Nice to see the ATEX expanding. 4.gif And you're probably right about the building. It would look quite out-of-place in Carpathia. I think my limit in height is the Velascoma building I have.

In other news:

Seahawk Timber Co. has pulled itself together and has agreed to begin shipping various cellulose-based raw materials to you. 4.gif Rest assured, no sentient trees will be included in any shipments. 2.gif

As for company names... Well, I won't be suggesting names. I'll let your other posters do that. 4.gif However, given the rate of Carpathian expansion and the growth of Carpathian industry, I do have three companies which are interested in becoming a part of Lyra.

Schulmanator Record Studios: It is the intention of Schulmanator RS to take its artists interstellar. Since Aradhel Leingod is already somewhat known outside of Carpathia, he shall be the first to be promoted.

Equilibria Technologies: A leading maker of a wide variety of electronic devices, both for work and entertainment, in Carpathia. (Equilibria Defense Technologies is a subsidiary and will not apply to join)

Archangel Galacom: The Carpathian pioneer in subspace and non-subspace communications.

For right now, this is just an announcement of intent to join. It'll take a bit for me to make up the registration cards. Especially if I fail to complete them before the new Harry Potter book comes out on Saturday. 3.gif

I go on vacation, and when I come back I am shocked! I read the thread for the Nephlon Arista building, and drooled at the prospect of Yavina 17 when it was announced, only to sadly see the project shelved. But now it liveeesssssss! Of course, I'll probably never be able to use it, but it will be a nice collectable none the less! Also, that is a brilliant little essay on carbon value, I don't think many realize how important that element is to not only our survival, but the very materials that make our modern lifestyle viable. I will eagerly await the return of Zanapolis and the completion of your Courscant project.

    Hydrogen Cycle in Zanapolis
     "Hydrogen economy beyond fuel cells"

Exhaustion of all economically viable petroleum reserves of Planet Arista 4 during the Digital Age has put a decisive end to a carbon-based economy started in the Petroleum Age. There are two major divisions within the cycle - chemical pathway and physical pathways.

    hcycleis7.jpg

    Means of Hydrogen Production
Unless brought from external sources, hydrogen is merely an energy carrier and not he source of energy. The main source of hydrogen consumed in Zanapolis mainly comes from space, sea, and local/domestic generation by electricity. In various parts the city, there are underground hydrogen storage facilities.

    Floating electrochemical hydrogen plants
Initially, hydrothermal conversion of natural gas (methane) was the most common method of hydrogen extraction. In mid-Digital Age, this was superceded by Suiso Renmei‘s ocean-based floating solar-powered hydrogen plants and space mining. The largest commercial fleet of floating hydrogen plants is found in the Ward of Sagittatius Proxima

    sagittariusproximahqw6.jpg
(The Ward of Sagittarius Proxima - Floating solar hydrogen abstraction plant array)

Technologically the biggest breakthrough in develpment of floating solar-powered hydrogen plant is the highly efficient photovoltaic cell. Multi-layered composite photovoltaic cells achieved a conversion efficiency of 50% and pushed this hydrogen production method to a commercially viable standard.

(Information provided by Suiso Renmei Ltd.)

    Distributed photocatalytic hydrogen generation centers
As Zanapolis moved into hydrogen economy, it meant a formidable challenge in altering the exsiting infrastructure. At the end, the transition was done in a way that required minimal changed to the infrastructure - distributed hydrogen generation. Some questioned the efficiency of such form of hydrogen infrastructure, but technology solved most of the problem, especially photocatalytic hydrogen generation method. Photocatalytic water-splitting of rutile-phase doped titanium or tungsten oxide is used where large-scale floating plants are not possible, such as the middle of a high-density urban area. Such hydrogen production centers are powered by electricity and water. Some carbon-based waste treatment facilities also generate hydrogen by photocatalytical decomposition of carbon wastes. Distributed hydrogen infrastructure removed a need for potentially dangerous canalization network of hydrogen gas.

External literature on photocatalytic hydrogen generation from organic compounds

    hondahomeenergysystemvi6.jpg
(typical hydrogen fueling station - with local hydrogen generation unit underground)

LED light source is used as a single-wavelength light source and the photocatalyst is illuminated in the presence of water. Fine-tuning of photocatalyst and choice of LED achieves an efficiency up to ~40%. This technology was theorized as early as in the Petroleum Age, but the technology of that time could achieve only 10% efficiency and the method was economically not viable.

According to the census of AE1454 Day100, Zanapolis had 1,950,000 local hydrogen production centers throughout the city, with 1,200,000 found in private residential buildings.

    Space mining
The biggest reserve of deuterium and tritium is found in space. SuisoRenmei Ltd. is especially active in space hydrogen mining operation. Most precious light isotopes such as Helium-3 are mined in asteroids, an bulk hydrogen is mined in the satellites of gas giant planets of Arista System. SuisoRenmei Hachigohki and SuisoRenmei Shichigohki are the most common space tankers that carry hydrogen and helium-3.

    suiso7yq1.jpg
    (Cosmotanker 'Suiso Renmei Shichigohki')

Spaceship building industry is trying to build a hydrogen mining ship that can operate on gas giant planets, making possible a much more efficient and reliable supply of hydrogen.

