I've heard that Ireland doesn't have a ratings system. That sounds like rumor. As for censorship, my hate for it grows by the second, but particularly around Christmas. Ugh. Can' stand all this political correctness.

Some things are inappropriate for children and material intended for them does have to keep this in mind. What's ridiculous is that in some countries there are things you can't do in a movie, video game, etc. even if it's intended for adults.

My friend tells me they censored the crap out of One Piece when they dubbed it into English. One Piece sucks anyways, so I don't know how they could make it worse.

2255: Don't tell my brother that!

Also his Japan exchange got cancelled.

Monty Python's Life of Brian was banned for a few years in Norway. In Sweden they made ads for the movie with "so funny that the Norwegians banned it!".

(In Belgium, it's also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Not that I've ever seen it.)

Anime in general tends to get censored the hell out of when dubbed into English because it tends to contain lots of things which the US doesn't consider appropriate for kids or even appropriate for TV at all. Sailor Moon famously contained two girls in a lesbian relationship, in the US they were changed to being "cousins". Pokemon contained lots of blood and swear words, all were edited out of the English version. And, back to the Rockman.EXE anime, let's see... there was an episode featuring a bunch of the characters dressing in drag that was cut entirely from the English dub. There were a few scenes involving mild nudity that were cut from the English dub (This is a very stark cultural difference: Japan considers naked prepubescent children to be completely unoffensive, the US is like "ZOMG child porn!").

The only time English dubs of anime really stay true to the original is when they are targeted at a more mature audience - see, for example, Princess Mononoke. All the blood and everything is still in the dub! From what I've seen the dub of Azumanga Daioh was not hyper-sanitized either (they left the swear words in, to the degree they could on American TV), but I can't say whether there weren't other things changed.

This is likely part of the reason why my university's anime society only shows subbed anime. I know licensing issues is another one of the reasons, although it did make a deal with Madman Entertainment about showing things they've licensed.

They don't show anything with nudity at all, although they are OK with violence (extreme violence is preceded by a warning).

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Anime in general is just a Japanese cartoon, funny how people think otherwise. :P

Indeed, any localization is likely to be altered in a way the creators did not intend. As for licensing issues... yeah, some companies can get weird about you taking their DVDs and showing them to a large group. You wouldn't think there'd be anything wrong with that but apparently DVDs are supposed to be for personal use only, if you want to show something in public you need to get special permission and possibly pay royalties (copyright law is weird).

Of course, you can always show fansubs... which are totally unlicensed but which give you access to material normally not available in your country.

Also, why does extreme violence need a warning when it's adults watching? Viewer warnings are supposed to be for if children may be watching, for an entirely 18+ audience it shouldn't matter.

I've started playing SC4 again, after a long break.

There are a few under-18's who show up, although mostly it's to avoid any potential problems if we didn't put the warning in and someone complained.

As far as I know the licensing covers all broadcast rights in any form, including fansubs, so we take care on that front. The deal was struck after Madman licensed a series while we were halfway through.

Here in Greece we call them χελωνονιντζακια (helononinjakia), which can be translated as Little Turtle Ninjas. As about censorship, we have some of it too. Many books and theatrical plays has been withdrawn because of their religion theme, while the TV shows are censoring themselves in the fear of the extremely high fines.

In Japan, everyone is Japanese, so there is kind of an unwritten rule as to what is and isn't acceptable.  There was a big fuss a few years ago about a festival in Kanagawa putting posters up in trains because one of the men on the poster had his shirt off and he had chest hair like a real man.  There was a media controversy as to whether or not this was okay to do, but it ran out of steam after a few days and I still saw the posters from time to time.

Idealized images of men usually feature waxed chests over in the US as well. Despite that being ridiculous because very few men actually do that.

But if someone put up an ad featuring a hairy chested man, no one would complain... it just might not be as effective as an advertisement.

Now, a woman with legs not shaved? That people would complain about, as it is actually socially unacceptable for women to have hairy legs.

I think in Japan it has more to do with chest hair being considered along the lines of pubic hair, and that is a no-go here.  The Japanese are not so prudish, but values pressed upon them by MacArthur and his command forced them to do more covering of themselves in public and in the media.

Not to change subject, but I have to tell this.

At Thanksgiving dinner, my uncle showed me my recently deceased Aunt's autograph book. He went through various names. There was the Phillies and A/' from the 40's. he then turned the page and pointed to one name. It just blew my mind. It simply read... Jackie Robinson. My aunt got the signature of Jackie Robinson, Connie Mack, Stan Musuil, Joe DiMaggio, Leo Durocher, and the list goes on. Absolutely amazing.

That is one awesome list, Mr Saturn64.

And while the controversy about the chest hair actually happened, they let the posters slide.  Although now I don't see any posters with men's hairy chests on it.  Most Japanese men tend to have bare chests anyways.  Me and my hairy body are an oddity on beaches here.

Street fairs in New York 20 years ago were fun and interesting. These days they're all mundane and boring, all the nutty things that used to make them special disappeared along with the gentrification of the city.

A rather disturbing fact: at the beginning of every year the city puts out to auction a set number of permits for street fairs for the coming summer. All are sold to the highest bidder. It generally used to be the case that community organizations (churches, whatever) would end up buying the permits for their neighborhoods. These days there's a private company in the game that bids aggressively and ends up buying something ridiculous like 95% of the permits. So they have a near monopoly on street fairs and no motivation to make them not boring.

The future has always sucked.  People are people whether it was a hundred years ago or yesterday.  I used to work at this little family-owned grocer in my college town.  I was living with my wife at the time, but we weren't married, and I was a bit embarrassed about it when I talked to my very sweet, elderly lady co-worker.  Then she said something that really changed my perspective.  She laughed and said, "Ah, honey, we've ALL done that stuff before."  Just because most pictures from before the war were staid and boring doesn't mean the people were, too.  We just didn't get to see them doing the same stuff we're doing.  They had to deal with the robber-barons and the roaring 20s and the idiots who thought partying like Gatsby was a good thing (it wasn't, read the book again, idiots) and the Great Depression.  So the future sucks just like it always did.  But it could also be pretty great, depending on how you want to look at it.  It all depends on your perspective.

But I guess depictions of the future have been around forever, but now that it's a new millennium, they seem to me that they were said to happen, even though its really sci-fi. After all, the 1986 Transformers movie takes place in 2003.
