WOW! What a tornado! Look at that destruction. I think its fun to see disasters like that occur in a city journal. Hopefully it'll all be repaired soon!

BTW - What part of New Jersey are you in? Are you off 80, or to the south of that towards Six Flags?

Posting the Page 13 Table of Contents:

Mikeaut: Thanks. I liked making that tornado update, so I might make a hurricane/flood, nor'easter, or lightning update....we'll see.

I live in the northern part of the state, it's more rural than not, not urban, and a good distance from NYC. Sorry though, I can't disclose my exact location or county. I'm not off by Six Flags, but South Jersey is really nice, at least in my opinion. It's much less developed than North Jersey. As you can see, I like rural places more than urban in real life, but in SC4, its a different story. 10.gif

Hmmm...can't disclose your location...you must be a government spy! OMG!! Just kidding...I think. Well, I can tell you all that I live in Northern Ontario and it is FREEZING!

    King: Thanks. 10.gif

RHF: Well, Northern Ontario isn't any more specific than Northern New Jersey. I guess we're both government spies, except you're a Canadian and, well, I'm an American. It's not too warm here, either, so good thing I like the cold so much.

BTW, Family Guy is a great show. It's always a good reminder to see Stewie every time you post...make sure you don't change your avatar. 3.gif

    To All:

The final Marshland update showing what happens after the tornado will come either tommorow morning or tommorow afternoon.

JJ: Thanks. The Marshland tornado update was one of the most fun ones to make. Although I don't think the sims would agree with me.

    jacqulina: Thanks.

    To All:

The Marshland update should be posted during the afternoon. 10.gif

    MARSHLAND REBUILDS

The Old Town Recovers From the Tornado

The rebuilding of Marshland after the tornado will come later. But first, a very detailed history lesson on the town:

Marshland quickly grew up in the early 1700's as a fine port town. It was also a storm haven for mariners who seeked refuge during powerful storms. Marshland thrived as a colonial town, and was one of the most successful towns in Pinewood County. During one very powerful hurricane during the 1700's, when all of Ocean Point was under water, Marshland was the place that many of the region's sims flocked to for protection. This is because of the Marshland Neck, a strip of land that protects Marshland from flooding. It is described later in this history.

Later on in history, other towns such as Ocean Point, Great Bend and Baytown became more successful and Marshland wasn't the same anymore. Mariners could just as easily head up the Pinewood River to Great Bend during fierce storms, as it was much better protected than Marshland, sitting on the bay. Ocean Point and Baytown developed thriving commercial districts and great fishing industries. By the late 1800's and early 1900's, Marshland had fallen behind to the point that it was just another dot on the map.

Marshland then became a run down little town, with the only farming left in the whole county, and mostly low wealth citizens. However, like most towns, it had its glory. Routes 19 and 82 brought plenty of sims through the town, which led to a large commercial area in the town's downtown, along those two routes. Hotels, big box stores and fast food chains filled up the lots along the two highways, especially Route 82. Most of this growth occured between the mid 1900's and the present. Some nice residential developments lined the bay, and a ferry station was built for commuters. Marshland citizens aren't as concerned as others in the region about flooding from a hurricane, tropical storm, nor'easter, or any other storm that can, and has in the past, devastate coastal Pinewood County. This is because the Marshland Neck, a strip of land that protects Marshland from Marshland Bay, takes most of the flooding. Northeasterly winds during nor'easters, for example, pile water onto Marshland Neck, often making the portion of Route 82 on the Neck unaccessable. However, it takes an extemely powerful storm for the Marshland Neck to give out and allow floodwaters into Marshland.

Now, onto the tornado and the rebuilding after it:

When the tornado hit Marshland, the town was devastated. It hadn't been doing very well up until that point. But the tornado really shook up the town. However, that didn't mean that the loyal Marshlanders were just going to abandon the town that they had lived in all their life. Many of them descended from the very first Marshlanders in the early 1700's.

Marshland recovered from the tornado, and moved in a direction taken by the rest of the region. It allowed suburban/rural sprawl, and a larger commercial area, which would allow the town to thrive. Well, everyting worked out, and now Marshland is as good as its ever been. This is what Marshland looks like today.

    marshlandnow4gt.jpg

Downtown Marshland has had explosive development. The commercial sector in this town has let Marshland become a more region and county-wide recognized town.

    dtmarshland0hr.jpg

Western Marshland was devastated by the tornado, but it has been rebuilt to beyond its past glory.

    westmarshland0tl.jpg

New development in Marshland along the bay has been welcomed in the town. This new subdivision has turned into a nice neighborhood, with good views of the bay and the town.

    newdevelopment1sw.jpg

This area of the Marshland Neck was stripped of its trees by the tornado. The new saplings growing there show that this area will soon become a forest again.

