Top this. Three tornadoes. one meteor shower, one zombie attack, one flying saucer, and the flipping lizard.  All in two hours. :thumb:

How about 4 zombie attacks? That's basically the equivalent of all of those combined, considering each one kills a quarter of a city.

You know the past two zombie attacks in my city with a 95% approval rating, no zombie deaths.

Also during zombie attack, never demolish an abondoned building where people got OM NOM'd.  Tons of zombies spill out of the house.  :D

One time I had a zombie attack that killed 40,000 people. I'm not even kidding. I did demolish houses though...silly me. :P

Quantity of attacks is one thing, but I've had an army of lizard attacks and every single time they did almost no damage. A handful of rci buildings needed to be dozed, but that's it. Then one time, he ran through the entire city and literally killed my police/health/fire/education buildings. I've also had a meteor strike cause 400 fires...totally not cool.

Same here suddenly ...

Lizard takes out university, hospital, two recycle facilities, three trade depos, police precinct...

I'm not even finished rebuilding that ... meteor shower ... takes out highschool, university again, sets fire to tons of other stuff ...

Working on getting that fixed ... tornado tears half of it up again ...

Everything back and running (sorta) ... i log off, come back  less than an hour later, the above repeats itself ...

edit - had enough of that - at least I moved the university to another location. The lizard COULD be a little more random...

Thank goodness I've got a ton of funds sitting there (for now...)

What's up with that?

I managed to some damage control for other kinds of disaster. But not lizards. It's just impossible. Whenever it appears, it literally walks through the buildings that are most important in the city. So far, out of 7 lizard attacks, 2 of them walked right into nuclear power plant. :(

What do the flying saucers do? (i'm new so bear with me) I get those a lot, but they don't seem to do anything other than scare the snot out of people.

Granted I don't have big cities, I think the latest one it hit was a city of 200,000 but I don't think it did much damage.

The meteor showers almost made me cry. The first time I built a processor factory, had him up and running, but was out of resources. I didn't know what I was doing at all. I had built a trade depot, port or wahtever with buttloads of alloy storage units. I dind't have a recycling center, didn't know that worked at the time.

But I finally, for the first time get over a million in the treasury  with no bonds out. I had my huge depot set to import alloy. I maxed out the units. I also just happneed to have a cargo ship dock on the warehouse.

The meteors came in and just destroyed everything around my processor building. but didn't hit it. yay!!!!!

Then a cargo ship came in chocked full of alloy, and drained my entire million dollars (i think it was over) to pay for it. I dind't realize the ship was coming.

Since then I have learned how to properly stage those depots, but man... meteor shower... I survive!!! then  lost every penny I had to pay for the alloy. hahaha

I was heartbroken. I guess that's when I learned to read up on how to do things. I was throwing depots and ports everywhere.

Thank god my bonds were clean because it took most of the day for me to rebuild things, and I'm still not fully recovered.

The biggest problem I have is, I'm not a gamer, the last game I played believe it or not, was Quake III Arena, and was very serious. cash tournaments with teaems etc. But when i stopped that I haven't played a game since until now. But I get so involved I completelly lose track of time, often sitting for 8 to 10 hours without even noticing.

boy, I'm saying a lot of things...

Don't like random disasters! A meteor strike went right into the middle of my high density high wealth! When the city was chocked with traffic! City just died after that! They need to stop random disasters!

whats worse is that the meteor shower that hit my city left a radioactive pollution right in the middle of my most expensive district...

Disasters could be entertaining if they weren't so frequent, and sometimes so costly that they'll all but bankrupt your city. Last night I had about $1k and had to sit and watch as my 1 fire truck tried to put out fires from a meteor shower... I guess what I did learn is that when a meteor or 5 do hit your city, pause as soon as the fires break out, destroy the adjacent buildings and de-zone, or make roads to "quarantine" the buildings on fire (I don't think fires jump across streets, not sure though). In trying to avoid 4-way intersections my city has/had a lot of buildings next to each other.

I have lots of disasters as well ! They happen a lot in this simcity.

I had more disasters in one month of simcity 2013 than in 10 years of simcity 4 !

I mostly just hate the saucers -- 'cause they can run off with something small -- like a school bus stop -- which is pretty darn hard to notice.

Also -- the rare meteor that leaves a radioactive splotch behind -- that's a royal pain in the ass.

Oh yeah, and the earthquake that knows when you've been saving up computers for the 4.5mil HQ unlock. Yeah, that one I hate.

I've got 90 hours of gameplay in so far and have had maybe 3-4 disasters (no I'm not playing in sandbox, either). Weird that some people are having such a problem with them.....

