Hello everyone,

I recently found out that Maxis are ready to consider modification support for SimCity 2013. Show your support now!

Given that (as of writing), the only mods EA/Maxis is supporting is "cosmetic mods", my response is very tepid. Questions arise to me like:

  • What happens if we use mods like Plop Outside the the Citybox?
  • What about mods that modify (read: improve) the AI or the simulation?
  • If someone mods the game to allow for bigger maps, what will happen?
  • What about mods in lieu of current or planned DLC?
  • And most importantly: Will we get banned, or have our accounts suspended for using the above-mentions, or any other mods not sanctioned by EA/Maxis?

I payed NZ$110 for this game, and do not want to be locked out of something I legally purchased.

Recolouring stuff isn't modding. Let us create our own buildings, roads and everything, not to mention mods changing the gameplay.

Here's hoping they don't screw it up.

Well it wouldn't be the first game where users were allowed to sell their mods for a profit.

Many games already allow this.

In order for the game to have long term success, in order for the game to continue to sell strongly through the years (as opposed to months), modifications are a necessity. After some time, a game loses its appeal and its shininess. Original players play it less, thus "advertising" it less via city journals, youtube videos and what have you.

However, if a fresh version of the game appears, with abilities to modify it to each user's desires, original players are more apt to "advertise" that game via all modes of social media. Make it happen, Maxis! Make it happen.

I pretty much see them making modding a thing only if they do the offline mode as well.  Mods in a multiplayer game can be problematic depending on what is being modded.  Single player games are much better suited to this and if it's single player there just went all of the good reasons for an online connection.  MrCinatit gave some very good reasons why they should allow the modding that should appeal to the Corporate pocketbook.  So here is hoping.

While the bigger map thing has been a big dissapointment this weekend, the modding is sounding really good right now.

Offline is considered as a way to make modding easier. And the only restrictions they are talking about is protecting players who don't want to be trolled by infinite-crime mods and the like. They seem to be leaning on an offline mode as an easy fix for preventing trolling.

I don't see balancing as a problem. Let those who want to mod use off-line version (it wont affect others). Thus more "drastic" mods can be allowed too. Also, you can use mods that are approved by Maxis on the online version. (for balancing).