    Usage:

Physical: nuclear fuel cycle "Physicohydrogen Pathway"
Nuclear fission power discovered at the end of the Petroleum Age used only heavy atoms, mostly transuranium elements. Development in nuclear fusion technology not only opened a way to practically unlimited energy sources, but also integrated existing nuclear fission technology into broader nuclear fuel cycle involving both light and heavy elements. Today, two closely related nuclear fuel cycles exist - one centered around fission power and another around fusion power.

A stock of hydrogen is passed through an enrichment facility to extract deutrirum (D) and tritium (T) for D-T nuclear fusion power plants. On the other hand, depleted hydrogen enters the chemical cycle. The fusion product is mostly helium, but there are some amounts of radioactive isotopes of lithium, berylium and boron. These elements are regarded as nuclear wastes and its disposal was a consant problem. Yet in recent years, antimatter and advanced nuclear synthesis (e.g. actinium into uranium nuclear fuel or nuclear synthesis of technetium) technologies are easing the issue up to some extent.

    kosmo3yt2.jpg
(The Ward of Kosmodrom Odin, Fusion power plant)

    Chemical: oxidation pathways, "Chemohydrogen Pathway"
Hydrogen “burning” processes in general, are called oxidation pathways. This includes combustion and fuel cells. Fuel cell technologies completed in the mid-digital age completely de-carbonated the transport sector, and transformed the electricity distribution grid from centralized to distributed.

The oxidation processcan be categorized into two types - direct and indirect. Direct oxidation are combustion and fuel cells, where hydrogen is directly converted into water. Indirect oxidation involves various chemical processes, often overlapping with the carbon cycle. One example of such overlap is hydrothermal conversion of methane into hydrogen, and olefin hydrogeneation process widely used in “carbon industry” found in the carbon cycle in Zanapolis. Direct or indirect oxidation, either way, the end-product is water vapor.

    capella1ty2.jpg
(One of the contact points of hydrogen cycle and carbon cycle - methane/petrol oligomerization plant, Ward of Capella Raion)

There are currently about 6,000,000 registered motor vehicles, and 59.3% of them run on hydrogen fuel cell, 38.9% run on electricity, 1.2% run on hydrocarbons (petrol/methane) and 0.5% on solar power. The last remaining 0.1% are groud light rail and other public transportations that run directly on main electricity grid.

Aircrafts and spacecrafts propel in atmosphere by burning hydrogen (in chemical sense). Nuclear fusion process for spacecraft propulsion in atmosphere is prohibited due to light radioactive waste products.

    Issues:
    Light radioactive isotope waste problem
Nuclear fusion process creates some radioactive isotopes, and this poses the same hazard as nuclear fission processes invented in the Petroleum Agel, and this is the very reason fusion engines of spacecrafts are not allowed in atmosphere. Traditionally, they were either buried or launched into space. Recently, it is starting to be used as antimatter co-annihilation agent for Graviton drives. This is considered an ideal solution as the unwanted radioactive elements completely disappear.

    Hydrogen leakage
Hydrogen molecule in stratosphere can photodissociate by ultraviolet radiation and can create hydride radicals that destroy the ozone layer. Despite numerous measures to prevent hydrogen leaking from any working systems, it is not 100%. Every year during spring time over the south pole of Planet Arista 4, some degree of ozone depletion is observed. Since the south pole is mostly occupied by ocean, no significant damages to environment are expected, but some environmentalists call for an action.

More science than I care for right now. And as for ozone depletion worries, Ozone can be made (and likely transported) to trouble spots.

And I thought..... what do you think of making your brands Myon's or Zabitake's, and have a thier branches in Zanapolis.
    @Menotyou
Yes, 6 million vehicles for 23 million citizens! There are geographical and historical reasons for it.... Zanapolis stands on numerous deltas, and road network is not very efficient. Another reason is the advanced public transportation - maglev monorail operates at 300km/h and ATEX at 700km/h - why choose to spend loads of effort driving your own car at 60km/h?3.gif
    @crushedcar
That is one of the reasons I am thinking of BATing a "stratosphere platform" solar powered flying ozone generation plant. The plan actually exists in real world1.gif

    Thanks!

whooop, I didn't comment after the Hydrogen cycle thinger, or when you asked for company names.

I have quite a bit of trouble finding names, but I look around at Google Maps at streets and towns with exotic names. For Alamosa, since it's based on Los Angeles, I looked at maps of California and took Mexican sounding names from there. For Apiliani, I've been looking at maps of Hawaii, as well as the names of historical people and ordinary people from the state.

Unfortunately I have no names...I'll get back to you...

Wow, you are the master of background articles. You have so much information on the goings in your world. Also, diagrams FTW. I for one like numbers. :]

Regarding your question before, my CJ will slowly evolve with a time scale. So it might catch up to yours... eventually. In my version of Earth, humanity is set back by a calamity and is just getting back on it's feet, so no pretty spaceships for a while. 3.gif

Oh, and I thought of some names you could use. Feel free to mix them up where neccessary.

    Living Large Furniture

    Non eXistent

Xperian Xenochemicals (my name sounded futuristic 3.gif )

Verona Vertical (good name for one of those skyscraper construction companies)

    Rundle Real Estate

    Sphere

Cubed (these two names could be used as some "new tech" companies)

    Reformed Refitters (dodgy tuner-ups gallore!)

    Alistair Aeronautical Administration

Pellinore Pertroleum (this old fuel could be used to power emergency supplies)
