4:24 pm BST today, apparently; at a healthy 8 lbs 6 oz.  Congratulations to William and Kate.  No news on the name yet.

 

Fun fact: it's the first time that four generations of British royalty are all living since the time of Queen Victoria.

An odd thought occurred to me.  Everyone is assuming that William and his son are in line for the throne but that may not be the case.  

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but, if Charles has a heart attack or whatever and dies before he is king, the next in line would be Andrew, correct?   And, after him, his daughter, Beatrice.   So, if the queen remains the queen and outlives Charles, William and his son get pushed to the side.

 

Did I get that right?

Not quite. It sounds like it would make sense, especially when thinking that if you have 3 sons or daughters they are all in line for the throne sequentially by birth, if the first born dies then it would move onto the next born. In the British monarchy however if the first born has a baby, then the child becomes next in line after the first born of the current monarch. If there are no more descendants from the first child, then the crown moves to the second born and their family.

Its difficult to explain, fortunately this video explains it much better than I could.

If Charles predeceases his mother, William will be the next monarch. The only way for Andrew's line to get the throne is if Charles's line (William, Harry, and the new baby so far) dies off.

Mind you, I don't think there is anything against one of the commonwealth realms passing their own law making Andrew, or William, or anyone else, their next king.

The recent change to the succession law just meant that the baby would remain ahead of any siblings, irrespective of sex. Under the old law, brothers ranked ahead of sisters first, then by age.

Oh, non-British Europeans also think the Brits are a bit weird when it comes to patriotism and the monarchy The Dutch are also considered somewhat weird Anyway, the 'crown' just changed in Belgium (in fact, there is no crown), so we've had a little craze too (not too much, we Belgians rarely get excited). I can understand why people are concerned with the monarchy, I felt a bit like that too on sunday (new king of Belgium), and I'm not even a monarchist!

Celebrities are celebrities.  At least they require them to do military service in England.  They do a lot more than some American celebrities do...

It would surprise the hell out of me.  Charles will be the next king barring his own demise.  If he dies before the Queen, Andrew is the next in line as Charles lines fails.

 

As the Queen becomes more frail, Charles is the stand in.  If she becomes incapable, then Charles will probably be named Prince Regent with the agreement of Parliament.

 

Unless you live in this monarchy, it is not obvious that the traditions that bind the firm are chains of titanium.

No, I thought the line of sucession passes to the first grandson of the first son if the son dies before the monarch, not the second son of the monarch.

Well I am presently residing in England and am three quarters British so... I guess I should be one of the flag waving people yelling madly at the gates of Buckingham Palace. The thing is, however, that I am not in favour of succession. I don't believe in inheritance, I believe in self-made men and women earning power and influence by their actions. Thus the monarchy... Is a touch backwards to me.

 

I am not against monarchies per se, but I believe the ruler should either be elected or should gain their position by their actions, whether this be in battle or in parliament.

Monarchies are not more expensive than republics, and they have a pacifying role in society (especially in divided countries like Belgium, yet another election might cause trouble in this country). Why change something if it is good enough, and when the alternative is not better?

You only have to look at that beacon of freedom and enlightenment ( ) the USA to see the grief that an elected, partisan head of state can cause. I'm by no means a monarchist, but I think there are definite benefits to having an apolitical figurehead at the top.

Not really.  That was between two factions that both had legitimate claims to the throne.  The winner, temporarily, was Richard III who was succeeded by conquest by Henry VII.  I think both the Plantagenet and the Tudor lines are extinct now.
