallest of cities in the US aren't like that.

Until they fix the city size, I'm sitting on the sidelines.

And the way the game is set up it's fun to mess with small towns - but a small town at the end of a dead-end or looping road makes almost no sense.  Why would anyone settle there?

Reporting back in.  I have to be honest here.  As much as I complained earlier, I find myself compelled to come back and play the game over and over again.  I'm actually having fun and once I started understanding how everything works, it tends to get better and lasts longer.  Is it great?  In some ways, but it still has a boatload of shortcomings.  It's not Simcity 5.  One thing I didn't realize the first few days is how integrated the cities are in the same region.  Because of that, it makes the game a little more fun.  Setting up things in one region helps other regions.  I could see how playing with friends would make it even more fun.  So, I retract some of my negativity.  I guess if you don't expect Simcity 5, tone down your high expectations, the game can be fun for what it is.  I don't think it's worth $40.  I bought it for $20.  Anyway, just trying to be honest and admit hwere I was wrong.

I agree with most of this.

Though it doesn't take me 15 minutes, in part due to me playing on Europe West server at night here in the U.S to load a city.

I've been playing Maxis games for 20 years now and nearly all their games, especially Simcity games have always been incomplete/buggy/broken at release until about 3rd year on the market due to patching and/or modding of some sort.

Though I have played Simcity 2013 for ~200 hours (It would be higher if I  wasn't as busy as I am today)  and my only major complaint left is how broken the commuting student are after 9 updates.

    A few minor issues are:

    • Utilities sharing
    • Communting shoppers and workers
    • Tourists

These three need some minor tweaking, but they don't do anything serious to my cities just some minor annoyances.

Maxis made it a point to make this game a realistic simulation as they feasibly could based on market research and feedback.

Once you get used to how realistic the simulator is, the game much easier to understand and enjoy.

With the expasion pack added in, I enjoy this game almost as much as I did Simcity 2000 (Saturn version, it had futuristic buildings) which was my second favorite Simcity behind 3000U (This obviously is my favorite Simcity title)
