The reason for the 1920 x 1080 predominance is due to the fact that many monitors are made this way.  Mine is an LG W2442PA.

Imgur allows any resolution you want but it will compress images to 1mb, My 1920x1080 SC4 pics are greater than 1MB even when converted to .jpg so this will result in some loss of quality. (On the free account anyway)

-Sites like Majhost allow any size the be uploaded.

 

I wouldn't recommend sites like Photobucket, Webshots and Imageshack because their free accounts have restrictions like bandwidth limits, file size limits and resolution limits.

I am going to use a random picture from one of my cities. The filesize is 1.88MB after converting it to .jpg (it is 4.42mb as .png)

 

Here is the image on Majhost.

In addition, you can resize the image to 800 pixels wide and link the image to a full resolution picture.

 

Why would you post a resized picture on ST? Because they look better on-site (ST compresses images larger than 800px to 800px). However viewers still have the ability to view the full size image.

As you can see the quality of the two images on the post are about the same because they are less than 1mb (323kb)

Anyways this is how I do it. I will typically use Imgur for most pics but if I want to show detail I will switch to Majhost since there is no loss of quality.

 

 

TLDR: Use Imgur to upload images, it works well with 1920x1080 pics too.

I usually choose 80% for conversion, so my jpg's are significantly smaller than 1 MB. As far as I know, the quality loss on proper conversion is mostly in color depth. As I cannot see that properly, I can't really judge the impact of the quality loss.
