It is CJ's like Eureka that turn Sim City from a game into an art form. Your CJ has quite a future in store, so long as you continue updating with the same amount of professionalism.

A very well planned and presented CJ. I will be back, you can count on that!

Five stars *****! Excellent work. I do have a question: Is the Mayor House a kind of White House, where every mayor have to live there while being in charge? If it's like that, then the money for the maintenance comes from the city 42.gif. And now I have a request, can I put you Excellent (yes, with capital E') Cj on my signature?? that is all for now.

Long Overdue Answers To Your Qs

Ynterboy: The blog entries featured in this CJ are screenshots from an actual blog that exists hidden deep in a remote corner of the Internet. I'd post a link, but that would give away aspects of the story that don't need to be revealed yet.

evening: My cities in SC4 are almost always built with a fair amount of realism in mind. (American) Cities in real life are almost completely made up of residential zoning, since single-family detached homes are an inefficient and space-consuming style of building. This is true in SC4 as well, so low-density residential development will take up a lot of space despite housing relatively few Sims.

marszewczak: The turning lanes can be found in the latest version of the NAM, which can be found on the home page of Simtropolis. I highly suggest downloading it.

kwakelaar: Don't sweat the double-post. The site has indeed been wacky lately, so you're forgiven.

ElBarto92: Thanks for stopping by with a compliment, and thanks again for the glowing review! It's awesome to know that so many people like this CJ, and getting free promotion in other threads is even better. Thanks again!

Deathtoall: The townhouses featured in the Eastport screenshots are indeed original Maxis buildings, at least I'm pretty sure. On the STEX there can be found some cool Brownstones, but I don't think any are in those earlier screenshots I posted.

sendarrow: Yes, the Eureka mayor house is a kind of White House for the city's many mayors, and yes, the city picks up the tab for any maintenance. Luckily not too many of the mayors have been party animals! And as for adding a link to Eureka! in your signature, please do! That goes for anyone else---feel free to promote this CJ in any way you'd like, as long as it's positive, of course! Thanks.

Every Person Who Commented: Thanks again for the many, many kind words! You guys/girls are the best.

    More updates coming VERY soon.

EDIT: 2000 visits in ONE WEEK!!! SWEET!!

Wow, this is fantastic! Your city is amazingly desinged, I love the real estate values and the mosaic on the last page looked brilliant. Congradulations on 2000 views, very well deserved! This is truly one of the great upcoming CJs, I can't wait for more updates because this is great! 44.gif

    District Overview: Reynolds Point

Directly to the North of Downtown Eureka is the largest district in the Eureka metropolitan area: Reynolds Point.

    ReynoldsPointOverviewBack.jpg

The district gets its name from Horatio Reynolds, a river explorer, who, while navigating the Bourque River south toward the Bay, landed on the peninsula formed by the confluence of the Bourque and its southern sister, Beargrass River.

Reynolds established a small fort at the tip of that peninsula. Today that space is occupied by Eureka University, a respected educational establishment known for its superb Business, Engineering and Planning departments.

    EurekaUniversity.jpg

The fort established by Reynolds didn't last very long, since there wasn't any need for it once the village of Eureka was established farther south. The district remained relatively empty until Eureka began its outward expansion 150 years ago. Today, almost the entire district is built upon.

To the East of the Bay in Reynolds Point is actually the northern neighborhoods of Eastport, and the residents on that side of the shore fall under that jurisdiction, rather than that of Reynolds Point.

The actual district, the West side of the Bay, is divided into three distinct neighborhoods: Reynolds, La Fontaine and Roenick.

    ReynoldsHoods.jpg

The residents of each neighborhood are particularly territorial, and in the past street fights between the youth of rival nabes were not uncommon. Today, cooler heads prevail. The turf conflicts haven't faded, though, and rivalries between each neighborhood's recreational sports teams remain fierce.

Each neighborhood has its own downtown, a small business district where most jobs are concentrated.

