Mods on original simcity

So I heard that you need rush hour to install mods, is that true?

For the majority of custom content, I'm afraid so. The vanilla game is extremely limited, and is only compatible with lots which use Maxis buildings as props (mostly from 2003).

Rush Hour / Deluxe is required to use all BATs and most recent mods such as the NAM.

No because it is incomplete.  For the same bucks as a copy of Rush Hour or less you can get the digital download of Deluxe from amazon or gamersgate.  This comes completely patched and diskless, ready to go. 

 

Save your existing user area, install the new deluxe, and copy your user area back. 

 

If you put in rush hour, you need two published patches and you must then run with the play disk in your optical drive.  Damned nuisance in this day and age.

umm.. I have just installed SC4 to 64 bit W7, updated it with two patches, and then installed Rush Hour. Then I went to the mods page here to download the launcher mod so I can set the cpu to 1 - and while I was there I saw the offer to receive a DVD of mods for a donation, so opted for Disk 3 and paid.... and now I am wondering if I  will have to get the Steam version before I can  use any of the mods - is that right?

Mods and BATs work with any version of the game with Rush Hour or SC4 Deluxe. You should of course install all the patches. But it isn't relevant for custom content to work if the game is from Steam or Gamersgate or from a cd,...

If you have the deluxe version on disc you can also download the patch. You can find this patch at the STEX (drop down-menu --> official patches).

it doesn't say 'deluxe', so I am thinking I need to get the download from GG or Steam I have applied the two european patches though..

No!  SC4 + Rush Hour = Deluxe.  Not different in any way.  However, if you want the digital download for deluxe get it from gamersgate or amazon unless you already have a Steam account.  The dd for deluxe is version 1,1,641.  Fully patched and diskless.

oh! OK then, goody. Thank you I might get it off Steam or GG sometime, but having just spent  all me pennies on the donation, I will go on  using the disc for now.

Yeah, patched discs work just as well as a download.  And Vanilla + Rush Hour is in no way different from Deluxe.  All mods and custom content should work with any of these situations.
