It's funny how the conversation shifts from peanut butter to a discussion about the differences between conjugations and conjunctions.

Speaking of technology, do you think that Google Glass will catalyse a boom in smartglasses e.g. Samsung Galaxy Glass, ISpecs etc. (LOL)

My mouse just plugs into the USB port and takes its power from there.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

If something like Google Glass ever becomes popular, texting while driving will become a miniscule problem compared to glassing while driving. I for one do not look forward to people having yet another persistent distraction.

Texting while driving is stupid enough, but if you're going to depend on having Google Glass tell you how to drive, you should be banned from the roads.

Wow. The desire to be totally free from censorship and control trumps all other concerns in America, I guess :S

Maybe anarchists will take over the entire government one day. Then I'd really NOT want to go there anymore, not even for a short trip as a tourist.

I see attitudes in the US about profanity slowly changing. Circumstances where it was once unthinkable, it is now commonplace. There's more of it on TV (up to a point, since the nastiest words are banned on broadcast TV), people use it in the office...

Perhaps most tellingly, independent online news sources are not following the old journalism standards of decency that you never print a bad word without censoring it. Indeed, some bloggers swear like sailors.

In a way I think the internet has contributed significanctly to our generation being more accepting of profanity. Since, on much of the web, swearing is allowed to become a frequent thing because normal real world standards of decency are left unenforced, people who spend a decent amount of time online get quickly desensitized to it.

I always thought it was stupid to have "bad words" What is the point? And who and who did it and how did it become bad?

The word in question from what I know came from German loosely translated meaning "To Strike"

Callous use of foul language has triggered untold violence throughout the course of human history. (Not big wars like WWI and WWII, of course, but less "historically remarkable" instances such as skirmishes and homicides.)

I've tended to shy away from using profanity in my writing because in many circumstances it just doesn't make sense.  But in a conversation of a bunch of college students?  It seems that every other word I write is foul in some way.  Cursing doesn't make me as uncomfortable as it does my parents, but I do try not to do it so much.  My boss and the other foreign teacher in my town, they like cursing, especially together, a whole lot more than I do.  They're like 10 years older than me, and I just feel a bit odd if I use foul language in their company, regardless of whether or not they do.

I don't think it was ever intended as a fact to be taken literally. The point is that when you react to people teasing you, you encourage them to continue, and therefore it is best to respond to teasing by ignoring it/not letting yourself get bothered by it. If they can't get a rise out of you then it stops being fun to tease you.

The problem then is, while this was true for thousands of years of human history, and was still true when we were taught it, in the 21st century the advent of cyberbullying has changed the game entirely. It is now often not possible to make bullying stop by just ignoring it. It can now easily escalate to a level that requires explicit adult intervention.

Nonetheless, I would still say that in general a lot of people are too easily offended. I mean, if someone is deliberately insulting you personally, then yes, by all means, get offended! But when people start getting offended by things which were obviously never intended to offend, it is simply inane. All it does is spoil everyone's fun by making people have to be hyper-careful when they speak.

And, of course, swearing is not at all the same thing as teasing/insulting someone. As two circles in a Venn Diagram they do overlap, but they are distinct.

. There's cursing everywhere i go. School? Yup. Downtown? Yup. At the ballpark? Yup. The streets of this barren suburbia? Yup. Just people out here trying to be "gangsta"