..now just for saying this I'll have them constantly this weekend when I play. :golly:

I've had a zombie apocalypse that wasn't all that apocalyptic, a leaping lizard attack that managed to walk through most of my cities without harming them, and I think that might be it.

I too find it weird that some individual are having so many disasters.

I too started having the same problem with multiple earthquakes and lizards on the only city I'm working on. Decided to abandon the region and start the same city from scratch in sandbox mode without the unrealistic lizards and zombie attacks. Now my new city is filled with homeless and people out of money for no reason, WTF?

By now it should be apparent that the random number generator isn't so random.  I played this morning and got  a tornado and another meteor shower,  Once while the Lizard was leaping, I  quit the game completely,  and restarted, It took me back in game time and then fed me the Lizard again, in the same place.  I would say over the seventeen years of game time in this city I have been hit with maybe 20 or thirty.  I just ignore zombie attacks and the spaceship.  This classifies as not fun.  I tweeted the devs.  I'm not holding my breath.  Still though, if they patch it it could end up being a fun game.  So when I get frustrated I go tinker with CIM2.    I've been irradiated twice.  I have learned you can build on radiation spots.  I put a dormitory on one and a bus terminal on another.

The problem is, disasters can be destructive enough to kill the entire region once it hits the right place. I had one of the region (not city!) depending on one city's nuclear power, and lizard attacked; leaving one radiated chernobyl and no power for entire region. Managed to build all the electronics factory in the radiated city, and lizard attacked again, came out right next to nuclear power plant. Now I even lost the proper education level to run the power plant.

What an awesome guy! Fry all your students and poor people riding busses :) Kidding. Good to know. i thought radiated land was pretty much worthless.

Can you tell me what the flying saucers actually do? i see them lighting up a building so I clicked it and the little saucer left.  That was probably coincidence. But what does it actually do to the city in reagards to damage other than scaring sims?

I have no idea, sometimes things or people are missing.  And the poor sims probably never get to much of a dose since the same one never sets there twice.

    According to the prima guide

Description: Randomly destroys a building, abducts Sims, or steals resources from storage lots.

Who are they? Where do they come from? It’s unclear what these otherworldly visitors want from your city. The objective of each visit is random. Sometimes a UFO appears overhead and annihilates a random building. Other times UFOs only abduct Sims or steal resources from one of your storage lots. But despite their mischievous behavior, visitations by a UFO produce a burst of skill similar to a University, encouraging the creation of high tech (tech level 3) buildings in industrial zones. When abducting Sims, the UFO also has a high chance of targeting criminals in jails at your Police Station or Police Precinct. So if you’re facing an overcrowding jail situation, it may be time for a visit from a UFO. But it’s impossible to tell what will happen when the UFO appears over your city—it may very well blow away your entire Police Precinct!

Wow now that's interesting. The little green men could be good for me :)

Speaking of luck, i just had that damn lizard hit me. I spent a LONG time balancing out things, making my factories happy, rearranging streets. All on one corner..

then BLAM, breaking news.. big liz is in town. But i could not have been happier. Even though he took down my loaded police precint, he only hit one factory, only hit one smoke stack on my second coal power plant, and destroyed my stadium. Ignored my trade ports, my processor factory all just left me better than it could have been.

Still though, look at this swath of destruction. holy crud

    KdZyz1I.jpg

this could have been so much worse..

EDIT: Christ, spoke too soon. Not even an hour after this I got hit by a big earthquake.

EDIT: Christ, spoke too soon. Not even an hour after this I got hit by a big earthquake.

The rest of the disasters in the prima guide starting with earthquakes

Did you feel that? The violent shaking of an earthquake will definitely get your attention as buildings crumble into piles of rubble and numerous fires breakout across the city. Once the shaking stops, make sure you have enough fire coverage to contend with all the blazes popping up around the earthquake’s epicenter. An earthquake won’t destroy every building, but the spread of fires could lead to a secondary disaster even more destructive than all that shaking. When triggering an earthquake of your own, be prepared for the widespread destruction to follow, ensuring any buildings you wish to spare are outside the affected area, marked in red. Earthquakes can also occur randomly, particularly in mountainous areas.

What could be cooler than a giant fire-breathing lizard stomping through your city? This red dragon-like reptile tunnels out of the ground beneath your city and begins marching, in a linear path, directly toward the nearest Garbage Dump. Along the way the big lizard destroys every building in its path, occasionally stopping to roar and ignite nearby buildings with fire. The big lizard concludes its visit to your city by consuming garbage at your Garbage Dump before eventually returning to its subterranean lair. Triggering a Big Lizard attack can be a useful way to clear a path through some unwanted buildings—it’s certainly more entertaining than bulldozing. When choosing a point for the big lizard to enter your city, take into account the proximity to the nearest Garbage Dump, because your new friend will make a beeline for that lovely collection of garbage, destroying every building along the way.

