I am now planning out my city format, and I am wondering how much room will skyscrapers take up? What is the ideal space?

However big or small you want your downtown to be. The largest Maxis building lots are about 5 by 5 I think... Although none of my cities are large enough. Six by six would definitely allow the largest to develop.

I thought Maxis buildings developed to 4x4 maximum. But I'm not sure, it might be 5x5 as well. I have custom buildings for skyscrapers, the lot sizes of those buildings are mentioned in the readme.

When I build a CBD I'm beginning in the standard grid. At the moment that my city is big enough I change the grid and build plopable skyscrapers. A lot of skyscrapers have jobs as well and it gives you a lot of control on how you want your city to look. The standard RCI rules are still valid.

There's a list here that documents the different lot sizes of the standard RCI buildings. Most of the large stage 7 & 8 skyscrapers will take up an area of 4x4. But if you use any, some custom BATs, will require a larger zone size. For this information, check the content's documentation / lot details.

To plan for the development of your CBD, one method is to use precision zoning techniques. This can provide the optimum zone size for high stage buildings to develop, while restricting smaller ones. For example, CO-$$$ blocks of 4x4 could be zoned by holding the Ctrl key. However, to achieve development, buildings of this stage and capacity require a sustained level of demand. Passing the demand caps is a prerequisite. Also, the area must have a high land value. So just keep this in mind when planning to build onwards and upwards. Until the conditions are suitable for any lot type, the precision zones will remain unoccupied.

General rule of thumb for Maxis skyscrapers: 3 x 3, 4 x 3, 3 x 4, 4 x 4.  On 5 x 5 or 6 x 6 you get shopping centres.

I like to leave a gap between my skyscrapers so that I can lay plazas and flower parks so that desirability is high enough to get skyscrapers. So I generally go for 9x12 (fitting six 4x4 zones in one block.) Heres my incredibly unrealistic and unfinished CBD.

    Good luck. :)