    Reynolds:

    DowntownReynolds.jpg

    La Fontaine:

    DowntownLaFontaine.jpg

    Roenick:

    DowntownRoenick.jpg

    RoenickPark.jpg

Besides the neighborhoods, the district of Reynolds Point features a number of important landmarks and attractions. Of these, perhaps the small general aviation airport of Dunham Field is the most prominent:

    DunhamField.jpg

Dunham Field is an old airport, and serves the needs of Eureka's private pilots. Residents desiring regional or national flights must travel north to Bend and depart there. Eureka's relatively small population cannot support a larger field at this time. Dunham Field is home to many small prop planes as well as several private jets, owned by local business leaders---and the mayor.

To the East of the airport is every young Eurekan's favorite place to go---Eureka Kingdom Theme Park!!

    EurekaKingdom.jpg

Four roller coasters, a ferris wheel, fountains and all the junky carnival food you can eat---Eureka Kingdom is every kid's dream come true!

Just North of the amusement park is the massive Eureka Water Reservoir and treatment plant, which serves the water needs of the entire city. Water is drawn from the Bourque River, stored here in the reservoir and then treated, eventually flowing through the taps into every single home and business in Eureka.

    WaterReservoir.jpg

Swimming is prohibited, but not if you're a duck.

Reynolds Point is as much an industrial district as it is a residential one, and a large portion of the district's land area is dedicatd to the needs of manufacturing and technical businesses. To the far West of the district is the large West Reynolds Rail Yard.

    RailYard.jpg

The trains leaving the yard follow tracks that lay below grade in concrete channels to minimize the impact on traffic flow and the quality of life of local residents.

    TrainChannel.jpg

    TrainChannel2.jpg

Local train enthusiasts often can be found on the edges of the channels, watching with glee as the locomotives pass by carrying their heavy loads of raw materials and manufactured goods.

And what tour would be complete without a profile of real estate in Reynolds Point? The district is home to many luxurious mansions, buildings of distinct and varying architectural styles, and one fairly infamous example of starchitecture .

Some of the more valuable houses are built on a cliff overlooking the Bay in the Reynolds neighborhood:

    ReynoldsMansions.jpg

As for mid-rise buildings, those built in Reynolds Point are of varying styles and sizes.

    ReynoldsLuxury.jpg

    ReynoldsArchitecture.jpg

Starchitecture is a particularly touchy subject in the district. Several years ago, well-known local architect Samuel Yates was given approval for a unique mid-rise building on the edge of the Reynolds neighborhood business district. The official name of the building is The Yates-Smith Building, derived from the architect's name and the name of the main developer---J. Taylor Smith.

But everybody knows the building by it's appropriate and infamous nickname: The Fangs.

    FangsTower.jpg

Just like with most examples of so-called starchitecture, opinions are roughly divided 50-50. Half of Reynolds Point residents love the design and feel it compliments the modest skyline, while the other half hate the building with a passion and would prefer the aesthetic atrocity be torn down without delay. As far as the powers-that-be are concerned, especially the very-influential Samuel Yates, the building will stand for a long time.

Reynolds Point is the largest and most populated district of Eureka, and in the future, it too will see further significant growth. It's only a matter of time.

Very nice update, it's got a little bit of everything. 44.gif

Eureka University is very nice.  It's fun for me to see such a familiar terrain with completely different buildings on it.
Very attractive theme park you have, Eurekans kids are blessed. As simple as it may be, I very much like that suburban park with the pond in Roenick. As for starchitecture: I actually quite like the Fangs though I guess not all Eurekans do.

42.gif And something I have seen many times but never dared to ask:  the rounded and diagonal taxiways (or do you call it tarmac?) - is that photoshopped or are there lots/textures for that?

The airports are created using Thalassicus' Airport Pack 2, which was never posted on the STEX for some reason. Click here:

    Airport Pack 2

I really wish someone (like Thalassicus) would stick that sucker on the STEX so everyone could find it.

