MrCinatit: What did you think of this? (Amsterdam) Isn't it a shame that we can't build diagonal canals? This is really an inspiring layout!

if you'd like some more pics of this kind, I can google around a bit for ya! (just for the inspiration)

it's a shame we can't create a lot of diagonal things - this would help with a lot of ultra-realism projects.
i see pictures of winding and diagonal roads, and houses which follow those roads, and wish we could do the same things here. not only diagonal, but rounded corners.
but, then again, i also look at what we were able to do in previous installments of the game, and the improvements have been by leaps and bounds. I was looking at one of my mountains from SimCity 3000, and it is laughable compared to what can be done here.
so, who knows what can be accomplished once SimCity 5 comes out. I just hope I have completed my city journals by then!

I would also prefer the first site for founding Nijmegen.

Nice update, utora! I like the harbour. Can't wait to see more towns developing and the president campaign! I think the president campaign could be a nice story3.gif!

Question 1: where did you get that freight station?
Question 2: when is the sign up for joining the story?

Jonda1975: Thank you for commenting, and a warm welcome to this journal!
MrCinatit: You're right; I guess there will always be ways to make the game even better, although I find the lack of diagonal options a quite annoying thing. For me there's absolutely NO need for an SC5 at the moment: there's so much to achieve in SC4 for me at the moment (haven't ever built a larger city than 180.000 for example); and without Simtrop, I wouldn't have played the game so fanatically!
Nijntje123, dscampbell, flrscf: The first option looks the best at first sight, I agree, but a closer look would reveal that it's actually much more hilly than Nijmegen will ever be...the landscape resembles  much more the German Moessel/Eiffel area; so I don't know if I'm going to build Nijmegen there; we'll see
Subedei: Thanx you like the harbour area: I spent a lot of time on it!
Dark Avatar: The update took quite some time, sorry for that, but I'm very busy with college as well...
And I thought it would be essential (for the sake of continuity) to show the various developmental stages, I'll keep on doing that from now on, glad you like it!
flrscf: The freight station is called Kralore Freight Station, but I don't know where I found it. It must be either the Stex, or Gizmo's site (Lunarpages.com?) I'll check it for you! The sign-up form will take some time: I have to think of some clever ways of introducing you in the story... Give it a week!
andrew george: thanks for the compliment, it really means something to me: I spent a lot of time on it!

very nice update, Utora, some great use of the piers there (don't you wish we could build up to bridges, though?).
as for SimCity 5, I agree...unfortunately, i am starting to think that is Maxis' next focus, instead of the expansion pack i am hoping for (was kind of hoping for a weather related pack, but i honestly don't think that is coming).

Yes, I too have a feeling that SC5 development is probably full-speed ahead now that TS2 is done.

I only drop by occasionally, so I've had quite a lot of pages to catch up. I'm really impressed by how diverse and yet consistent this journal is, and you can see how much time and effort has been put in it.

As for inpiration/motivation for the storyline: Writing sure takes a lot of time, so nobody wants to spend time not knowing if viewers actually read it. Personally, I try to present my CJ in a way that appeals to both viewers who read and viewers who just look at it. I started off with like half a storyline, but now I'm basically just uploading pics with descriptions. You obviously have more imagination and persistance than I do...

Good luck for your new capital!  Inspiring to see a new nation being born -- and hopefully not blown away by extraterrestrians...

And if you call a dozens of bulldozers and flatten the area a bit? On the other hand, that would be quite expensive

You know there exists a map of Amsterdam already. I started with it, but it's not easy with all those canals. Below you'll see the city center, the entire region is 6x6 large maps I believe.

Wow! This looks absolutely awesome! I guess the only option to build diagonal canals is by using the terrain tool.. You're inspiring me!

actually, it would be easy to do it with a paint program...however, since i kind of prefer working with in-game tools, i've never played around with it.

Never thought of that; I was just messing around with it. I'll show some results. After all I come to the conclusion that Oppie's canalset is the best option, because with the terrain tool I also run into problems making a perfect diagonal layout (well, maybe after thousand hours... it ain't worth it). The other option is to do it like Frogface does in his latest journal, but that's not realistic either (at least not for the Dutch model: his waterways are lying too deep, and the shores are too high: it looks like Paris, the borders of the Seine river look exactly like it, but not those of Amsterdam..) not a bad word about Frogface, his attempt is of an unimaginably high quality. However, Amsterdam or Holland just doesn't look like that, so that's why I won't use his method, although I doubt if I could manage such perfectionism..

