Why do you love Simtropolis?

One thing I don't 'love' is that Simcity 2013 was given equal status to 4 with amount of forum space allotted. Also the Battlefield adverts. However I suppose the site costs a lot to run or something for servers or something.

It is a pity Maxis produced what they did in 2013. Otherwise there may well be cause to still 'love' this site. The disconnection with the franchise caused by 2013's failure... Is rather depressingly bleak. Oh well nowt you can do innit. EA will have their way... Pity I can't become head of EA and tell them how to make a proper game... Bunch of morons lol.

Um to end on a positive note... This forum isn't as a dead as Civitas. My goodness. Mr Smith is one quiet developer.

I agree. I dislike the attention Simtropolis gives to under-deserving topics (especially certain games). I have blocked battlefield adverts everywhere (as well as all things Dragon Cave, I kinda wish both of those things could be put on the Adblock Easy List). I donated $70 to ST so that I no longer have to waste bandwidth on STEX (I also stopped giving Adblock exceptions to facebook, ST, Curse/MCF, YouTube, and Adfly).

I also dislike how certain posts are handled. I have seen links to malware kept around for weeks after I report them; I have heard songs with extremely foul language in the lyrics (but not title) in the music threads, while I was issued 2 warning points for posting a link to a song with ABSOLUTELY NO foul language in the lyrics but a strong word for excrement or lies in the title; I have seen open insulting of certain posters going seemingly unpunished, even after reporting them; I have been issued 2 warning points for redacting personal information (by deleting 20 posts). While all the others could be seen as going easy on other people, I have been greatly and unfairly punished as well (which is against the rules as far as I can tell). I have been issued 2 warning points after a thoughtful and honest post about my preferences because some other poster(s) misinterpreted it and took it personal (though I neither mentioned, hinted at, or even thought about anyone [besides myself and some people I know in real life who do not visit this site] before posting nor was I rude while posting) and no one paid attention to my appeal and I was given a PM a week after I posted that said my posts would be edited without any hint that I would be punished and I apologized for the unintentional consequences from the sensitive; a week or two after that PM, even though I had not posted in that thread or about that topic anywhere else on Simtropolis since a few days before the PM (so over 2 weeks before the unfair issuing of two warning points) I was hit with 2 warning points and a temporary ban with no good explanation. A month after that injustice, I came back and sent a polite PM asking for an explanation and was never given one. Every time I mention it, my entire post gets deleted with no explanation, even if I am on topic and have a large, well thought-out post that only has one sentence about the injustice. I have since decided to back up all of my posts on my notepad on my electronic device.

I think that SC2013 still has a great amount of untapped potential to evolve from SimsVille Online with dumb Sims to something that can beat SimCity 4 and Cities XL (add a larger region or a few with 20 cities, 5 great works, and 10 regional minor works, even if each takes up 2 region slots, as long as all town slots and regional works are interconnected; add freight as a Global Market resource while increasing capacity of freight trucks, freight trains, cargo ships, and cargo planes; further refine traffic (make civilian vehicles pull over for emergency vehicles with sirens); increase building diversity; increase amount of resources to include food, wood, paper, uranium, natural gas, and precious metals; increase utility and resource extraction diversity; change commerce to make offices, shops, and restaurants/grocers different; add a My Sim + U-Drive-It mode).

I am not sure if Civitas will ever see fruition. I would side with Simutrans to change the public player into a SimCity-style mayor player plus a StarPeace-style CEO player (right now Simutrans is all about running private transportation companies but has a multiplayer setting and has AI's for competing transport companies as well as an AI without a budget or profit motive for building factories, shops, power plants, city roads, housing, tourist attractions, post offices, civic buildings, and shops/distribution centers). If the "Public Sector" player gets an overhaul (into either totalitarian mayor or into two players: weak mayor plus a corporate CEO), then Simutrans can become 3 games in one (Transport Tycoon, SimCity, and StarPeace)!

My parents tell me I am getting too old (22) to play computer games and that I should stop talking about them. I am starting to believe them and I am very close to giving up childish video games and their fora. Also, this post has taken approximately 3 hours to write so you know it is well thought out. Finally, the main reason I am on Simtropolis this week is because I injured my knee last week (went to see the doctor today; he said my ligaments overextended but had no permanent damage, my cartilage and meniscus have no permanent damage, and my water-on-the-knee, pain, & swelling will go down soon enough if I take it easy and put ice or cold packs on it).

I hope you are enjoying yourselves more than I am.

Best Wishes and Kindest Regards,

Marco A Meza

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

^ Tell your parents that you are now an adult and can do as you damned well please.  If you are still living under their roof and not paying room and board, it is probably time to consider how you are going to support yourself.

Simcity isn't childish. If I was a moderator at a forum I would probably be quite tolerant of the occasional err, I think the freedom the Internet gives shouldn't be wasted by uneccessary harshness, and I understand how misunderstandings arise so easily when all you have is text. However there are definitely worse sites for that. Neopets.com has quite possibly the worst moderation in the Internet. You can say something perfectly innocent and get banned without warning, or you can get away with all sorts and then one day out of the blue suspended for something perfectly civil. The site has certainly gone downhill since I joined in 2001.

My only real complaint about this site is regarding the apparent submission to EA and their awful games, but I understand the site requires money to run, and as a benefits pauper I am in no position to assist in this.

This is the only off topic/general chat forum that I use these days. Possibly I am out of touch (Myspace was the last one I used before this site), but as Simcity is a common interest that in theory should at least to some extent bind us with a common identity, at least I've more of a reason for being here than Myspace where I never found many people who thought anywhere near like I did about anything. It is a pity that the better quality more constructive threads seem quite slow here whereas 'bigger maps' threads tend to escalate quite quickly into 'hot' topics.

I personally don't see a future for Simcity 2013 unless they mod it to the bone. It has so many basic flaws in its design. Civitas is still in my bookmarks. Virtucity if I ever do return to it (unlikely at present) will be isometric SC2000 like game.

Mark, the site needs the revenue it gets from EA.  While EA must be going through a strange situation right now vis-a-vis the SimCity mess, they are quite a successful company and have shifted their emphasis to consoles lately.  Have you tried any of their console games?

Agreeing with Nonny here. EA's console games are very good.

But we are going off topic kinda.

The reason I joined is originally for the STEX but now as much as for the forums as well. I've made new friends through this site and that's great. I think the moderating team do an excellent job of keeping it clean and civil here.

Well done everyone!