If you've been using Joerg's stuff before, replacing it with the new pack will cause some graphics quirks in your cities. You'll probably see some black boxes formed where some of your airport lots used to be. All you have to do is bulldoze the old lots and build over them, and the boxes will vanish.

    Have fun.

I'm very impressed with this CJ, louisville.  And it's zipped right along, too, and rightly so- as you've got a quality city here to present.  I think that this may get an addition to my signature.

What can I say? your hard work says it all. I like how the three neighborhoods have their own downtown even thou I can of like Reynolds' downtown better.Could it be because of the The Yates-Smith Building? I will think about, but, I have to admit it, that building adds shine to Reynolds' downtown. 36.gif

I have noticed that Eureka has more residents than jobs. Should we fix that? My proposal is to build 10 new (NDEX and /Zumi/) buildings in Downtown district. The buildings would bring nearly 30,000 jobs to the city of Eureka.

(LV-PM me so I can give you a list of the buildings)

Good update, Eureka university looks interesting, as does the rest of Reynolds Point.
I saw the little jab at starchitecture in there, however I wouldnt mind the Fangs in my city!

First off, all cities have more residents than jobs. All cities have children and retired people, so by default the total number of residents is greater than the total number of people employed. That's basic urban demography.

As for your planning suggestions, I'll respectfully decline, though I very much appreciate the offer. Taller buildings with more jobs are soon on the way---but you'll just have to be patient. The future of Eureka is very much already determined.

Great Update! Just wondering, was that a hint that the airport might expand if the population was able to support it?

Keep it coming. I'm looking forward to seeing what the rest of Eureka! is like.44.gif

Now I realize it's probably just me, but I can't see any of the pics! All the pics from the last update and your avatar, as well as the pics you've posted in the starchitect thread, are not appearing. Which disappoints me, because the last update sounds really awesome. Any suggestions?

    Jamie 40.gif

Edit: Problem solved now. Great update! I especially love the use of cerulean's building as a starchitecture masterpiece that's divided the city. Excellent! I like the university too. Keep up the great work!

    District Overview: Flat Field

Flat Field was the first true suburban district of Eureka, where development began around year 100 of the city's history. The term suburban is perhaps a misnomer, however, because Flat Field continued both the street grid and the urban pattern of building outward from Reynolds Point. So, while Flat Field may be an outer district, it resembles the inner districts in organization and context.

    FlatFieldOverviewBack.jpg

Flat Field is primarily a residential district, dominated by the centrally-located Flat Field Park---the largest park in all of Eureka. The park features beautiful fountains, brick trails, meadows, sports fields and a monument to the first mayor of Eureka, Reginald Arroworth.

    FlatFieldParkAerial.jpg

    FlatFieldPlaza.jpg

    ParkSports.jpg

    ParkRotunda2.jpg

Due to its natural beauty---especially when viewed from above---Flat Field Park has attracted mid-rise residential development along its edges. Some of the most sought-after real estate is located within the district near the park. However, due to the city's general lack of size and amenities, even the largest penthouses are still relatively affordable.

    ParkEdge1.jpg

    ParkTower.jpg

Other than the park, the only real attraction in Flat Field is the stunning Eureka Cathedral, built in what is commonly refered to as The Flat Field Citadel. The Citadel is located on a small hill just to the north of the park.

    Cathedral.jpg

The Citadel was originally designed as the center of civic life in Flat Field, but after the Cathedral, the police headquarters and jail complex, a hospital and District Hall were built, development was halted by environmental groups. A rare breed of bird, the Flat Field Finch, was found nesting in the trees atop the Citadel across the street from the Cathedral. Litigation continues to this day, and much of the Citadel remains unbuilt.

    Citadel1.jpg

Flat Field is not as complex or exciting as Reynolds Point, not as historic as Downtown and not as busy as Eastport, but it is considered one of the more important districts of Eureka. When growth explodes in the next several years, Flat Field will also see an enormous influx of residents, businesses and new buildings. Vast changes will occur.

For now, though, the district is a peaceful, beautiful place in which to live.