    /idealbb/files/canal_2.jpg

    /idealbb/files/canal_3.jpg

Oh, and a MAJOR shortcoming in this scenario is the impossibility of building bridges.. the terrain isn't elevated enough, and the canals aren't wide enough. It could be done, but then you must raise the terrain so extremely that even the last piece of realism disappears.. I guess I'll stay with Oppie's.

Scale is the main problem here: Oppie's canals are just the perfect size. Building canals with the terrain tool obliges you to make them larger, if you want to build bridges, and that's bad for realism, 'cause it doesn't just look that way in reality... AARGHH!! It drives me crazy!

i don't know - i kind of like the hand-made canals, though of course i think Oppies is great as well. they seem to have more of the realistic feel to them, though, with the flowing water.
as for the bridges, if you use the Bridge Height mod (here: https://www.simtropolis.com/modfiles/content.cfm?section=MODS&detail=314 ), you might get what you are looking for with bridges - i used it with relatively narrow canals (i think mine were two - maybe three - tiles wide), and the bridges fit in well perfectly. actually, you can see how it looks in my latest Universe update, where i have pictures of bridges over canals in Mailin.

Incredible cities you have there, utora! Those canals are just beautiful...and Berg Island too =)  They look like really cool places to live...congrats to Arenburg citizens on their latest growth spurt.  Personally, your canals look splendid already.  It's tough to work with the restrictions on diagonals, but I daresay you do a pretty good job of working around em nonetheless.  I think I shall be coming back here consistently =)

Geez! So many replies!! I promise to you all that I'll never complain about it again!9.gif
Iamrobk: Welcome to New Holland! Thought you'd never come to take a look! Thanx for the compliment!
Dannato: Thanx for the wonderful compliment: I try my best to make it diverse and yet consistent, so.. glad you like it! As for your own approach: you do a wonderful job in your cj. It's not only VERY pleasing to the eye, but also interesting stuff to read. About your imagination: I'm sure everything's all right with that, you've got plenty!
Nijntje123: there's an error in your avatar: it doesn't show up! I guess it will become clear what will happen with the new Nijmegen when I get to that part... don't worry
Raindog: I wasn't aware of the A'dam map, it looks stunning! A lot to learn still for me21.gif
Dargor: Thank you for the nice compliment! Your journal has been an inspiration to me..
MrCinatit: thanks for pointing to the bridge-height-mod; I might need it
Seville: welcometo NH; thanks for the compliment on the canals! Despite the game-limitations I'm trying to make the best of it; and it's cool that you enjoy that. Hope you'll stay in touch with NH for a long time!
subedei: You haven't seen the best part yet... beware of the coming updates!
superstar: welcome back! It's funny how things change all the time; I notice it myself when I visit a long forgotten journal. In a way I feel sorry for it; some landscapes that really turned out pretty are slowly but surely swallowed by the ever expanding sprawl. Well... there's no sprawl yet in NH, but you know what I mean. Fortunately I saved the old pics...
jonda1975: the story is the hardest part, it causes a lot of headaches from time to time..
flrscf: I created them with the terrain tools in mayormode. Just be accurate and patient.. But I won't use these in the cities; I'll stay to Oppie's canals. Glad you like them, though

Update 15: Messelmonde preparing for elections

The upcoming elections cast their shadow over Messelmonde. Every day one could see more billboards and advertisements in local newspapers, promoting the Messelmonde candidate: mayor Paul.

Paul had a major advantage over the other candidate, Conrad Vanderburg: it was Paul who saved Messelmonde from the floods a few years earlier, and he had achieved the unification of New Holland. Also, he had considerable powers over the NHID. The whole Utora family, which Paul was a member of, was widely known and recognized as a powerful and respectable family, their fame went as far as Ludlear they say...

Paul started his campaign in a brandnew Messelmonde. The whole town had been renewed and expanded. The strong rivalry with Arenburg didn

Another example of why Messelmonde is my favourite place in New Holland. The Mayor has certainly done a great job with all that expansion so quickly - I wonder what scandal is about to unfold......

Hehheh, I'm definitely staying with new Holland.  Messelmonde's newest residential section is another masterpiece of detailed planning.  The great thing about the city is that despite all the development, there's still a historical feel to it...
