But hey!  It's a monorail!

We don't talk about the monorail anymore. You're a Simpsons fan, right?

I dunno. The only monorail I've been on is the one at Disneyworld. But I think monorail would be more efficient than light rail, just don't have elevated heavy rail, that's inviting disaster

So what's the difference between light rail and monorail? Wouldn't a monorail be a type of light rail?

Yes, this is kitty.

A monorail runs on one rail (derp). One design consequence of this is that at grade crossings with roads or paths are not possible. It doesn't have to be elevated but it does have to be grade separated (in practice, however, it is usually elevated). Monorail is thus definitely a form of heavy rail, albeit one which hasn't seen much real world use due to the fact that switches are difficult to work with when you only have one rail (so if your system is more complicated than having a train run back and forth between two points or around a loop, it doesn't work too well).

Light rail is "light" in the sense that it involves shorter trains that do not weigh as much. Because of their small size/weight they can take tighter curves and steeper hills than regular trains, and can stop and start a lot faster, which makes it possible for them to mingle with street traffic for parts of their route - because unlike a regular train, a light rail train can stop in basically the same distance a bus can, and thus can yield to other vehicles when necessary (whereas a regular train traveling at any reasonable speed cannot stop fast enough to avoid hitting an unexpected obstruction on the tracks no matter how hard the driver applies the brakes).

Light rail can sort of be thought of as a souped up version of old-fashioned trolley cars which were common before diesel-powered buses were invented.

Uh...  No....  It's a little embarrassing, but when I was working at my friend's comic book store, I was the ONLY one of us who wasn't a Simpsons fan.  It's still a little embarrassing.

Duke's explanation was awesome.

Also, has anyone yet had to be reminded to watch their post count number?  Or are we doing exceptionally well in this thread?

We've had a couple of off-by-one errors, but nothing major.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Dunno if anyone's noticed, but when someone posts the wrong number or no number I've just been quietly editing the post to fix it. ;) Other than astro's post which I will leave because it loses effect if I fix it (:P), there should not be any errors in this thread.

I don't generally check the numbers before my previous post in the thread.

I do, however, notice that DXXVII is 527, not 526. :P

Often I post without numbers and then edit it with the current number to prevent being sniped.

I have noticed some Blue numbers here and there. I assume those are the edited ones.

Yaps, that's it. I noticed it in a post by Yoshi on the previous page where he had forgotten to mention the number. The number later 'magically' appeared in blue. Wonder how that happened!

Hockey is a complete yawn unless it's the Wings.  Aw heck, I'd root for most Canadian teams, too.

I see that this thread is under fairly good management then.  I hope I don't (or haven't) end up as one of the screw ups!

I watch soccer (a bit) when the national team plays. And when it is the final of the European Championship or the World Cup. That makes 4 matches a year or so? Seems enough :P