This spectacular disaster is better than any fireworks show. Watch as swarms of meteorites descend on your city, crashing into buildings and starting fires. When triggering this disaster on your own, place the wide red radius over a targeted area of your city and kick back and watch the destruction. Regardless of how this disaster is triggered you’ll need good fire coverage to put out all those fires. Meteors also have a chance of leaving behind ground pollution and radiation, potentially making the site unlivable.

The tornado is likely the first disaster you’ll unlock, rewarded after placing 24 turbine module at a Wind Power Plant. Consider giving the tornado a whirl before your city gets too beautiful. While you can choose the starting position of a tornado, there’s no way to control where it goes once it touches down in your city. The tornado wanders randomly throughout your city, destroying every building in its path. Given its unpredictable nature, the tornado isn’t the most precise disaster if you’re looking to clear some space in a specific area. Like all disasters, tornadoes have a chance of appearing on their own—if your city is set in an open plain, there’s a greater chance of a tornado appearing.

Beware of green glowing zombies emerging from the Hospital at night. These nocturnal brain-eating ghouls feed on the brains of innocent Sims, leading to the creation of more zombies with each encounter. Your police force will have their hands full trying to contain this outbreak. Fortunately, when the sun rises, all zombies crumble, bringing an end to this terror. Unlike the other major disasters, zombie attacks do not damage any buildings. But the nightly death toll is reported in the morning, tallying the number of unfortunate Sims who met a gruesome fate.

Aready covered the UFO's, but I'll quote it again so the disaster list is all on the same post

That leaves the last two disasters which are random and will happen if the conditions are right for them.

    • Nuclear Meltdown: If a Nuclear Power Plant is staffed by uneducated workers, there’s an increased chance of a nuclear meltdown, spreading radioactive ground pollution over a wide radius around the power plant. Radiation dissipates over time, but a large portion of your city will remain unlivable until then.

    • Plague: A reliance on mass transit can lead to the outbreak of a plague, putting serious strain on your Clinics and Hospitals as sick Sims seek treatment. Untreated sick Sims will become injured. If there aren’t enough ambulances to go around, these injured Sims will die.

An earthquake and tornado further along and it's kinda fun to see the guide talk that way.  You think developer of  a 2k by 2k map would have said to themselves, that since water, sewer, power and trash work best when sited together, having the Lizard head for you trash dump falls on the side of poor reasoning.  I'd like to have the Lizard rampage through  Dan Moskowitz's officetwice a day.  It's really kind of amusing.  Here in Kentucky when we have cities that get flooded too often we move them or protect them, in the game you can do neither.  Oh well, here's hoping they fix it.

I suppose the real flaw of this disaster system in Simcity didn't consider how small the city tile is . Whatever kinds of disaster strikes, even it's something really minor like tornado focus-firing on one part of the city, that small blip on the city is more likely to be important part of the city as city itself is constrained in a small size. I mean, if the tile was big enough, why would anyone want to have a nuclear reactor right next to waste disposal, dragging all the lizards to reactor?

I got hit again by the Lizard.  I'm trying a new tactic.  I deleted my dump and just kept the incinerator.  I figure if you don't feed the troll Lizard he may not come.  I'll let anyone who is interested know.

it's nice to know how a meltdown happens. I had one in sandbox mode when i was learning the game. Never used a nuclear plant since then. But now that I know why it happend I might replace my coal plant in my tech city since it's well educated.

So far what it looks like to me, is if your city is in very good balance, and money is good, they happen. almost like the game doesn't want you to get bored when you get it right.

I had a small population (compared to you pros) of about 200,000, positive income of about 8k, great profits from the processor factory, very happy industrial with high education and tech. things were rolling perfectly. I had a couple million in the treasury. then i got hit with 2 disasters almost back to back. the city was only in year 4 I believe.

But thankfully since i was balanced, it wasn't hard to rebuild, and in fact, when big liz hit me, he took down my convention center which had started to slip in profits for events anyway and I was going to bulldoze it and replace with more industrial. So that was easy. but because the city was OK, I recovered quickly.. then got hit by the quake.... but i recovered mostly now.

I'm still VERY new. i've only got like 110 hours total on the game. but I'm starting to get the hang of it (thanks in part to people helping me here so thank you) and the more I get into it the more I want to do.

Even with the bugs I love this game. Just need a better vid card. and thank GOD I put a Corsair H80 cooler on my CPU, because my cores were getting moocho hot.