    newtrees3ia.jpg

Well, I hope you enjoyed that update, and that I didn't bore you to death. You might not see Marshland again for a while, as this is its third consecutive update, but it'll be back. I'm not sure which town will be updated next, although I can say that a much improved Ocean Point will be shown in an update pretty soon. 10.gif

King: Thanks. I'm definately considering downloading the NAM. However, I haven't made any decisions yet, so I haven't made up my mind. I'll check back and read over what it is so I can get a better feel for whether I should download it or not. If I remember right, than the NAM does something with the capacity or speed limit or something of transportation networks. So that might hold me back from getting it, but we'll see. 10.gif

I would recommend getting the NAM, personally. Wow, Marshland looks a lot better than before! I like your downtowns, they're not skyscraper forests but they are still memorable. Great job.

If you don't want it to cahange the capacity and stuff, you don't have to use those files.
Anyways, this is looking very nice! Good work!

RHF: Thanks. I probably will get the NAM, with everyone reccomending it and all, but it's not a definate yet.

your_adress_here: Thanks for the compliments and input on the NAM. So basically, I would just delete the files I don't want to use out of my plugins folder? I might need some help on what to delete and what not to, but that'll come when I download it (If I do, which I probably will).

    Mikeaut: Thanks for the compliments.

DragonAnime: Thanks. And again, thanks for putting the link in your sig. 10.gif

    To All:

I've decided the next update will be on Bay Cove, and should come by tommorow afternoon. Bay Cove, a growing town on the island's west shore of Marshland Bay, is one of the towns which has seen a major turnaround in the past. However, this town hasn't had many major changes in a while. Still, it is one of the nicest towns in the region, with residential only zoned low density, and one of the more realistic transportation networks in the region. It also has some nice bayfront properties. 10.gif

You know, I was just about to make a comment similar to what Socorocks had said earlier about the connectivity and block sizes in some of your areas. I'm glad that's straightened out now. 1.gif I myself tried some fancy street layouts early on to avoid the grid, as so many people like to say. But ultimately, realism for me consists of orthogonal intersections and ease of access. For me, this is possible, even without getting a grid look. So I've been going back and fixing some of those errors, but a lot of it is quite built up just as with yours. Hey, we build how we know, right? 1.gif Ultimately, that's how different regions get their unique looks, and yours certainly has a unique look!

I've been away for a bit and missed the whole tornado thing, but everything's looking great here!

    Hey Comdude,

Coming myself from a region bordering a great river where most of the towns and villages, are either on, or near, the shore I must say that I'm partial to those little towns.

I'd like to have you storytelling talent and to be able to be as well structured in my CJ 16.gif This is a job well done! 44.gif

    Keep it up!

oroen: Thanks for the compliments. I think the conclusion that I've come to is that I use too many roads and don't have as much room for development. I've also done some crazy things while trying to avoid the grid. However, those weird block sizes, although they are weird and probably unrealistic, do give some towns a character. I think it helps with the fact that most of these towns were founded in colonial times. I've taken a lot of ideas from your journal as well, for inspiration. So thanks for the input, it really helps. 10.gif

Darmok: Thanks for the compliments. I guess my storytelling has gotten better and better as this CJ has gone on. But the one thing I won't be able to do is give stories for individual sims- I'm just not good at that.

Like I said before, I get much inspiration from jour journal so it is great to hear from you here. 29.gif

It's really simple. The file names are like 2x capacity and 5x commute. Really simple.

Anyways, I can't wait to see the next update!

Hey comdude, I put a link to Ocean Point in my sig! I just thought that everybody should see this great CJ, and I'm trying to get the message out that this is one of the best CJs out there! (Sorry, I would have said this is the best, but you're right behind Nexis...that's still awesome. Besides, who can beat Nexis?)

your_adress_here: Thanks for the compliments and for clearing that up for me. I'll download the NAM soon, but I can't do it right away. But I can't wait to see it in action.

RHF: Thanks for putting the link in your sig! That is an honor, I am very thankful you put the link in. Although I don't think I'm ever going to try to compete with Nexis of Genesis, being right behind it is perfect. So thanks for putting the link in your sig, that really is an honor.

Speedy: Thanks for the compliments. And I'm pretty shocked that this is on Page 13 too. 3.gif

jimbob: Thanks. Since I am going for realism above all else, that means something.

    To All:

I was just playing the game a lot when it crashed to the desktop. Needless to say, the update might be delayed a little bit. However, it should still be ready sometime today.

Great update. I think its good the way you didn't 'wimp out' and not save, just so you could enjoy destroying the city (It's ok, we all do11.gif) but you saved it sso that you could rebuild.
